    1:14 The purpose of food
    Do you think about food too much? In this video, we’re going to talk about why you’re always thinking about food, and what actually causes food cravings.
    There are two types of people:
    • People who eat for health
    • People who eat for pleasure
    If you have food cravings, it’s almost impossible to eat for health. Once you get rid of cravings (yes, it’s possible), it allows you to better control what you eat.
    The purpose of food is to give you nourishment. Food can still be pleasurable. But, once you start letting food control you, that’s when it gets out of hand.

    Constantly thinking of food can be part of depression symptoms. Depressed people feel that they have very little to look forward to in life, so one of the pleasures they can get is having a nice meal, hence they think about that meal until they get it. Sometimes the thoughts get too much for them and so they eat between meals and so get fatter and more depressed. Not sure what the answer is to this?

      Thank you Bob, I can confirm this from my own experience. Depression DOES lead me to rewarding myself for a hard day of work or even just a "successful" day, meaning I just have done something, with eating carbs. Feeling low, carbs. Missing human attention, replace it with carbs. It is really difficult to get out of this cycle, but so important! This rewarding system with food is part of our western(?) culture and it's so wrong. If somebody has trouble dealing with carbs abstinence: Keep on believing in yourself, you can do it and you will feel much more happy! 💓

    Great simple and logical info Dr. Berg. One of the reasons I think is because there's so many addictive ingredients like msg, aspartame, sugar, processed sodium, etc (excitotoxins) that stimulate the brain and senses. This causes many people to have trouble distinguishing between eating for health and nourishment or just eating to satisfy cravings. It's also a social thing where people feel peer pressured to eat out with their friends. Love your channel by the way. Keep up the good work. 👍😆

    Hi Dr. Berg,
    This was a very interesting video - as are ALL of your videos ~ you are awesome!! My issue is different than food cravings etc...and I wonder if you have any information to share with me or perhaps you have done a video that somewhat covers the issue that you can point me to. My issue is food aversion. It's a BIG problem for me and lately, it's brought me to tears. I have read that it could be caused by hormones but I wanted your professional knowledge on the problem and how to treat it. Any information you can share with me would be greatly appreciated.

    I don't think healthy food must taste bad. Junk food is the easy way to feed ourselves. I eat a lots of cabbage, making home made coleslaw. Meat with lots of onion. Fish with lots of lemon. Lots of salad, and fruit.

    Hello Dr. Berg yes I am one of those people I love cooking I love to bake and I am afraid to let that sensation of pleasure go . I am not overweight just have little fat in my midsection it is so hard for me to let go of that desire. Why does a person have to give up sugar or goodies altogether?

    • @jaeshasway
      @jaeshasway Před 7 lety

      You have to find a balance. You sort of answered your own question. You said you're not overweight but carry excess weight in your midsection. That's probably the worst place as carrying weight in the stomach can lead to a multitude of serious health issues if we don't address it. I think if you could refashion some of your favorite sweet treats or savory meals subbing in low carb ingredients. I saw a video today with low carb cinnamon rolls. There are tons of delicious low carb dishes out there. Look at it as a new cooking adventure. If you don't have blood sugar issues, you could probably get away with subbing some healthier sweeteners and not necessarily ditching them altogether in favor of sugar substitutes like Xylitol, Stevia, etc. when you bake, also using coconut, or almond flour, etc. instead of regular flour. Good luck to you. Awareness is the first step, gaining knowledge, then making change. You are on your way!😃

    Intermittent fasting is making a big difference for me. No point thinking about lunch when I'm not having any. Then dinner I want real food not fast food; then it got easy to not go there and not want it. It's been a gradual change over the past two months.

    What kind of salad dressing do you use?

    • @jaeshasway
      @jaeshasway Před 7 lety

      I use flavor infused olive oil and flavor infused balsamic vinegar. My favorite combo is the lemon olive oil and lemon infused white balsamic vinegar. There is also a coconut balsamic and a Tuscan herb Olive oil that I love, so I mix and match. I have several flavor of vinegar and olive oil. There are zero carbs in the olive oil form1 tbsp and 2 carbs in the table spoon of vinegar. I eat a salad with every meal, and rarely go over in my carbs unless it's a planned carb refeed, so don't let the 2 carbs scare you. These are great tasty alternatives.

    dr. Berg, I'm following your advice but 2 days ago I ate a huge amount of sugar (without even wanting and that's strange) and 2 days now I'm struggling to keep myself off sugar that I crave so much (after 2 months of being...cool!). I'm able to hold on cause I ate good things and I'm not hungry and that's what counts most for me with lchf diet you suggest.

      1) Lettuce goes well with red pepper and onion (salt, acv, olive oil). 2) try lettuce, less spinach and even less arugula with a dressing of 3 tbsp of olive oil, 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp of musturd and half a tsp of honey (you mix them before pouring on salad) and at the top some parmesan. 3) If you like garlic.... just lettuce, garlic in small pieces, salt, acv or balsamic vinegar and olive oil and it's so yummi! These are my 3 favourite salads.

    Interesting... When I was diabetic and before, I ate for total pleasure. However, since I learned about my Diabetes, I made some serious changes in my menu and the foods I ate... I have gradually learned to find foods that I love that are really nutritious... For instance, Egg dishes like Quiche Lorraine, I make without a pie crust... I grease my pie pan with bacon drippings and carry on as if I was making Quiche, with a crust... Another of my favorites is Miso Soup... High in all sorts of minerals and vitamins, including Iodine... It boils down to this... A person can fill the desires of the taste buds, while eating nutritious foods, minus the carbs and sugars...
    A big problem, I had to overcome was the teachings of my Mother and Grandmother... ""You're not leaving the table, until you clean up your plate". There's a hundred more, but you get my drift... That education led to my Diabetes... I had to change my eating habits along with my eating education... Great video, but it could have gone further... :-)

    I think about food too much but not for the same reason. I love the food I can't have and hate the food I can :-( Since I am trying to be healthy(have been gf for 5 years, and eating mostly keto/clean type foods) and don't eat foods that taste good to me anymore (as general rule), food just stresses me out. I miss the days that I just ate what sounded good. I was a big foodie (not junk food/fast food). I used to look forward to eating; now I just dread meal time. I have to plan everything out to make sure I have the right foods on hand and have to spend time preparing food that I am not going to like anyway :-( It has gotten to the point that my doctor told me my issue is that I don't eat enough. Sigh...with AI, this is now my life....forcing myself to eat stuff that I don't like...I guess it could be worse....

      I do like cheese....about the only thing like anymore...but try to limit it so I will still enjoy something now and then. I used to love steak and asparagus but after eating that meal after meal, it is getting a little old too..
      I was just doing a high quality protein shake twice a day to limit the need to spend so much time in the kitchen, but my doctor is telling me I need to eat whole foods....ugghhh...
      On top of it, my doctor tells me I need to eliminate stress, lol...I told her the only real stress in my life is having to spend too much time in the kitchen preparing foods I don't like...Oy..lol...All I can do is laugh anymore I guess...

      Maybe try less protein. Protein has the same effect on your blood sugar level as carbs.
      Try to reduce the quantity of insulin in your blood by eating foods with a low insulin index (II).
