THE NIGHTMARE JOB!!!! ROTATOR V.S. MATERIAL HANDLER!!!@

  • Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching!! I hope my viewers are enjoying the new 4K videos!!! Today is just one of those days.... Some jobs just want to fight you every step of the way. In this video, we definitely had a fighter.... A material handler truck was at a new construction site after some heavy rains when it became bottomed-out and buried in soft mud and clay. What at first looked like a simple job for our Peterbilt 389, Miller Industries, Century 1150R rotator, turned into a nightmare. We couldn't get off the road to get into the truck without risking sinking ourselves and we outweighed him by a lot. We are on a two lane road with no shoulder, around a blind curve on one side, and a blind hill on the other, so we try to keep traffic flowing. With no shoulder and soft ground beside the road, we have very little stability to build a decent platform for the rotator to be able to lift and winch off the side. Has the Rotator met its match on this job or will "closure be the ONLY option"??? Watch as Ethan, Gavon, and I battle this behemoth in a giant game of tug-of-war. I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

I thought you might like to know: I do watch all of your videos as soon as they post completely to the end no matter how long they are. But sometimes I have to record the time-stamp location in notepad and resume later in the day or after sleep on long ones. But your longer videos do get watched completely. I just wanted to say: Thank you for sharing this with us and taking the time involved in the (I'm sure lengthy) upload process and all the long editing for this.

To those that might have wondered, the grooves in a tire are called sipes. This process was the result of a man finding the leather or hard rubber on his shoes too slippery at the slaughterhouse he was employed at back in the 1920's. He made grooves in the soles to improve the traction, and the process was named for the developer, John Sipe, who went on to procure a patent on this.

Incorrect Farm_fab...the groves are not called sipes. Sipes are the tiny lines which are most easily visable on winter tires which strictly improve traction on wet or icy hard surfaces...they do nothing at all in mud. What gets traction in mud is the actual tread pattern and the only thing that would have helped here is an off road or a combination tread pattern.

I drove these drywall trucks for years! If they had put there outriggers down and turned the air pressure up in the tag axle they could have raised the whole truck up and stacked stuff under the front tires and the back axles! It would’ve probably came out on it’s own or at least not have been such a hard pull for Ron! I’ve literally got myself unstuck probably 20-30 times over the yrs! But I was the best that ever got a truck stuck when I first started driving! Lol

Actually the pink hard hat is normally used to indicate a new worker who’s in training or similar but he liked it so is keeping it even though he now could have the standard yellow one. I don’t believe there’s ever been any connection with pink for that cause with hard hats as worn by males.
There’s different colors for different types/professions of workers so they can be identified on job site.

Ron, great recovery. Thank you for taking us along.
I know I've mentioned this on a few vids before, but it really concerned me to see Gavin standing where he was when you connected the line to the front and started to spin the truck around toward the road. From my watching perspective he was 1/2 way between the 2 trucks and within about 15 ft of the line. If that cable had let loose unexpectedly....
I shudder to think what could have happened.
I know you know about these things and I'm sincerely not trying to tell you how to do your job, but I've seen the injuries and fatalities that can happen when wire cables let loose. I hope you'll go back and look at that part of the video. If I'm wrong, please let me know.
There's alot going on at most scenes and I know you can't be everywhere watching everything, but Gavin is a young man, gaining experience, and with a long life ahead of him hopefully.
    Best wishes!

Got one for you, Ron. I spent 10 years driving those same type of trucks. Had a driver try to cross a muddy rain soaked farmer's field in order to get to the backside of some new apartments in Lafayette Indiana. He buried the loaded truck to the frame. Got a second truck, empty, to pull the first one out. Buried that one to frame also. This was on Monday. Several companies came and tried ,or flat out refused to try, to recover both trucks. On Friday, the farmer was threatening to press charges for trespassing and damages along with putting a lien on the vehicles. Finally one company managed to get them out on mid-friday. One truck was roughly 500ft from the road and the other was closer to 700-800ft. Cost the company nearly $7000 in tow fees, fines from the city for mud in the road, and the company owner gave the farmer a thousand in cash if he didn't press charges. Plus, the load of drywall was completely destroyed. Yeah, they fired the driver and helper.
Love you videos. You're a true professional.

We were called out on the same exact type of material handler here in Florida, he was fully loaded with double-stacked pallets of roofing shingles, and 25% of the load was dropped at that job site and the rest was for another job, but he backed down into some sand and unloaded what went there and he started spinning and sinking when he tried to leave. And instead of using his brain and stopping as soon as he started sinking down, he just kept trying until it was framed out from front to back. Gotta love non-drivers that do that. Long story short, our 75-ton rotator couldn't budge him. he was off the road about 200ft, I hooked to him, and I put all the pressure I felt safe putting on it, A LOT of pressure and it did not budge at all, so I was done. lol. I told them they needed to get a machine out there to unload it, and they needed to start digging it out and call me back when they have all the sand dug out from around and under it and a few feet in front of it so that we could put boards down and make a ramp to pull it up. And he was like, You don't dig them out? I was like, NOPE! lol. I was just 10 minutes down the road but I never heard from them again so I have no clue how they got out. I know it took A LOT of digging, like two days worth for two guys going 24/7 with shovels. lol. I did tell the driver that any time he starts to spin and sink, to just stop right then and call someone to come help him out.

    Ron ,
I enjoy watching your videos. You know your business very well.
A couple of comments. First, you should consider fitting your truck with a self- tailing winch such as those made by Harken or Lewmar. These winches are often known as capstans or gypsy heads. With a snatch block and 200' of 3/8" diameter braided synthetic line such as Samson Spectra much of the muscle work in the pulling the tow wires to the truck. Tie one end of the line to your white or blue hook, run the other to the truck, through the snatch block and back to the rotator. Now, use the winch to pull your wires to the truck. This how salvage tugs move a 3" diameter wire core towing wires to stricken vessels. This also how mooring lines are passed from a ship to the pier.
Early in your video appear to cross your tow line while it is under load. This is a very bad practice. You even call it out later in the video.
    Good luck!
    Bob

A nice recovery from a very sticky situation. Would rate that as a technical recovery with the rear right digging in. Kudos to Ethan and Gavin, as they are learning the trade well. Liked that Gavin thought about getting the headsets when I was thinking, "where were they?" 👍
    Some suggestions:
Suggest to Gavin that he does not obstruct the view of the person operating the remote. That would help to give them a clear view at all times.
Could some of the material from the drive have been placed under the drives to help give them a bit better grip? That would also have helped ease the lifting of that back cornet. Could some cribbing have been used under the drives to help lift the rear end earlier?
Another thought that occurred would have been to move the truck forward and get the tag axle dropped before any pulling was done. It might have helped lift the rear end before it got buried.
Okay, so I'm an armchair towie. Transport is not my trade at all. There might be reasons why my suggestions were not appropriate.

It would be interesting for those that have never been involved in really muddy and dirty recoveries, to see how much work is involved in cleaning ALL the equipment after such a job.
Thank you for another interesting video. 🇺🇸🇬🇧

many years ago, back in the 80's, I was stuck in a truck stop that had a dirt parking lot in Tulsa, OK., with a flatbed loaded with 45,000 lbs. of steel coils. We had a wild night of tornadoes & thunderstorms with lots of rain. Once the rain started, I tried to move to solid ground, but got stuck behind other trucks that were packing in off the highway because of the weather. I ended up buried in mud & storm run off in the back of the truck stop with about 30 other trucks. Nothing we could do until morning as I was blocked in. One by one trucks were getting winched out by the heavy wrecker service that showed up. Each driver had to hook his own truck up because the tow operator did not want to get muddy. He wasn't having no part of it. The first time ever at about 29 years old I had to drag a winch line. Oh my God. I still remember that pain today.

    Nice.
I wonder if it might have helped on the first attempt if they had pulled in and rotated the boom over the cab. Reducing pressure on the rear. Using their boom as a counterweight.

    • @glennjukes5581
      @glennjukes5581 Před rokem +3

Don't think so--the left front wheel was alway down in the ground. Rotating that boom while trying to move that truck creates a very/very unstable truck, in muddy unstable ground. Boom should always be in the back cradle nd latched if possible.

What might have helped is pulling 45 degrees up with the help of a truck rim siting on a 4x4 and rolling with it or a similar contraption ,pulling straight needs 3x pulling force as facing dirt needs be displaced while moving in pulling direction .

I've seen these drywall trucks do this same thing time after time. They have the reach but insist on getting as close as possible. Never should have been that close to the retaining wall, just asking for trouble. Nice job getting him out.
