I think it's only possible for men and women to be friends when one or both is gay and if they aren't close like the way girls are close with other girls. It has to be a friend of a girl friend, a childhood or family friend etc. Sibling like relationships between men and women aren't the very close and intimate type because siblings annoy each other.

I can truthfully say that im in a true platonic friendship with a girl and it works great. We grew up together and shes really cool but i could never imagine having more with her, because it would really weird me out after being friends for over ten years. Additionaly shes really not my type which also is a big influence. But i also acknowledge that dating culture and the dynamic between guys and girls in the us is really different, in my opinion more toxic. So i agree that in the us its really hard to have a pure platonic relation.

If two people are hot they cannot be friends. However I think if you’re friends with someone who is not your physical type than that’s different. Like I know I cannot be friends with a guy i find physically attractive but if he’s not my type i can definitely be friends with them. I also am an only child and I always wanted a brother so I have some male friends that are a bit older than me that have always been more the protection type and treat me like a sister and thats very different. I think also if you have a sister/brother family then they know how to have friends of opposite genders.

I've only been in one relationship and that relationship lasted almost a year.
while we were dating he had a girl who he had been friends with since they were 10. (we were 16 at this time). I wasn't bothered by it because i had grown up around her since we were practically babies. I did find out that he had had feelings for this girl previously after we started dating. I was fine with this, because I knew she had absolutely no feelings for him in that way, so nothing would ever actually happen between them. but then she was dealing with mental issues and kind of made him feel at fault for her attempt to end her life. I literally held him while he cried in my arms. I had never really gotten along well with this girl because our vibes just didn't match, but I began to resent her a tiny bit after this incident. I understood she had extreme mental issues, but I didn't like how she made him feel. I told him that he deserved to have better friends, but realized that no one else was being a friend to her, so she needed him. because we were dating, this did make him more absent in her life.
after we had been dating 6 months or longer, I began to be bothered with their friendship. it just felt like every time our plans fell through because of my parents, then he would go hangout with this girl. this was almost always just the two of them going on walks, hanging at her house, or his house. I did trust that they weren't doing anything because she has absolute 0 feelings for him in that way and likes his brother. but the fact he had liked her previously began to bother me.
a couple months before we broke up, one of his guy friends who was kinda fruity and was friends with this girl, told my ex that he though I was controlling. well I thought this was crazy because I had never not allowed him to go somewhere? I never made him feel bad about hanging with others and never told him he couldn't do something. apparently it was because I was clingy whenever at church, but I never pulled him away from his friends. I was pretty sure that the girl my ex was friends with had made this other friend think that way. my ex resolved that issue with this friend almost right away.
a couple days before we broke up, my ex was upset because that girl he was friends with admitted she didn't like me. I think in a way I was taking her friend away from her. this friend was pretty troubled and was almost always negative. so ofc this dude would prefer to hangout with me, his gf. he was mad at the girl, but talked it through. well boom surprise, a couple days later, we broke up. he said it was so he could put more time into his friends and family (he also was planning on going on a mission for the church we go to). I bet a lot of it had to do with him realizing he hadn't been there for the girl he was friends with and that she needed him to be. I think us breaking up was the right thing, but looking back I was way more okay with the whole situation than most girls would be.

I had some girls I was friends with in high school but we never hung out outside of school because it wasn’t that deep. I had one girl who I wasn’t attracted to in any way that was a good friend but we barely talked after graduation.
I do believe men/women can have platonic friendships as I have 2 like this. But they only work if they’ve grown up with or known each other for years, you have a brother/sister type relationship, or you’re just not each other’s type/aren’t attracted to each other. It can also work if you know too much about each other to the point that thinking about dating them gives you the ick. Apart from those reasons, I can’t see how it could work…

Hear me out, I've been thinking about this theory a lot. I can't speak to a guy's side, but from a girl's perspective, I feel like between pretty much all (straight) girls and guys there is at least some type of attraction, but it's like a percentage. So for example, if I meet a guy and think he is 20% attractive, I can either decide that he's a friend or more than a friend (based on other factors); if he's just a friend then I'm able to stop the attraction at 20% and it may even go down from there because I think of him that way, or if I start thinking about him as more than a friend, then the attraction rating will go up. Maybe this is just me, but that's what I think.
But I think this works more for being friends in a group, not one on one.
I feel like most opposite gender friendships can be platonic as long as the girl wants it to be

I will say as a female I agree strongly with a lot of these things said. I will also say for me being a younger girl in Highschool and Personally not being able to make girl friends because of past stuff. I think it’s very possible for men and women to be friends platonically, but not in every situation. I'm friends with a girl who I became friends with in pre-school. We lost contact around 2nd or 3rd grade, but re-connected way later in my junior year of high school. She has a boyfriend and I am not attracted to her at all. I have no idea if she has ever felt any attraction towards me. I would assume not, because she's a loyal person and she is in a relationship with somebody. So I would say, in this case, I actually do have a fully platonic relationship with a girl.
