      I just usually put them next to a icon that I have of the resurrection. And then put them on my crucifix for the remainder of the year. I read somewhere long ago that we are supposed to bring them back to church before ash Wednesday to be burned. And the ashes is what is put on our forehead for ash Wednesday. Is this true?

    I get putting a piece of palm under your bed. Demons hate things that are holy. With a blessed palm, it can keep them away from influencing your dreams when you sleep. I have my miraculous medal inside my pillow and I sprinkle holy water on my bed and my room at night. For me it's like declaring "This is God's property." Coming from a country with a significant pressence of the occult, we have sacramentals scattered around our house and property. May you all have a meaningful Holy Week.

    Cradle born catholic-christian here. Its a tradition in my family since we were kids, at Palm Sunday we each got a blessed palm. After Mass, dad would form a lovely cross out of each palm & we'd hang it in the rooms of our home. Each year, growing up, the parish priest pre-Lent would announce for us to bring our dried blessed palms which they'd burn to get ashes for upcoming Ash Wednesday. Dad taught each of us how to make this cross. So now we continue it. Yesterday 24Mar.2024, I made crosses of my blessed palms after Mass, proudly brought them home to hang on my wall.✝️🙏🌹

    In the Philippines, our palms are cut and woven into various designs with ribbons and paper flowers, etc., and the more extravagant the design the more expensive it is. (We buy it before it is blessed and it only costs P25-50 which is less than a dollar American.) It is then used as a religious decoration in the home. It can be tied to a window, door or hung somewhere in the house, indoor or outdoor. Some people like to buy several to put everywhere in their houses or to give away to relatives who are unable to go to mass.

    Our church always give palms as the cross. Each year, for many years now, I take a couple of extra palms and I place them round my house, and I remove the last years ones and then take them to my parents and brother's graves and tuck them into the soli there. It feels like I'm wishing them happy Easter and reminding myself of the promise of resurrection.

    In the UK the palms are dried already and they are shaped into crosses when we get them. One church we want to didn't distribute palms - we were asked to bring leaves and branches from our gardens to wave and they were blessed. The idea was that palms are local in Jerusalem so we used local branches in England. For those that didn't have gardens, branches were provided and the benedictine monks that ran the church took the opportunity to prune their garden at the same time. The idea of a bonfire party on the eve of the feast of St John the baptist is great.

    • @catholicmomanddaughter
      @catholicmomanddaughter  Před 4 měsíci

      That is so interesting, Cathy! We wonder here how they get them already dried and shaped as crosses. It's also a very interesting idea to bring local greenery; we know that in some areas of the world that is always the custom. It's so fun to read about everyone's traditions!

    Today was my first Palm Sunday. I only took one frond; originally I was going to hang it above an arch my apartment has, but now will maybe do the cross idea. Next year I might take two or three and do some weaving. I'm not sure I will do it with this first one, but perhaps will try painting on one in the future. Maybe verses from the given year's reading at Mass. I didn't know they could be cut or drawn upon, so now there feels like so many options.

    0:50 Yes, and to everyone watching, please don’t make crosses out of them during mass. It’s directing your attention away from the mass, it’s distracting to others who are trying to focus, and it’s also causing the small strips to fall on the floor. They’re blessed by Almighty God and need to be treated as such.

    Those are some great recommendations! I’ve never heard of the St John’s fires but I’ll have to look into that as a southerner.
    For my part, my palms will go in a nice old jar on my home altar. I will tie a string around the mouth of the jar and put a Saint’s medal on it or something of that nature. I may even place a Catholic sticker on the jar and fill it with flowers occasionally in memory of that moment of Christ entering Jerusalem. This helps my pray time a lot, just be sure to leave the palm fronds when you clear out the flowers 😆
    Great tips ladies! Thank you and God Bless

    Last year i made the crosses and hung all of them in the bedrooms over the beds, but this year I framed the crosses in a picture frame and put it on the fireplace mantel. ❤ Loved the video!

    My mother either put our palms under the mattress or behind the crucifix on the bedrooms. Years ago our priest in residence taught us how to braid a little flower and slide it down the length of a long frond. We also used the flowers to decorate the fan style palms in the church. Enjoyed your mother-daughter show. Have a blessed Easter.

    This is such a fun and informative video. Thank you so much! These are all great ideas. I especially love the idea of putting the palms in water when I get home from Mass so I'll do that next year. No one else in my family is Catholic (the ones who were Catholic have passed away) so I usually just get one small palm and put it near the crucifix in my little home office and then in the summer I have my husband bury the one from the previous year in our garden. I just realized last year he buried it in an area where we planted flower seeds and we had an unusually huge crop of flowers there. Sadly I didn't put this together until you mentioned it.

    Great suggestions. I used to make the crosses and leave them on my prayer table. In recent years I’ve folded mine into a scepter which I lay before my image of the Infant of Prague. I try to take them each year to the church before Ash Wednesday. When that is not an option I keep them until the next year and offer them along with those from the current year. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

    In New Zealand we use macrocapa leaves and I simply thread the leaf stalk through the hanging hook of my antique silver crucifix. We use last year's "palms" to start our first winter fire. We've just had our autumn equinox so that's three months from now till winter.

    I made a simple cross for my entryway and put some in a vase on my altar. My palm from last year will be buried in my backyard. ✨✨ BTW, I got excited when I saw the 5&2 tee shirt. As a huge Chosen fan (or fanatic), I have both the tee and hoodie & wear them proudly. ✝️📿🕊️✨🌷

    Thank you for this engaging topic. I never thought of about the strands of palms left behind. Now I am hoping I didn't step on any this morning or in the past, I am the person who just puts it behind a picture of our Blessed Mother. I see it more than I see the cross in my home. I tried to put it behind the cross but that didn't work. Not sure why. My family members used to make the cross during the homily, which I found entirely distracting. Thanks again for the interesting ideas.

    There are not many palms in Switzerland. So we use bouquets of evergreen bushes that we hang onto the crucifixes on the wall instead.
    We also make 'trees' out of a large piece of wood with a cross on top. It gets decorated with holly (for remembering the thorny crown), apples and evergreen.
    It is planted prominently at the entrance of our flat. If we had a house, it would be in the open by the door until the end of easter. It shows that Christ is king in that home.

    The palm here in Indoenesia is the full palm not just a single leaf. Each of us in the family bring one home and tuck the palms behind our crosses at our bedroom and take them out next year near to the church, to burn them for ash wednesday. I don’t think us Indonesians do it any other way, and thought all over the world have the same tradition, turns out even the palms given are different 😊

    • @catholicmomanddaughter
      @catholicmomanddaughter  Před 4 měsíci

      It's so interesting to read about all the traditions. It makes more sense to have a whole palm and not a single leaf- lol, we don't think the people in Jerusalem were all waving one skinny leaf when Jesus went by.... but that is how we do it here in the US.

    • @catholicmomanddaughter
      @catholicmomanddaughter  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hello- from what we understand, if a blessed object is destroyed (as by burning) the blessing is lost, which is why the ashes for Ash Wednesday receive a new blessing.

  • @beagrine2657

    In our family we would burn piece of palm when there were great winds or any risk of damage or danger of any harm. We gether together and pray an apostles creed an Our Father, and Hail Mary's asking God for protection. We were protected from many hailstorms, strong winds, tornados, etc, etc etc. Hallelujah
    Last year, we had some very strong winds at the ranch. We looked for palm to burn but didnt have any there. This year, i assure you, we will have some, just in case any thing should require urgent prayer.

    Palms get done a certain way into crosses then on Palm Sunday blessed and we fetch it from the alter ...then you leave you cross at home in a spot where it's visible . It stays there till the next year where it gets burned and the ashes used for Ash Wednesday . This is the Catholic way ...

    What happens to the ashes from the bonfire? I burn mine and have them in a container on my desk. My intention is to distribute around the house with a prayer. It's also my intent to use as protection on the automobile of those young drivers in my family. :)

    • @catholicmomanddaughter
      @catholicmomanddaughter  Před 4 měsíci

      Hello- it's our understanding that when a sacramental is destroyed (as in burning) the ashes that are left are not considered blessed. That is why if palms are burned for Ash Wednesday, those ashes have to be blessed by a priest. Hope that helps!
