Just an explanation that I think is interesting as to why the color "blue" is in the city of Chauen or Chefchaouen. Mohamed Saad Alami, was mayor of Chauen for 20 years and explained after an interview with La Vanguardia (Spanish newspaper), that the aesthetic criteria of the city's residents began to change in the late 90s for commercial reasons. Traditionally, the outside of houses in Chefchaouen was painted white, but the lower part of the wall, up to a height of two meters, was always painted a very light blue, a color known locally as “nila”, a word perhaps related to “indigo”. This color was the result of mixing a few drops of blue dye with lime, and the lower part painted in this tone was the waqfa (the height of the human being when standing), so called because it was the space that could be painted. the woman, responsible for this task, and which was the sum of her height and the extension reached by her arm. Some bazaars that sold crafts to tourists insisted on painting their facades blue in dark tones to distinguish themselves from other stores and attract the attention of visitors to the city.
