This is from the 1944 musical film "Meet Me in St. Louis". This film introduced the song. Many artists have sang it since, but nobody ever did it better than Judy Garland. Merry Christmas Michael🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Judy Garland had one of the best voices ever.
Judy. Top 5 of all time. This performance is legendary.
The little girl is Margaret O'Brien. She's in some wonderful old movies. Plays Judy's sister in this movie.
The song had resonance as the film was shot during WW II. Her rendition is the finest, as it conveys the resolve, thoughts, hopes and fears of the planet. Judy Garland was the best.
TY for playing this video of Judy Garland, an American Icon ❤
Such a sad, melancholy song sung magnificently by Judy Garland.
That is Margaret O'Brien with Judy. She could cry at the drop of a hat.
My favorite Judy Garland movie, ‘Meet Me in St. Louis.’
This song was written just for her, and she demanded changes that made it better.
They were all very sad at this point in the film, as you can see her little sister looking so emotional half way through the song. Their whole lives were about to change. The song was basically ‘we still have each other.’
The little girl was given a junior Oscar, a smaller statue they gave children who gave exceptional performances, and went on to make many movies. Her name is Margaret O’Brien.
She played the youngest sister Tootie, in this film and was hilarious. She had numerous dolls. Many of which had terminal illnesses. When they ‘died’ she would take them to the cemetery across the street and bury them.
When they were told they were moving, she said, ‘I’m taking all my dolls. The dead ones to.’ And her sister Agnes said, ‘I’ll help you dig them up.’
That was one of my favorite lines in the film.
The Trolley Song, . . .
It was a single take cold read. They handed her the sheet music, she sight read it. The movie version is that sight reading, one take performance.
Beautiful, iconic, immortal Judy. ❤️
Judy Garland’s daughter is Liza Minnelli.
And Lorna Luft!
Judy Garland married Vincent Minnelli (who directed Meet Me In Saint Louis) the following year. Daughter Liza was born the year after that. It's one of my favorite movies. I love Margaret O'Brien.
In the movie the family is sad because their father has taken a promotion that moves them from their beloved St. Louis to New York City. In the spring the World's Fair is going to take place in St. Louis and they will only see it as visitors. They live St. Louis and it's beauty, their neighbors, and their life. The father is sad because no one is happy about his promotion as he has worked so hard to be a good provider. He is being rewarded and feels sad they don't want to go. It's a beautiful movie, lots of love and laughter. The scene that follows this will rip your heart out. Margaret O'Brien is a great child actress who tugged at everyone's heart strings.
Judy Garland. ❤❤❤
Merry Christmas Michael!
A wonderful song from the movie "Meet Me in Saint Louis"
Michael, the background on this song us that the father got promoted, and us moving the family to NYC. The littlest girl has never lived anywhere but St Louis (all her dolls are buried in the backyard), the two oldest girls gave sweethearts on the verge of proposing, and they are all heartbroken at the thought. Big sister comforts little sister with thus thought. We have lived thus movie for years.
Michael, check out "The Man that got Away", from the original A Star is Born.
Ya gotta watch, "Meet Me in St. Louis". A perfect film for Christmas. It's a joyful film...charming and funny. Full of great songs...I should of started with, it's a musical. Opps.
" Auld Lang Syne", by Dan Fogelberg will wring your heart. My favorite Christmas song.
"Linus and Lucy", by Vince Guaraldi...right up there with Christmas fudge!
" Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree", by Brenda Lee...classic, toe tapping...ain't no true Yule without this one.
"Run, Run Rudolph", by Chuck Berry...no explanation needed.
and
" All I Want for Christmas is You", by Mariah Carey, A modern classic.
There's my list. I bet you're sorry you ask😋 but thanks anyway. Another great reaction!
The movie was about , the family was sad they were going to move to New York from their home in St. Louis ..
But after the song, the father decided they were going to stay …..
Just a note on the movie; The plot was that their father gets a big promotion to a firm in New York City. This meant that they had to move from their home in St. Louis. His wife and daughters, two played by Judy Garland, and the young one, Margaret O'Brien, exemplify their sadness in this scene, where Judy sings, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". The period to which the movie is set, is around 1900. This beloved classic movie is "Meet Me In St. Louis", originally released in 1944. Highly recommeded.
Frank Sinatra said it best! He once told a interviewer that eventually he and all the other singers will be forgotten, but never Judy.
The girl is Margaret O’Brian one of the top child actors of the time.
I haven’t been willing to listen to any version of this song that doesn’t have the “muddle through” line since I found out it existed. I always heard the usual ones before that, where I guess they decided that was too gloomy and decided to change it? I think it’s brilliant. We don’t all have it great all the time and sometimes you’re just muddling through. I resonate with that.
And I do prefer her version. First and best.
Judy Garland was one of the most talented people that ever existed on planet earth. Sadly she also was one of the most fragile. She simply couldn't handle the pressures of fame and life. Reminds me a little of Amy Winehouse oddly.
The little girl Margaret O'Brien who Judy sings to is still alive and she talks about her singing to her.
To me, this is the best and most emotional version of this song. Frank does a nice version, but this one tugs my heart.
Have a wonderful holiday Michael.
Great old movie love it my husband’s favorite Christmas song !
I have a Christmas request Steve Perry Winter Wonderland recorded in 2021 at 73
Michael Duffy, could you please give Bros ~ Silent Night a reaction ?..
I love Judy Garland!!!
This is the best version of this song ever, Judy Garland’s voice, just awesome!!❤
Dude, you're wise. It transports us to another era, this beautiful song. Bravo Michael 👍👍👍
Michael, I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Healthy, Happy New Year.
You too steven wish health and happiness to you and the fam! 🙏
the reason for the song is that their father is leaving St. Louis and taking them with him and they don'y want to go and move.
Remakes of this song don’t work because they try to make it happy. Even words were changed to make it more marketable. But it supposed to be melancholy. Happy🎄!
cheery mishmash ,just found a clip of this song sung by judy and lorna ..her daughter going to perouse it now
No from movie meet me in St. Louis great movie
Is it always the same brand of mayonaise?
. . .
WWII.
As usual, once Judy sang a song it was sung, no need to cover it again.
