  • Rostock is a northern German independent city , Hanseatic and university city on the Baltic Sea . It is located in the Mecklenburg. With 208,400 inhabitants , it is the most populous city in Mecklenburg and the only major city to be one of the four regional centers in the state. The city of Rostock bears the designation Hanseatic and University City.
The urban area extends around 16 kilometers on both sides of the Warnow to its mouth in the Baltic Sea in the district of Warnemünde. Downtown is on the left bank of the river. Rostock is characterized by its location by the sea, its port and the University of Rostock, which was founded in 1419 and is one of the oldest universities in Germany. The port of Rostock, which is important for ferry traffic and goods handling , and the largest German cruise port in Warnemünde are located in the city area. The Hanse Sail, founded in 1991 , has developed into one of the major maritime events in the Baltic Sea region.
The city belonged to the Grand Duchy until 1918 and then to the Free State of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. As the largest city in Mecklenburg, Rostock has always been the economic center of the state. In addition to being the capital and residential city of Schwerin, Rostock with its university was also a center of culture and science in Mecklenburg.
Rostock also became an important technology location, which made the city an important target of the air war in the Second World War in the 1940s . In the GDR period, Rostock was a district town from 1952 to 1990 ; the port was expanded to become the most important in the GDR and the city was systematically expanded with new urban areas until it grew to over 250,000 inhabitants.
After 1990, Rostock lost about a fifth of its inhabitants due to emigration, and Rostock's economy has also changed considerably: the importance of the shipbuilding industry has declined sharply; many new jobs were created in tourism and the service sector; The city's largest employer is now the university with the university clinic.

Germany is a beautiful country being destroyed gradually by vandalism, especially with graffiti.
