- I review, breakdown and explain True Detective. I discuss Season 1 which starred Matthew McConaughey as Rust Cohle and Woody Harrelson as Marty. I react to why it is perfect, the meaning of the spiral symbol, the yellow king cult and Carcosa. I provide an analysis of the first season compared to season 4 and also other detective dramas.

Do you agree that season 1 of True Detective is one of the greatest detective dramas ever? It's a bold statement, but I do feel like it's up there! Let me know your thoughts below!
Big Facts brother 😎
I absolutely don't. (And it's not because of the following, but it must be said...)
And I think it's kind of baffling how people ignore how much Nic Pizzolato stole from other people. I think there's no bigger proof of how uncapable he is to create something like that on his own than his latter works.
A quick google search with "True Detective plagiarism" should suffice.
Yes, and Issa Lopez’ is a terrible rewrite of it
It’s my favorite season of anything, ever.
Was really good. But saying it was perfect is nuts. I’ve seen better series, breaking bad, sopranos. How could it be perfect if it wasn’t in conversation for best show? I’ve never heard anyone say true detective was best series ever.
To me, the genius of True Detective Season 1 is that Rust completes his arc from pessimist to optimist by encountering true evil. This perfectly encapsulates the paradoxical, mysterious nature of the human condition; to fully know a thing you must experience its opposite.
True Detective Season 1 is GOATED.
Best 8 Episode mini-series run of ALL TIME.
TOP 3 TV character and performance from Mcconaughey as Rust Cohle.
Just pure EPIC filmmaking.
Agree with everything you said there. It is just too good!
@@BrainPilotwhat do you think of silence of the lambs? Imo as far as detective drama go in general. Obv the gold standard for TV is true detective season 1 and for movies SOTL is still the best in that regard (Se7en coming in second). I guess people describe it as psychological thrillers but whatever you call it, all 3 still imo remain the best “disturbing” detective stories ever put to screen.
Yes it's actually hard to put into words how good it is. It's better than most films.
The amount of callbacks to previous statements is amazing and is what gives it that special feeling. Like when Marty talks about “the detectives curse” and how the clue is right under their nose - directly personified through the fact that Rust comes face to face with Errol 15 years before he realises it’s him
There are two particular scenes that have made me feel pure terror and distraught : the one where Reggie Ledoux is shown with the gas mask and the final scene when they’re chasing Errol in Carcosa; no other tv show or movie has made me feel the same. This show is memorable because it shows us how mankind can be so cruel to itself and also that we are all alone and it is up to mankind to self govern (sort of like how a spiral behaves as a derivative of its previous point). Marty and Rust’s characters are both written and acted with perfection. Both the literary and cinematographic aspects of the show make True Detective S1 a true masterpiece and an artwork that will remain relevant for decades if not centuries.
Bonus points for Alexandra Daddario’s excellent performance 🐈🤣.
Reggie Ledoux walking in the mask is the scariest montster I've seen in a while, because he was a human, yet knowing what he did and then seeing dirty, masked, tall, hatchet hanging down and that jock strap. Terrifying.
Knowing that it was an anthology series added to the suspense for me. Watching the Carcosa fight, I was half convinced Marty and Rust were going to die and it would all be for naught
For me it was when Rust asks Reggie why the antlers? The smile and look that Reggie gives him is terrifying.
Greatest single season of television in history imo. Perfect writing, setting, story, acting, casting, direction, cinematography, everything just hits the nail on the head.
Totally agree. Glad it’s getting its flowers still.
It deserves them!
I think TD S1 maybe should've be a Miniseries only. It was a perfect 8 hour storyline and would have been top miniseries if that make sense.
I think you hit the nail on the head when you describe the "complex simplicity" of the show. It's a testament to the skills of the writers and directors that they were able to present the plot in such an efficient and comprehensible way. Because there are a lot of shows that have effective horror elements and great character performances. But it's extremely rare for a crime drama to have such an immersive plot. But yet somehow this show managed to catch lightning in a bottle in every single category . It really is perfect.
Glad you also think the same! It did it so perfectly and it's not been done since which shows just how difficult it is to nail the simple things
watched the first three episodes and i'm usually not used to the slow pace shows but i was still hooked. then ep 4 had me locked into it with the biker scene. i can't wait to finish it the season.
Yeah this first season is so good!
The dope house robbery gone wrong is the best single shot take I ever seen in my life. The intensity is insane & chaotic. The best single take shot in history (Yes better than the Oldboy hallway fight)
Season 1 is a masterpiece. My fav 8 hours on tv.
Mindhunter had this level of potential. Netflix buried it. I wish some other network/ott would pick it up and provide closure to the viewers.
Yeah Mindhunter was very similar in tone to the first season. There's talk of it coming back for a season 3. We can only hope 🙏
Netflix didn't bury it, David Fincher (sort of) did.
I do hope Mindhunter returns. It is a great show.
@@VIK_1903 I think it was a combination effort. It wasn't getting enough viewers to justify the budget, and Fincher decided to leave the project instead of deal with a drop in in the production budget because he felt it would lower the quality of the show.
Also have to add how god damn good the score was-it was impeccable, all the little details and sounds, think back to those little Jabs of really unsettling sounds as rust gets dropped off right before the stash house raid in the street and checks his pulse, after he sniffs the meth off Ginger’s hand, when guy Leonard Frances says “I’ll tell you, about the yellow king” (cue that off beat horn) or when rust revisits the Dora Lange crime scene 7 years later. I can name so many more examples. I can’t stop talking about how good this show is
McConaughey and Harrelson are 2 of my favorite actors, and this series was truly one of the best of all time. It was gritty, eerie and i was engaged the whole time....
You well described the simple complex structure of season 1. To me there is a lack of consistency in season 4, some episodes emphasize supernatural elements and some are back at the rationale level.
I just finished this season today for the first time ever and I'm blown away. Quickest 8 episodes I've ever watched and Rust is a captivating character.
I think Cary Fukunaga needs more praise on this. Nick P wrote some of the other seasons and they just didn't have it. maybe because he spent much more time on writing season 1
Yeah, I think Nic P could have used more help writing the later seasons.
2 big things that put true detective over the wire
1.Alexandra Daddario
2.Alexandra Daddario
A true example of lightening in a bottle. Rhust made the season and even through there are tons of portrayals of the tortured detective he is just on another level.
Yeah he was incredible. Such an iconic character!
I started this yesterday and watched it ALL into this morning. Unbelievably excellent!
Watched it 10 times already it's a masterpiece! My favorite scene is the chat with the yellow king.
Best first season one of any show.
100%! Those eight episodes are just so hard to beat
Im going to commit sacrilege here- I think TD s1 is BETTER than the Wire...😬
Holy ish! You started it now 😅
I agree. I'm a huge Wire fan, watched the whole series 4 or 5 times now but nothing compares to TD1. I've never been as entranced and emotionally invested in anything on screen like I was for this. Better Call Saul is the only thing that comes close for me.
It's far better than The Wire, which often drags and rehashes the same scenarios.
The wire is the greatest show of all time (my opinion, and it’s not by a landslide), and TD S1 is the greatest single season of all time. Barely beating out season 4 of Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones IMO
Ill go as far as to say TD1 is better than any season of any tv show apart from breaking bad/better call saul. Come at me.
I think/believe that the Sopranos is the greatest show in the history of television. Yet there isn’t a season that touches True Detective season 1. There’s no bad scene/episode - it’s remarkable.
First season is amazing. It’s obvious with s4 that Issa had to rely on what worked with s1 to draw more viewers. It doesn’t make up for the terrible dialogue and confusion of all the open ended storylines that won’t come to an end in the next episode, even if it’s 24 hours long.
Great comparison, absolutely to the point. The writing of Martys & Rusts story was so much better prepared ( and filmed) than most of modern tv-series. The characters and their developement were truly convincing.
I like your takes. Came for salt burn analysis, stayed for this. Subbed.
Aye, thanks a lot man!
There are very few pieces of medium I wish to see or play for the first time again.... I really wish this was one piece I can unsee to experience again with fresh eyes
First one reminds me of Mr Mercedes or The Outsider 😊
I love mini series format and season one of True Detective is imo exactly that. It's laser focused on delivering a compelling story, it has no hints whatsoever about future seasons. Directors and writers being completely in sync of the episode structure, the individual stories and the main narrative. It's a very rare sight to see
Agreed. Now…if you want to experience True Detective, but in a video game, play Disco Elysium. The most rich philosophy and dialogue in any game, ever.
I purchased Season 1 on CZcams from Max Streaming but I can't find it. Can anyone help?
This plus Mindhunter, Sinner, Night Of, holy quartet of mystery shows 😅
Honestly these shows that try to recreate true d s1 just make it feel that much better. Nothing will come close-were there any flaws? I was never confused during this show, it was complicated but not convoluted. So damn good.
Season 1 isn't completely perfect, I am sure we can nitpick some flaws, but goddamn as a whole package, it's up there in "TV" greats.
Best season of any show I’ve ever seen. Better than any movie or anything else. It is utterly phenomenal.
Yeah for 8 episodes it is just so good!
for me, season 1 of True Detective is the greatest single season of a show of all time
truly perfect
TD, s1 is the best television I have ever had the pleasure of viewing in 48 years of life. What an experience!
Yeah it is an amazing show!
I’ll watch other shows and complain that they aren’t as good as True Detective season 1. It’s unreal how good it is.
It is just so good. It does the basics so well. When you nail that, the possibilities are endless as the foundation is solid to it's core
Season 1 will never be touched. Season 3 (overlooked) and 4 are on par with each other and very good seasons of TV in general. Season 1 is just a criterion collection masterclass. That’s that.
controlled confusion - so true
True Detective Season 1 is truly the greatest police drama ever. That accolade previously belongs to NYPD Blues. Does anyone disagree?
This first season is incredible!
In the time it came out, it was, but definitely the best of the series. Other series have come out trying to copy it, but no other show has been able to capture the tv audience or originality of True Detective Season 1.
It was brilliant. My favourite
when you watch the latest season and see the title like this, you know the latest season doesn't stick the landing
It's basically just DESOLATION JONES investigating THE INVISIBLES, but that's why I love it. ;)
U should check out the wire although it’s not really a detective show
One of the best shows ever. How sad the last season was.
Yeah that first season was something special!
Couldn’t agree more
Being from the UK, settings in the United States are so much more alluring. There's just more to work with ... Slough Horses is probably the only UK crime show that has pulled me in
It’s all about simplicity!!! All writers have to do is research actual crimes and mold a story. Sad what S4 has become:(
Aye. It reminds me of that Einstein quote: "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough".
Numero uno 🙌
agreed all points
It saddens me that season 4 did so much better than the other seasons, and by a lot apparently. Now that I’ve seen the end of it, season 4 is a complete abomination but since so many ppl watched it, the same showrunner is doing the next season too 😭😭😑🔫
I said in your last video that I'll gladly watch all season 1 TD videos, and so I'm here! Thank you for the great content. God bless in Lord Jesus Christ's name, amen!! 😊
Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
I agree 100%
Good to hear!
I think season 1 is the single best season of television, there is so many shows that are better but all those shows ran for multiple seasons. Like breaking bad for example undisputed one of the best tv shows ever but its 5 seasons without all 5 seasons the show isn't as good If that makes sense. Season one of true detective is a stand alone masterpiece told in one season only. thats why I think its the single best season of television.
Yeah in terms of singular seasons it is definitely up there!
Season 1 Westworld
Ill have to watch that for sure thank you my brotha 👍@@kevincarter2020
what are the odds , recently i found out about night country and watch only season 4 , why is there the same logo , lol
Masterpiece
It really is!
Im glad that there are only 6 episodes to Night Country. It's a hot mess. Poor structure, not even really a detective mystery, more of a horror and supernatural show that unsuccessfully is dressed up/presented as a detective story. It really doesn't have the TD DNA. Although have panned seasons 2 and 3, they did still at least feel like they were part of the TD anthology. Night Country does not, is poorly written and directed. I think the best things about Night Country are Jodi Foster and Kali Reis, who sadly are not enough to save it from itself. In my opinion, the best seasons are first season 1, then 3, and finally 2. I wouldn't include Night Country as part of the franchise.
Probably the reason it feels so differently than the others to you is for the first time in the series, the original show's creator - Pizzolatto - wasn't involved in the creation of this one. He even criticized season 4 and called it stupid.
The simplest reason for me is the cast. The first season just nailed the cast
Yeah the casting was just spot on!
season 2 was also great
Yes, superior writing and superior actors..
Top shelf stuff!
Probably one of the best tv series ever.
It really is!
i've just watched it for the first time.... loved it, but i have a few comments about it, harrelson story could have been a bit better, i would have added more violence and drama, so at the end he could have redeem him self with matthew after they catch "the killer" / then it could have been perfect in 6 episodes, they stretched it a bit, 8 was too much / i would have added more details about what got me hooked at the end... carcosa's city, the yellow king, who was he, why the yellow king wanted terror and horror over the earth, all the mysticism, matthews character brought to the series, could have got the final episodes a lot weirder... like getting the audience under the black and sinister world of the ocult... shame 2 season didnt follow the story behind it.
It's fantastic theater that spends the whole time telling you that it's theater and that just makes you more invested and all of the time it's telling you not to believe all the other theater out there that pretends to be truth.
Saw it in the UK Sept 2014 just using a phone no WiFi. Never watched it again since then but looked at a lot of clips. I kinda knew it was the last big TV show there was ever gonna be because the West is finished atomised culture is no longer possible. That was 10 years ago there was never a TV season any thing like it since then. It gave Amurika its black pill but in West Europe the novels of Houellebecq and the 2nd wave of Japanese S. Korean and French cinema late 90s- 2010 approx had delivered the same message. The black pill end. That's why I immediately picked up on the show. It was the same vibes. But I'm afraid the game of culture is long over and done. Something right out of TD coming for real in 2020- 2024. The guy who tried to describe the insane plot of TD season 2 should get medal. I never did get my TD T shirt. It was a great memory over taken by reality. RIP TD 2014 UK.
Edge of Darkness was a pretty good British show.
I've not seen that! I'll add it to my list
The reason season 1 is so good is the same reason a band's first album is always there best... The first season was basically Nick Pizzolatto's life's work at that point. He wrote some other stuff here and there but True Detective was a lifetime of good ideas up to that point. No rush to write like for season 2 and no studio input just a story that he had 20-30yrs to think about
It’s funny when you encounter people who you just know have never watched x-files.
2nd greatest show ever TD 1, ONLY 1 SEASON, ONLY BEHIND THE SOPRANOS WHICH HAD 6, MORE REALLY
I gave it a chance, but I really don't like Night Country. I keep wanting more of the case and less of the family drama and side plots. I made it four episodes.
8:31 Woody Hullson? 🙊
I thought you already made this video lol
Nooo, I did an in-depth look at Childress!
😎🙏💯
What I disliked was that the casting of women felt more for woody harresons desire then for reality. This took a bit of realism from me.
But the show is next level. The dialogue, the structure, the cinematography. Even the long car rides. And and it felt like there was stakes. At the last scene I was jumping in anxiety with the possibility of their deaths. This is rare!
It was perfect up to and including episode 4. The final two episodes, while still very good compared to other tv, were a bit of a letdown.
TD season1 is a perfect example of Show; don't tell.
Yeah it's incredible!
True detective season 1
Westworld season 1
Both are best hours of tv history
Sadly their sequel seasons aren't.
Fellas, how bad it is the 4th season? Like fr
A short story (8 episodes) cannot be compared with a book (40-60+ episodes).
True Detective is the best “short story” in this genre. But The Wire is the best “book” in this genre. No comparisons.
That's an interesting way to put it!
I don’t get how Pizzolatto can write this masterpiece and then make such bad seasons after…..and season 4 is a joke throwing in season 1 Easter eggs like Tuttle owning the mine and Tsalal, the spirals, the antlers and having Rusts mom and dad appear seem like cheap gimmicks to try and bring in the die hard season 1 lovers but i guarantee it won’t connect to the Tuttle/Childress cult, the only remaining Tuttle was the Senator Eddie Tuttle and that was in 2012 I highly doubt this cult has so much reach that it even came to Ennis which coincidentally is where Rust is from it’s so cheap and stupid…..and if Peter ends up being the killer that would be a horrible twist…..season 4 is a disaster
I don't think season 2 and 3 were bad. He just set the bar too high on his first season, creating a standard that was going to be nearly impossible to live up to. Kind of like what the movie Jaws did for its sequels.
By "Night Country" surely he meant GIRL DETECTIVE, which equates to divisive bilge for slow thinkers to consume as the latest quote unquote content.
Can’t recreate season 1. Season 4 is solely relying on its tie in to season one and besides showing the Spiral and mentioning Travis Cole there nothing good or special going
HBO is just different gravy
i haven’t even watched any of the other seasons once i realized the second season was a new story i stopped watching. everyone involved crushed this first season and it cannot be redone imo
I get it... rusty is a really cool character.... but everyone over looks the sins of rust and shits on marty
Its bc we're all fucked in the head and the nihilism and pessimism that rust eloquently describes resonates with us. The rest is just a regular story
Night country is terrible
This season is great. True Detective is like star trek movies - 1 and 3 are good, 2 and 4 suck
Spoiler alert! Ou after twenty years, why green ears? A yes it is 😂Fans know what I mean otherwise perfect yes;)
>broadchurch
>good
lol, lmao
the trouble with True Detective season 1 being perfect, is that it shows just how inferior the other seasons are. Season 2 and 3 were awful and season 4 is watchable
Season 1- Absolutely Amazing
Season 2- Trash
Season 3- Very Good
Season 4- Bad
A show that peaked in its first season 😞
I'm one of those weird people that enjoyed Season 2 and what it tried to accomplish, despite all its flaws.
Yes it was excellent but season 2 became my favourite. Season 4 is disappointing.
Season 2 has some very good characters. I think it's the plot that holds it back, especially its structure and how it's revealed throughout the series. But the character development and drama was all excellent.
Diversity quotas end ruining what ever it touches.
It was real good. Not even close to perfect. Definitely not perfect
What was wrong with it?
Why say something like that and then not even provide a single example of something to backup your view?
@@0v3rgr0wn too many unsolved questions. What was motive for killings? No explanation of yellow king. It wasn’t an action pack show. Kind boring. Lots a long dialogue . How’s that?
@@Johnnyrocks34 Too many unsolved questions? Like what? And anyways I think the show didn’t need to wrap everything up in a neat little bow. Use your imagination.
Why do we need Yellow King explained? It’s more eerie being vague.
Not an action packed show? Boring? Lot’s of long dialogue? This isn’t Marvel. Character work was an important part of the show. After all, it was about Rust and Marty and how the case affected them, not just the mystery of the case itself.
@@Johnnyrocks34Are you one of those who needs to know who/what Bombadil really was? Mysteries are mystical only as long as they keep their mystique. Anyway, The Yellow King was a Lovecraft reference. Nightmarish psychedelia doesn't need to be grounded.
Sorry, but I don't agree that it is one of the greatest detective dramas. I think it is the greatest season of fictional TV period.
Wow!
@@BrainPilot High praise, I know. My feelings may be influenced by the fact that, watching this with my best friend when it was originally on, we both said, "that's us!" Not detectives, but in terms of personalities, I was definitely Rust while he was Marty. To make it even more, after being friends for many years, we had a falling out and haven't spoken in 4 years. (No, I didn't have sex with his wife)
I definitely enjoyed bits, but I also thought it was kind of boring and silly :) My friend said she felt it was like wannabe profound bs for the bros :)
It‘s 90% outstanding and definitely the most profound tv show/film ever made.
However sometimes the slow pacing, some unresolved payoffs, and quite frankly unclimactic middle and end keeps this show lower than Lost/Heroes/Breaking Bad/Dexter.
TDs1 was great until the end, then it shat the bed.
What do you think was bad about the ending?!
What’s wrong with the ending?
it was not bad until that stupid ending.
I actually really liked the ending lol
The end is amazing
Why was the ending stupid?
