This is why the bus is so slow, it's NOT the driver's fault!

- With the rise of cases involving irate public bus commuters venting their frustrations on bus captains for driving too slowly, I feel that it is time to shed some light on the most likely reason your bus is crawling at a snail's pace, and no, it's not the bus captain's fault.

I travel to school on the same bus everyday and I've seen like 5 times in last 2 years of commuters being angry at bus captains for being super slow. The only times bus drives fast is during peak hour because many passengers and their time is well scheduled
edit: I feel like this video should be shown on tv or something just to let people know since I realized most of the time it's boomers who complain this situation
Basically right when the bus captain is too early and I’m the only one on the bus, I actually would encourage the bus captain to drive a little slower. The reason is that I understand the bus captain and I know that if he or she is too early maybe he or she may kena by the OCC. But also, if he or she is late, then the BC Chiong, it is okay for me. If BC late I won’t say anything, because I cannot do anything about the BC being late, but if BC early, I will be fine with the BC driving slow. Once, my 16M bunched with the 16 infront and I asked the BC to drive slower, since I was not in a rush. And he did.

Oh now i know why. As a foreign student living in Singapore, i usually face these circumstances. There was one time i was on a bus traveling on a highway. The traffic was light yet the driver drove pretty slowly. Now i know the reason. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
1:00 wah so many destos & bus models!!
That video was absolutely brilliant in the way you explained it. It happens everywhere I guess. I love the title of the drivers "bus captain". Truly professional.
Thank you for the kind words! The term bus captain was coined by a minister in Singapore if I remember correctly, although in reality the general public still refers to them as bus drivers and the more professional sounding bus captain title is usually only seen in official press releases
@@glitchFan2428 The problem is the general public have no respect for us and they prove it time and time again and think that all we are is their ride home. Bus driver is the all too typical term but "operator" as used in the US and "captain" in your neck of the woods is far more purposeful, but hey you guys should be proud since the buses out there are the best in the world.

Buses don't even leave the interchanges on time based on the schedules. What else to expect
As much as I understand this, I still don't get it why do bus captain open the doors when no one is boarding and also sometimes the bus captain would slow the buses to the point that the previous same bus is already behind them. Like seriously wtf man I could've waited for the other bus if I'm going to end up the same time as the other one.
I’ve wondered about this before, thanks for explaining in this nice video. 👍🏼
Thank q for this info 😍🤩👍👌hope every body know why we bus captain drive slow and stop at the bus stop for a few minute , sorry and thank q for ur understanding.

Hi, I'm a Malaysian who studied in SG for 14years. SG is like a second home. but because of my family business, I have to come back to Malaysia. I have a hometown friend who's now currently in SG, who is driving a bus with the SBS. He told me that he had to wake up at 3.30pm just to get ready to get to work. To me, it's really a tiring job and everyday new challenges. We should really appreciate other careers rather than what we are doing, especially those who are in the public transportation industry. They not only work to put food on the table but with the responsibility to bring everyone to where they want to go safely. Thank you to all the public transport captains. And lastly, I love trains! MRT!

I get it that if is not the bus drivers' fault. But why there was once I took a bus that drove very slow, then during my journey, 4 or 5 of the same bus service overtake us. Just asking, the bus captains should be able to switch duty shifts right? Then why would this happen? (Just wondering, not frustrated in any way)
Isit bus 72 cos that happens often during peak hours. The BC cannot choose the shift, it's assigned to them.
@@glitchFan2428 No it is feeder service(I forgot which one)
Maybe the OCC swapped your bus's timetable with that of another bus of the same service but scheduled for a later time in the day? Was thinking if that's possible if the other bus is really getting way ahead of it's original timetable's schedule
2:03 😂
L😆L
Main problem is the frequency
now in 2023 buses still bunch and irregular intervarls are still common even if the bus is moving really slowly
In the Australian city of Perth, we have what is known as timed stops where buses may need to stop for a certain period of time during the route if they arrived at that stop too early. The driver can see what stop and the stop after will be bus be at on the Electronic Ticketing Information Machine similar to the one at 0:46 but has the capability to print out paper tickets or top-up SmartRider which is the smart card we use.
Tower Transit does that in Singapore too on bus routes operated by it
Riding a bus is very fun...I really liked it 😊👏👏👏
Happened before. Buses would stop at random bus stops, even when empty. Though there was this one smart sbs bus captain where he had skipped a bus stop because the same service was there, and nobody in my bus had stopped it, so we swooped off.
Why did you say 90% and not 100%?
I am curious 🤔
(0:28)
The other 10% of cases could be (but not limited to) some bc purposely late to "keng" a trip or two, or some bc they just naturally drive very very slow sometimes despite warning from the company
Oh, thanks for the explanation!
@glitchfan2428
I know one BC friend 👨🦱 who once knows his back bus BC👨💼 (BC of the bus that is behind the one he's driving) is going to do one more trip after arriving interchange while he 👨🦱 (bc friend) gets to go back to depot after arriving at interchange so he purposely late by few minutes so that the back bus BC 👨💼 don't need to fetch so much passengers and make sure he 👨💼 can arrive interchange with proper breaks because 👨🦱 he's nice and they friend friend👨🦱👨💼 mah. Also last trip for him 👨🦱 doesn't really matter since break time is not applicable for off service buses at interchange
In a bus my mom said the bus is slow
They have a schedule to follow! I took the last bus and he was driving super slowly. I joked with my friend that the bus uncle wants to clock OT hours
Reminds me of the bus bunching I experienced previously in Penang. 2 buses, same route, 0 minute gap in between, 1 full, 1 empty.

Given this, shouldn't the buses be deployed closer together (i.e. max 10 min interval fr. interhange instead of current 15) so we don't end up with insane 20+ minute wait times if the buses get slowed for whatever reason?
Well done, good explanation, easy to understand, also very nice buses in Singapore.
Thank you!
1:24 in Berlin sometimes there are 3 or 4 buses right behind each other because here its regulated by timetable and if a busdriver is top late, he still goes for his break at the bus stand

Last Tuesday, When I took Express Service 506 from Bukit Batok to Toa Payoh before heading to the MRT for my interview, the Euro 6 MAN A22 bus wasn't as slow as of now because along the expressway it runs at a decent speed.
I rarely encounter bus captains that drive slowly, most go at high speed even if the bus is nearly empty
Depends on which operator you are riding, you may have a different experience
@@mingyoushaaa5815 which operator applies this method?
Amazing info
It all boils down to inconsistencies. If they're as consistent and on time like MRTs, lesser people would complain. It's the painful slow-moving buses, coupled with buses that are way too earlier than their scheduled timings, as well as the OFTEN doubling or tripling of the same buses arriving at the SAME time that really pisses people off. And if the planners can ONLY blame traffic situations, they are TERRIBLE planners in the first place! So, yes, I do agree that the drivers are not really the ones at fault here. IT'S THE PLANNERS who are BEHIND it all. Blame them... and more importantly, they ought to face severe consequences or nothing will improve.
Bus drivers in the UK literally have a one second space mean that they can go near to the same bus Which is doing that same service 😂😂😂
I TRAVELED ON BUS 76 SG5176G ONLY GOING FOR ABOUT 25 KM PER HOUR FROM YCK TO EUNOS INT
On route 51 a bus will quite often be immediately behind another, they don’t seem to slow down and allow the gap to grow. Often they can be at the same stop at the same time.
Good explaing.
In london this also happens some drivers have to wait at a bus stop is normally see this on the route 476
Bus timings are the most inaccurate at the interchange or first couple of stops. The bus apps' can never predict the bus departure or arrival times at these locations. Perhaps Lta should manage that too. Wonder what traffic condition is holding the buses up at the interchanges.
Exactly, when them buses are on time, more often than not I can hear the dashboards alerting that the driver's overspeeding. (tbh 60KM/H is abit too slow, especially on expressways)
When they're too early, those sit-behind-the-desk guys force them to go slow.
IIC the B9TL's trip computer will flash an 'overspeed' alert whenever the bus's speed exceeds 50km/h
In Hong Kong, many bus drivers deliberately drive very slow😂
And even slow down obviously in front of a green light to hope it turns yellow so that they can stop the bus😅
They just want to get overclock bonuses
Ahhh I can understand why
So what your trying to say is they move slow because of the amount of accidents it has
No, the bus company simply wants to have people who want to take a bus to have a better experience in the sense that they arrive in a more steady fashion instead of (later down the route) 2 or 3 buses at the same stop, while the 2 behind might be (officially) scheduled to arrive 10 and 20 minutes later than the very first one at the same stop.
From what I can tell (we basically have the same system in The Netherlands though our bus transportation company we have now (EBS) doesn't adhere to it this strict like Arriva used to do) it is done so that buses on the same route with the same destination who used to skip stops when there were no passengers wanting to get on or off the bus will not be superearly near the busstops more at the end of the route, causing people who expect a bus at, let's say 11:20 to miss it because in the 10 minute time window that they expected to be on time waiting for it, the bus had already departed.
Funny enough, I've had these kind of experiences a couple of times with EBS as well (though people thankfully do not swear at the driver) and timed fast driving drivers (not unsafe fast, but just with more speed) and the really relaxed driving ones, and I turned up on my destination at the exact same time.
It's mostly a matter of perception: not having to brake or come to a complete standstill at some junctions but due to the low speed being able to drive up to them and the driver having enough time to watch for oncoming traffic and then being able to drive through without stopping buys the same amount of time when the driver is driving fast.
(By the way, some of the traffic lights that have a preference module for giving public transportation vehicles a green light upon nearing them will also refuse the green light when the bus is way to early and slow it down that way.)
All this time in my mind i blame the bus captain for driving so slow
Thank you. Very informational video.
You're welcome
Okay now I understand much better thanks for the info 👍

Hi @glitchFan2428 I like your videos and I liked it :) also I love your bus videos, they are very old for me haha thanks man :)
The distance between bus could be shorter if more buses are employed at one go for the same route. This will minimise the uniform time for bus travel . So it's the system at fault when you do not employ enough bus on the route . SG in the nut shell are always good looking on paper but rather rubbish in practice.
The distances between the buses cannot be too short. This is because buses tend to bunch together. Rather than minimising the uniform time, having too many buses only results in traffic jams and like 5 buses coming at the same time after a 10 minute of nothingness. So yes, while your suggestion is "good looking on paper", it is "rather rubbish in practice".
huh but last time my bus station afew times got three 159 in a row leh
Reminds me of sbahn everyday 6.00am, damn slow while only 2 station to reach city. It even stop for 5min.. hoping the new hauptbahnhof reduce the traffic. But still that samn sbahn slow
I’ve heard from BC that LTA deduct about $100 for not complying even when they earn so little. The Habitats so long, got more friction between the ground and the wheels which caused it to be later and LTA also don’t want do anything like five more time? Anyways Great Video :)
Nice
I ask you. I wait for bus 15mins and the bus drive slowly and stop at every bus stop to waste time. So total I wasted 45mins in bus journey just to get from a short distance. Does those bus operator feel they are doing a good job? No shame ah? If not for the gov we rather buy our own car better. Who WAnna take your lousy bus
Omg yes, I take the 162 first bus in the morning, SG1082U, and it stops at the bus stop for 3 minutes sometimes even when there’s no passenger and the bus travels at 10km/h
First and last bus must strictly follow the timing. If the bus is early for more than 1min or later than 5mins of the schedule time, the bus operator will be fined.
Let me introduce Hong Kong’s New world first bus, driven by F1 drivers
I really wish to go back and take 15 again. Roaring all the way up the peak 👍🏻
But hor i saw when their bus time meter show they are ahead 5 mins and they are still speeding or its shows they are already late 5 mins but they are still very slow... why?
The main problem is why must wait 15min for one bus??? 15mins is very long leh. Then they put the blame on customer and driver. Those operator have to wake up
15 minutes in not that long. If you go to other countries, the waiting time is even longer.
I will just walk to the MRT Station instead
LOL when I was on service 16M on mercerdes benz bus the bus stopped at a bus stop at niccol highway on a bus stop near orchard the no one boarded or alighted and just stopped there

Then how about those who need to attend to urgent matter or working? Left home timed nicely but the driver drive slowly and it will result in coming late.
So you rather the driver defy his superior's orders, drive fast and lose his bonus and eventually his job just so you can attend to your matters?

Why don't they use a hyper drive.
Yesterday, I had to wait for about 20 minutes for bus service 66 to stop at Jurong East Bus Interchange when I am about to go home from my school. Whenever the bus cannot come on time, it had made me feel so annoyed that I threw a few meltdowns next to a lady with a male child! I then realised that I didn't want to cause trouble to the others waiting in line for bus service 66. Later the moment bus 66 finally arrived, It was a slight relieved for me to board the bus, I even had to complain to the bus captain about why it took so long to arrive at the bus interchange-
Hmm this kind of delays do happen from time to time ah
We really need this video to be seen by everyone 👍
2:05 typical SEA mentality. Bad complain. Good also complain. Duh
20years ago people are grateful that the bus come
Now people are complaining that the bus late 1min
Do drivers ever go speeding when they are late?
Yes, max 60km/h
They do, but from what I've seen it's not actually encouraged by the control centre to speed up too much.
Some bus didnt follow the route. Bus got late after the wrong loop and skipped my stop so faaast after skipping my stop then until Khatib Station, Bus missed 11 stops and then turns back and turns into Yiahun
There was this particular journey I took in a Mercedes oh series bus late night around 10pm back in 2007. The service was 61 and I took it from Queenstown to bukitbatok East Ave 6. At the beginning the bus was moving normally however one by one passengers aligted at their bus stops. Then the bus entered the empty Holland road, ulu pandan road with just me another passenger and the driver. This particular driver had another bus in front stuck at a traffic light. He pulled up along it on the middle Lane which is rare in Singapore. I knew he was planning to overtake the other bus upon green light but that wasn't just it,he absolutely floored the bus easily getting to 90+kmph! There was something wrong with the speed governor in this bus as we were overtaking every other car even those in the right lane. In fact the late night meant no one flagged down the bus till bukit timah road! However after bukit timah till my bus stop at bukitbatok East Ave 6 he moved slowly maybe because there was another 61 bus in front and guess what he stopped at my stop for a considerate amount of time after I got down. Also I was the last passenger on board. This was the fastest I have been on a Singapore public bus and yaa back then at least some buses didn't have speed governors! 😊
In Omsi 2, I actually did a speed test on a Citaro and it was quick
The bus captain told me that he will have a pay cut

But overtaking the previous departure in the same route is possibly occurs in Hong Kong, does it happen in Singapore? 🥵
Yes it does sometimes, but I believe that unless the buses are scheduled close to each other, the control center would try and stop this from happening
my bus flapped open the wings (bus doors) i thought the bus door spoil so i waited
