  • I've been really excited about exploring Genshin Impact music. There is a ton of super popular music in the Genshin OST, so I wanted to dig a bit deeper and find some tracks that not a lot of people are paying attention to. I found this one track from the Sumeru region called Across Dimming Asterisms. It's incredible how much there is to discover in every corner of the Genshin Impact soundtrack.

      100% my favorite track. I really love how they have dynamic music switching for combat (like Stories of Remote Antiquity flowing into Inevitable Conflict) in chasm, it just adds a whole new layer to the greatness. Very few content creators comment on it tho

    I wish more people listened to "No turning back", it's such a good soundtrack that is overlooked. And then there is "before the light fades" which plays only once after an 18-hour questline, which explains why that one is overlooked.

    also to answer why it may not always be featured in top genshin music, battle themes are amazing, but for many of us who have spent time building a strong team, we only hear the first 20-30s of the theme at most before killing the boss :) So we miss out, unfortunately, but I absolutely adored your breakdown and knowledge of various music styles. I fell in love with middle eastern music when I spent a year there as a young adult

    Oh my god. Ohmygod. Yes! YES!!! Sumeru (in my opinion) by far has the best, THE BEST, soundtrack in the entire game. All of Sumeru's battle themes, the rainforest and the desert tracks, are all amazing! You have to make a video(s) listening to ALL TRACKS of Sumeru's rainforest and desert battle themes.
    And thank you once again in educating us with Arabic maqam. Your surprisingly broad knowledge in cultural music is so welcome and it's why I love your channel so much. I'm ecstatic for you to listen to more genshin music, and explore the rabbit-hole hoyomix has created.

  • @Pascll
    @Pascll Před 9 měsíci +36

    agreed, it's a super underrated track. glad you covered it!
    I think the reason it's so underrated has to do with when it plays. a lot of the more popular tracks are boss themes and regular battle themes, you're almost guaranteed to hear those. for some players, they hear them on a semi regular basis.
    but this theme is only played in underground sections of the desert. the desert is a region a lot of people dislike, and the underground of this is only a portion of the area, not where you spend the most time if you're even in the desert.

  • @kasuha
    @kasuha Před 9 měsíci +8

    15:30 How is that not the most popular Genshin track? Because it has too tough competition within Genshin. The music is all so good that you eventually dumb out to it. There are other, just background tracks that play when you don't battle that are at least the same level good, just peaceful rather than full of tension.
    Also the sad reality of battle tracks is that people often don't have time to listen to them. First, they concentrate on the battle, and second, the battle is usually over in a few seconds so they don't even get the opportunity to listen to later parts.

    You have such a great ear! It's amazing that you were able to catch the erhu in the ost. Regarding its inclusion, the reason for this is most likely because Sumeru and Liyue (The nation inspired by China) border one another in-game. And I have to give it to you, we Arabs in middle eastern really rely alot on maqams to produce music pieces, using several traditional middle eastern instruments such as the oud العود that was sampled in this piece.
    Great job on interpreting it !

    first thing first, you geeking out for the musical stuff and theories is such a joy to watch,
    2nd thing first, OH MY GOD someone actually reacted to this!! bro whoever is the commenter who suggested this track is godsent, I thank you random commenter from half a year ago! Ive had this on my playlist since forever and it just hit so dmn hard on my first encounter (with ASSSSSIMOOOONGGGG).
    also the answer to your question on why its underrated is 13:05 (idk why people say its a underground theme when its clearly assimong theme who has waypoints ON THE SURFACE, thats literally my first intro to this theme), genshin has music for all layers of folk and the majority of people dont really have ears for complex tune, the popular ones are usually the more easily understood one. the flashy ones, port ormos for example. Those are good too but at the same time they can appeal to more people.
    5:05 I feel like they do that to more than just music... and not just for middle east too....

    Honestly almost all of the songs of the Sumeru OST are pretty good but one I feel doesn’t get enough love is “Village surrounded by green” the woodwinds just kill it! I really like your videos because you go a lot deeper than most music reaction CZcamsrs mainly with the emotions felt by the music (I love music that I can analyze and think about while listening almost as if it’s telling you something) and as a band member (secondary vocals and piano/organ) I dig that very much, Genshin OST is just incredible way of mixing cultural sounds with modern day sounds and because of that I feel the folks over at HOYO-MIX deserve a raise for their efforts. I’ve been following your Channel for a while now and I play a lot of the games you break down the music for, so Keep ‘em coming dude! I’ll gladly watch each one!

    At 12:11-ish onward for a bit, I don't think it's guitars. My mom was a wonderful concert violinist, and she often used the pizzicato method of playing songs similar to that part. I think maybe there was possibly a cello (or at least a synthesized one) or a violin (or synthesization). When pizzicato is used with either instrument, it can sound quite guitar-like, yet it retains the lighter sounds of those instruments, that guitars would not have in the first place. It COULD possibly be a guitar and a violin, but I'm hearing that cello relationship, rather than a guitar.
    On bowed string instruments (like both the violin and the cello, as well as a string bass, but that would definitely not be the case here), pizzicato is a method of playing by plucking the strings with the fingers, rather than using the bow. This produces a very different sound from bowing, short and percussive rather than sustained. This music seems to have a little of both, which isn't uncommon, either, when playing more mystical music.
    On the guitar, pizzicato is a muted form of plucking, which bears SOME resemblance to pizzicato on a bowed string instrument with its relatively shorter sustain. It's also known (especially in non-classical guitar) as palm muting. So...I suppose it could have actually been an attempt to make that sound, but I'm still thinking violin and cello.
    On the other hand, have you ever seen or heard one of these? The Nyckelharpa?
    czcams.com/video/7sfBcWvVUbs/video.html
    That's a BIG possibility. Going back to 12:11 then where this music starts with the very different sound, I'm thinking that the nyckelharpa could well have been the different instrument in use there.
    At any rate, it's lovely music, quite mystical, and I can definitely feel the battle--even with the definite synergy of whatever instruments are actually being used.
    I have to say, also, that I was raised in Alaska, and so I ALSO heard in this music a similarity to the music that is traditionally made by the Inuit, though generally speaking, their sounds are going to be lower in tone, and sometimes are produced by throat singing, which has an interesting "ring" to it when done correctly in the ancient style.
    All in all, this music is very beautiful, strong, and quite interesting. I like it very much. Thank you! 😀

    "And you guys tell me this is a regular battle theme??" Yeah dude 😂 Pretty much every Genshin battle theme is just an absolute banger. You should check out Swirls of the Stream (even more Middle-Eastern goodness), Gilded Runner (which uses the fibonacci sequence for its rhythm!), and Dual In The Mist (Japanese folk instruments played in an EDM style)

  • @SketchingPandaRen
    @SketchingPandaRen Před 9 měsíci +13

    I do like this song.
    The thing is, most of the time you don't hear a lot of the normal battle themes cause you often kill things pretty quick. And if it's not quick your usually trying to stay alive so you're not listening to the music. lol
    But also this is only in the ruins and dungeons of the desert, so it's not super common.

    • @UrLastSurprise
      @UrLastSurprise Před 9 měsíci +4

      No. In the official track credits, it’s listed as just an Erhu.

    • @elissahunt
      @elissahunt Před 9 měsíci +2

      @@UrLastSurpriseinteresting that they list an erhu in the credits because a rebab is a common middle eastern instrument that's very much like the erhu. This makes me wonder about where the track was recorded. Perhaps it was easier for them to find an erhu player than a rebab player.

    • @UrLastSurprise
      @UrLastSurprise Před 9 měsíci +2

      @@elissahunt All of the musicians in this track were Chinese except for the Ney player.

    • @elissahunt
      @elissahunt Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@UrLastSurprisewell that would explain the ease of finding an erhu player over a rebab player. 😁

    I think one of the reason these regular battle tracks are so underpopulated is because people are so strong that the battle ends quickly (in less than 1 minute for example), and they never reach the climax part of the track.

    Yu-Peng Chen has announced his resignation from Hoyo-Mix, and I hope he can make a breakthrough. Of course, there are also many of his previous works in my channel.
    I would appreciate it if you could analyze "Combat Benefit the Waves" or "Inevable Conflict", which are my favorite Chen's works on the list. No one has provided a professional analysis of these two pieces of music on the internet yet.
