    So good to have a linguistically fluent and competent review (not always a given on this channel!) Good, too, to have a good-natured , positive attitude to the car ,while fully aware of shortcomings. This I would value highly were I planning a purchase. So many motoring journalists just air their clichéd prejudices. So thank you, Brian. They should be giving you many more cars to review!

    Not bad at all. I like how compact the Fiat is. Fits a younger person nicely. Even a young Mom and Baby in the back. Love how it's designed.

    I have Fiat 500 and i'm 1.75 95kg so not a small person at all, and i fit in like charm , no issues at all my 2 kids in child seats go back with my wife so 4 of us daughter is 6 and son 3 years.
    Its a great second car to own, i can put full size stroller in the boot a lot of shopping etc.
    So what the heck you are talking about getting in to car and sitting so high up i have no idea.
    If you need prof i can take a picture just to show you ,
    It drives great, it serves it purpose more than great. My wife drives it to work daily. Low consumption durable rugged, and not the cheapest trim at all . Some minor issues with it with leaking radiator and expansion bottle, and that's it . And it was cheap to fix, and easy parts available etc.
    Idiots who still say Fiats are unreliable need their head checked. If you compare it to 70'-80's tech yes they were unreliable sort of but they were built to a price with cheap parts to repair and not much of headache. But other manufacturers were the same with same tech at the time , who said BMW or Audi was reliable ever? No one you were just told it was like that cause you paid 3x more money for 10 % more care ,maybe, built in to your car and it still breaks down , and it isn't cheap to repair.
    Comparing to all other offerings on market 500 is the best value for money.

    To be refreshed for 2019. I have a (USA) 2013 Abarth, which I love. However, I have run into a few "FIAT glitches" such as having to replace the intermediate steering column to cure a clunk ($400 US, just out of warranty), some rattles you don't have with, say, a Golf, and it has thrown a few codes that should not happen with better development. The advice I had was to take good advantage of the steep depreciation and find a lightly used, low-mileage used example - so I did that, and found mine with 21,000 miles for $10,000 US. For that, it's unbeatable fun.

      @NWPipeSmoker Před 6 lety

      Have fun with it! You'll probably throw a few codes - not a big deal, and you can erase them yourself with an OBD (on-board diagnostic) code-reader. I did develop a 'clunk' at low speeds in the steering column, a problem with 2012-15 models, and FIAT even have a kit - should be a recall or they quietly take care of it rather than charge me $400 to correct it with their kit, but that's just my opinion. A few rattles, but I do love the car!

    I'd like to add that as a Mercedes a class specialist I was reluctant to drive a Fiat 500 , but when I drove I was impressed.
    The 500c 85 BHP version I have is 92g/km co2 and it is zero road tax in the UK.
    I particularly like the sound of the engine because it goes well with the style. It is 2 cylinder btw.
    Also you need to be careful with door check straps as they tend to bounce back if you open the door quickly.

    This is a really good review of a car! Brian, you have made it really well, becouse you show what in a car really impartant is. Many reviewers make the mistake of judge the car based on more expensive, big and luxury cars; and that just shows what is they like on in a car and not what is the goods of the car. Brilliant! My opinion of the car is that is one of the smartest cars in the market right now: you have a very nice materials, design and good equipment for the money with the amount of spece you need to go and retorn of the office. For real: Do you know any city car that sounds better than a fiat 500 or abarth 595? So I like something that many times it is not taking on count: have fun! You enjoy a car and love it when it´s fun, economical and confortable ... so if you lives in a city.. why not to consider one of these?

      Your idea of a student having enough money to buy a new car and zip around central London is highly unrealistic. Monetarily, it's not that bad of a burden, although it is for many, but parking and tax are at least 10 times on top of that. There is just no point in it. For a bachelor/ette it makes a lot of sense.

      Its a fantastic practical TWO seater car, if you get the turbo model and you get an OBD2 retune. Removing the rear seats, installing a flat floor, and a lot of sound insulation (it otherwise gets very loud), cutting off the muffler (the turbo muffles plenty), and bumping boost on the turbo model from 12PSI to 20PSI has transformed it into an amazing car. The trunk then becomes massive, and with an anti-slip mat and tie-down straps I can fit just about anything back there and it accelerates very fast with the added boost (a bit quicker than a GTI if you launch right and keep RPM's in the narrow powerband above 3K-rpm and below 6K-rpm).

    Android auto wireless is on the way btw but I guess most radio's will not be compatible yet. If they will even update them once it is available I hope so. Also Android auto is not available in a lot of countries yet, so better check on how and what. Also be advised that using it will make your phone slow charge since it is connected as a sort of USB device and not as a charging port. Strange that all these manufacturers don't make a dedicated place to put your phone in. In my car I have to put it in the cup holder behind the gear selector.
    For the rest top review as always.

    Your colleague did a great job of filming. It appears that the model you were testing is indeed a TURBO model, hence the words Twin Air Turbo in the engine bay. Your Mirror model has the same style seats as my Fiat Sport model. We can raise and lower the entire seat from a jack lever on the LEFT (doorside) of the seat. If you slide the seat towards the rear, ingress egress is great. (sorry chunky-butt - maybe cut down on the Bacon Sarnies?) Here Stateside, it comes with a 1.4 liter I4 MultiAir 16-valve engine, 101hp, 98 ft lb. My vehicle came from the factory in Toluca, Mexico. We even have an electric version here in California. I understand that from this year, all US gasoline models will come equipped with Turbo engines. I did select the 6-speed automatic transmission made by AISIN, however, it is NOT very smooth shifting - my only complaint. The driver-side rear view mirror is split, with the outer 20% as wide-angle mirror, the look-rear blind spot sight lines are blocked by the roof B pillar. No injured bicyclists. ABSOLUTELY LOVE my CAR. Fun to Drive, easy easy for my elderly Mom to hop in and drive too. The Klaxon Horn sounds like a mosquito, but I have since changed that ! Plan to keep this car forever.

    Because it's a small car, we have to accept that some of the switchgear is in the wrong place. Where's the logic in this? Isn't the truth that Fiat Chrysler is running out of money, so is resorting to cosmetic changes on a 10 year old design (admittedly a pleasing design) to try to keep buyers happy? Small cars can have ergonomic controls nowadays, just as they can be quiet and refined: in the 1970s we all assumed only big cars could be quiet. It's called progress. Autogefuhl needs to sharpen its critical faculties a little, as I've noted of some of Thomas' reviews also.

    • @jessiemac7146
      @jessiemac7146 Před 6 lety +1

      Thomas's reviews are detailed, with little personal opinion, just interesting facts, good commentary and you can easily listen, or observe his excellent driving parts and make your own conclusions. Brian's reviews are more personal: 33:02 "...But it's a well made engine, and I'm sure it has plenty of pep, for years to come." Etc. Really? How does he know this? Did he build the engine!! I agree with you, the fun, modern i10 auto full-spec is £13.5k, and this 500 Mirror full spec auto is £16.7k.

    • @piglet5287
      @piglet5287 Před 6 lety +1

      Jessie Mac yes I wondered how Brian could know the engine is well-made too. A Fiat Stilo 1.6 I once ran had a problem with a sticking valve quite early. And can you really "feel" that a gearbox will be strong?

  • @BruceLeedar
    @BruceLeedar Před 6 lety +3

    24:46 You're glossing over the fact that the 500 failed the full-width Euro NCAP crash test--if you experience a similar severity crash (50 km/h into a solid wall) you are likely to be killed by head injuries, whereas in most modern superminis (B segment) you might walk away with minor injuries.
    Granted no city car has great safety, but a Kia Picanto, Toyota Aygo or Ford Ka+ score much better for driver safety. The Picanto is about the only city car remotely safe for rear passengers, although I would still be hesitant to carry anyone in the rear.

    Not much difference. Looks like it still has no spare. AND still likely has the expensive and difficult to replace rubber timing belt that is the death knell of this pretty little car in the USA. No one does it here as the cost isn't worth it considering the low resale value of the car. They then just consider the car disposable.

    Small cars do not "nip in and out of traffic". They have to stay in line like other cars. They are not motorcycles so cannot filter. I wish reviewers would stop using this ridiculous term for a slightly smaller than usual car. Just try to "nip in and out of traffic" and see what the reaction is from other drivers. Just because a car is small that doesn't entitle it to barge ahead of queues. Now please STOP making this ridiculous claim. Thank you.

    Innovate my ass. I have a 2013 Fiat 500 Turbo, and have been waiting for a real upgrade. This is now an 11 year old car, being a 2007 design that has gotten nothing but an extremely mild cosmetic makeover, and emphasis on the extreme. They could at least make the rear seats easily removable or that fold flat better without hitting the front seats, because the back are useless for anything but small children, and even then most car seats don't fit.
