If they were removed from their packets, is there any way of distinguishing the difference between a Strike Your Own D-Day 50p from a normal NIFC D-Day 50p?

No unfortunately, as they are both classed as BU coins. I think that any SYO's should have some form of privy mark on them to differentiate the difference.

There are recorded rotation errors in George 6 1/12 Anna coins (16 Anna’s to a rupee) so roughly an old farthing

@@janedaniel7288 There are a few old dates on the pre-decimal pennies that are slightly rotated. I have a 1902 penny like that. Coin Patrol informed me that they are fairly common along with other earlier dates.. Don't mix rotation errors up with alignments, as many Victorian pennies were minted with a coin alignment (similar to the US coinage), and not as medal alignment, as our coins are today.
