- Zeinab Badawi speaks to the South African comedian Trevor Noah. How did a poor boy who grew up with a black mother and white father under apartheid, become the presenter of one of America’s most influential TV programmes - The Daily Show?
Source and footage from BBC World Service
She wasn't interviewing him, she was on a mission to take him down. Glad Trevor showed the patience & class.
I uld hv left her with a half bandaged face just two minutes into the interview
Uhm... You should know that this show is specifically designed to ask difficult questions. That's why it's called hard talk. She did exactly what she was supposed to do
He is waaaay too intelligent to fall in this kind of traps, she should have informed herself about him better before!
@@topsydoddle1 she should have done it smarter then
That's why it is called *HARDTALK*
The level of patience Trevor exhibited was outstanding.
Chariss Rausaw My role model after Ghandi
Yes he's awesome! I have so much respect for him.
I disagree..she's a terrible interviewer. She misunderstands the meaning of the term Hard Talk. It means you examine deeply the interviewee's positions, internal contradictions and all.
You make them face their internal logical contradictions and then account for them. It's not to talk over your interviewee.
The interviewer is there to challenge NOT to be rude or to annoy. She always does BOTH those things. They should change the name of the program to suit her.
They should call it 'Annoying Talk'. The problem she and her immediate predecessor had is that it requires real intelligence to fully interrogate someone's views.
Asking good questions within a conversation even with preparation is a difficult business. Not everyone can do it.
You have to REALLY understand the other person's point of view to question them on it AND you have to be quick witted and mentally flexible in order to flow and keep up with the twists and turns of a conversation.
Not everyone can do this...Ms Bardawi certainly can't.
@@DavidBarnwell876tkdja Well said, she's very ignorant!
@@yosanted4553 i would have walked out ... hell punched her face in the process
This was not an interview, it was an attack. Trevor handled her with class. Super Proud.🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
🇿🇦 we here comedy is about freedom of preech
You INTERVIEWING AN INTELLIGENT PERSON
Yes ...She wasn't ready.
This interview teaches you to never under estimate someone. Also years of experience cn never make up for someone with talent and an own mind. History will remember this woman and Chris Rock on how to embarrass yourself on TV
Trevor Noah is usually a ‘woke clown’, but I was on his side with this one. She was trying to make an issue out of nothing! 🙄
Love Trevor Noah🇿🇦 Really didn't like how she interviewed him, but he nailed it!
“I’m that color and I wouldn’t say that!”
You are not Trevor Noah, you grew up in Britain from the age of two, he was born and raised in South Africa during a time when his existence was actually technically legal, he speaks openly about how this affected him and also how his mother handled it was good humour and his family loves to make jokes and that is how they connect. You have two very different lives and the contexts of those lives impact your views and you ability to handle humor. Trevor Noah acknowledges and raises awareness of racial issues through humour and listens to many different stories while telling his own in a way that is consumable for a broader audience meanwhile you attack those who you view have a lesser opinion or have had a different experience and relationship with their racial identity. Not every black person has had the same experiences especially when they live in different countries, like in Trevor Noah’s case where most of his community was also black people (mostly due to the separation of races in South Africa). Context is everything.
Zeinab Badawi was so unprofessional this interview I was so frustrated throughout it because she just wanted to sit there and rant at him about how she thinks he is wrong and isn’t a good black person instead of letting him answer the questions she is meant to be asking and letting him explain. Dumb questions too might I add that are just geared to try to make Trevor Noah look bad. He took it in stride, I would have simply walked out and say “good day, you can rant to the camera now cause that all you wanted to do anyways”
100% yes to everything you said
this a poor job by her and her anger is very much misguided. I commend Trevor for continuing and trying to reason and explain to Zainab cause even though it looks really bad on her end I don't think her intentions were malicious whatsoever.
She was so ignorant it was amazing. I’ve never seen such an amateur interviewer, so unprofessional!! I hope they removed her from doing these kinds of interviews, they need someone with class.
@@marshmallow5873 she definitely was being malicious, don't kid yourself
Im not condoning what she did and it sort of seemed like she was attacking him and was trying impose on him But I think its more of a collision of ideology .... She is someone who grew up in racism compared to trevor noah who grew up in africa ..... Racism must have been very serious issue for her since she grew up in the motherland of racism. Maybe she couldnt stand the idea of someone making jokes about such serious issues. Still she could have conducted herself better.......
@@sharveshvijayanv2994 are you down playing apartheid? What you see being said about it on Google is just the tip of an iceberg,I tell you this as a BLACK South African, who lives there also.
This video proves that having an "English" accent doesn't make one intelligent.
I should show this to these model c kids
Truth be told
Best comment ever!!!!!!!!!!
I definitely agree 100% - ENGLISH IS JUST ANOTHER LANGUAGE, AND DEFINITELY NOT A LEVEL OF INTELLIGENCE!!!!! THIS WOMAN NEEDS A LIFE SHE CLEARLY DOES NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS IS ABOUT AND SHE KEEPS ON MENTIONING WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING - OTHERS MEANING - HERSELF!!!!!!!!!!
She's attacking from a baseless position which you can tell she does not really believe herself. She's been given talking points, probably by her production team. Zeinab Badawi is actually very intelligent and well respected, and I don't know why she seems to be on the attack here...
*She’s trying so hard to be wise, but proves to be the opposite.*
She is hard stupid. A shame for women and black people.
I couldn't agree more.
It would seem she is trying to force him into accepting he is something he is not, which is racist. 🤔
That’s how an happy person react, I feel sorry for her
She tried to trap him. But. Clever Noah was ready. For him, it comes naturally.
She is a real bullshit.
The Rihanna analogy was genius... basically called her crazy and doesn't look like she caught that.
I thought so too lol
Slick jabs by Noah
Love a good analogy, perfect way to meet stupid ppl where they at
I commend Trevor Noah for keeping his calm and handling the situation so eloquently. This was the most unprofessional interviewer I’ve ever seen, she was practically speaks over him and for him. If anything this made me admire Trevor Noah’s comedy tenfold more.
*unprofessional interviewer
There is nothing hard about her talk! Can't talk should be the title 🤔🤦♀️
When you are wrong it’s smart to be calm
"Without context, all conversation is meaningless" - Trevor Noah
that was brilliant!
So true.
Lol you took that quote out of context
@@matthewfourie3702 lol - out of context as well
💯💯
She thought she was interviwing a funny joke of a person. What she didnt reallize was tha trevor noah is an extremely smart person who happens to be very funny.
She was on a mission to own him and she failed.
I think he is funny because he is Intelligent. Only true smart people can be jovial in the face of adversity. They find ways to survive happily.
Yea
Exactly!! She was not ready for the intellect
Trevor Noah was masterful in this interview. The interviewer was on a mission to discredit him and failed miserably.
This interviewer is the definition of "You will hear my point and I will do my best to make you say what I want you to say" She wasn't here to hear Trevor. She just wasn't ready for how smart and intelligent this man is.
When Trevor was performing in South Africa he made many “racial” jokes. He took us ALL, black, white, green, yellow, apart. He was never offensive but extremely funny the way he joked about our characteristics. Everyone laughed and if we can’t laugh at ourselves then the world is becoming a very sad place. Well done Mr Noah. You are a great comedian and handled this interview with skill and decorum.
Wait, you're green?
No amount of British accent could cover up the idiocy of this malicious interviewer.
Its good he put her in her place. What an intelligent Guy
How would a British accent cover up idiocy?!
@@jammadamma It's a stereotype about Received Pronunciation that they are somehow smarter. I don't know where it came from.
my thoughts exactly
Good one 🤣🤣🤣
"How to defend yourself and get your views across, without argument or offense 101", by Trevor Noah
Louise Laliberte omg he was great I was ready to come thru the phone 😂😂😂 this is a masterclass in itself
He is always so in touch with his feelings and able to apply wisdom at the same time.
💖💖💖💖well done Trevor
Favorite comment right here. Could not have said it any better myself.
@@luisantony199 It's in a psychological video, using him as a main example,I can't remember the title but I think it was "how to win an argument without arguing Trevor Noah" something along those lines
As an African I'm not offended and find Trevor depiction of our accents, culture and social etiquette completely right on and hilarious...😂😂 Keep it coming ❤
Exactly! There is that Joke he tells about how Americans called that wild beast with white and black stripes a "Ziibra" and not "Zebra". He goes on to say, it's almost the same construct when one say "Debrah" and not "Dibrah". Now my favorite is when he concludes "plus you can't name them cause you don't have them". The whole crowd caught fire 😂😂😂😂😂
Though I have not been to the US or Europe for that matter, can I assume they don't have Zebras 🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂. Definitely not! but we (Both Africans and Americans) understood the context. Actually he said the last phrase with a smile and quite a low tone.
That's how much we love comedy.
This man presented his point so well.
He is very patient and she is....
Trevor made her look and sound stupid. My level of respect for Trevor just went up 1000 notches. She tried to break him but she failed miserably.
Everything you said and wrote down is true. It seems her way of doing her job isn't right and most British people aren't too intelligent and clever while talking and dealing with problems. She's in the wrong job. Trevor is a great person that knows how to make people laugh and enjoy is comedy.
In he just a bright mind!?!
Listen this fellow south african is very educated, she was never gonna win!!
I love the look on Trevor's face, a couple of times, like he's both thoroughly amused and somewhat surprised by her arrogance.
@PurelyAfrican If she is "not self hating and has respect for herself and race," as you say, I applaud her for that. From this interview, however, it's difficult to know if that's true or not. What myself and most of the commenters here are taking issue with is the hostile manner with which she conducted her interview and the contrasting, patient, graceful and intelligent manner in which Trevor responded. That's all.
karen lorraine lol true
The stupidity she portrays is shocking him
Great observation
And ignorance..
What a level-headed view this man has. He stayed true to himself no matter how hard the interviewer tried to discredit him.
I was in utter disbelief with how hard this interviewer was trying to take Trevor Noah down. She had a very strong group of opinions about every aspect of a comedians role. I found it frustrating how she kept cutting him off. She could have said ' I don't like what you do' and been much more honest.
British media and journalists are like for that. They nitpick and smear individuals. They create the news instead of reporting it.
This woman clearly does not like chocolate.
She's the personification of whats wrong with comedy today. She, with MANY others, 1) aren't naturally funny and 2) can't sense irony from a mile away!
Samke Makhoba , tht was relly good
When my children were small I called them chocolate babies and I absolutely love chocolate
This woman is white in her thinking
LOL
Thanks to the interviewer, I respect Trevor more than ever
beautiful perspective :*
It's hard to argue with someone who was taught to hate who they are. The way Trevor refers to chocolate is that of joy, regardless of the color of the chocolate.
She was a horrible interviewer she was just attacking him telling him what he should regret . It’s called freedom of speech
This woman is just searching for something to confront him with. Weird and annoying.
Absolutely agree
Well she's british, they're culturally like that, which explains Brexit.
No. She came prepared with her bundle of quotes and arguments and she wants to cover it. So what if Trevor answered it
Right!!!!!
My gosh....she looks so stupid, not professional and jst embarrassing
Ya, “weird” is a great way to put it!!
Trevor is a genius, she lost every argument with him because she's just there to stir the pot but he knows exactly what he's doing. Keep laughing Trevor, nailed it again.
definitely accusations not questions...fucking chocolate....really?! OMG mountains out of mole hills.
This is exactly what I thought, it's very easy to think that a standup comedian will just find something that makes people cackle and not think deeply about it's consequences because that's exactly how a lot of them actually are but the way he(very calmly and poised) differentiated between his chocolate joke and the leaking chocolate joke shows you just how seriously he takes his craft.
Trevor probably has interviewed more people in his career with varying opinions than she has so he has a sound background in civil conversation. He is just a genuinely smart African American......well she is just chocolate
Vwo KLT 2024
Big ups to Trevor Noah. Handled the whole conversation with sheer class and brilliance.
I came to the comment section to express my disgust toward the interviewer.
But I'm realizing that it won't be necessary.
I am very satisfied with what I read.
Thank you guys.
Best comment ever!👏
Fantastic interview from an excellent interviewer
@@vaselinetub I do think that we shall not agree on this but yes, she really touched sensitive points. You see, when comedians are usually aaked to account for some of their actuins and things that they say, their usual answers is: "it is just comedy". People need to take on their responsibilities. I do like Trevor Noah and most of his jokes. However, he needs to be held responsible for what he says. This is especially why I like the actuon of the lady - not giving him the opportunity to talk his way out of what hewas asked.
I totally echo this.
@@gbengaagbona2195 I see your point. We can actually consider that a f#cked up interview is after all a good interview (because well, here we are talking about it. It is controversial). From that perspective I can agree with you.
But my problem is the way she sees her own blackness. Her line of questions tells that she sees her blackness as disease. And that's the problem with many anti racists (black or white). They treat blackness like a by-default illness. Like an anomaly that begs for sympathy and even pity. That's why they feel offended by the slightest racial joke.
And that's why I think she was totally unqualified to interview Trevor Noah.
The woman probably thought Trevor would be a walkover.
Trevor was like "Not Today".
You school her Trevor Noah! We're behind you
Very proud at how amazingly Trevor responded, he's both intelligent and funny 🔥❤ Will support you always 🇿🇦
This interviewer had her own mission that was to attack Trevor but thanks to Trevor for his well behaved character..he handled it well in a top class well....im so happy for this guy
This woman is incredibly rude. I don't understand what her problem is. Noah has done a great deal to get rid of any prejudice, especially regarding race. She can't be more mistaken.
It s called Hard Talk for a reason and I think he was well prepared cause he did good
And she cuts in all the time..when he's talking.
What is her problem?
kcelestinomaria oh well, we now hate this bbc hardtalk .... trash tv in my opinion
Hard talk, he is always interrupted when giving his views. Better name this show can't hardly talk 😂 but Trevor was so smart, calm and collected.
My Mom was dark chocolate, my dad was white chocolate and I am milk chocolate :) :) :) thank you Trevor.
SiyaM Ma Me too! My dad (dark chocolate) thinks it is hilarious.
Trevor...... I can't tell you how pleased I was with your " chocolate" analogy, because I, too, have used it. Ahh, if only.....how much more peace and happiness if more people could see it that way. BTW.... I AM a chocoholic....lol. oh, and also....not that it's very important.... I am a 75 year old white women. Love you and your show. Just finished watching the OPRAH interview when I happened upon this one. From OPRAH to this woman..... talk about unpleasant. I truly felt sad for her.

Buddy Odell I don't know what you are on about. We South Africans know our similarities and our differences with the African Americans. Difference does not refer to colour between but it is about our behaviour, customs and rituals. African Americans originate from Africa but would not be able to relate to these customs and rituals therefore it is true that they are not Africans so what's your problem?
Buddy Odell just how do you know where I have lived and travelled? Because I am African you have assumed that I have never been to America in capital letters wow!!! Lastly we all know that AA are our descends; that does not mean you know about us. Yes I agree with Noah that we are different. May be you need to live in Africa for a while but don't go and live in a city but go for the villages then you will know. All the other things you wrote I wont bother over; they are about you.
Buddy Odell You know what, YOU CAN WRITE AS MANY ESSAYS AS U LIKE AND PRETEND YOU KNOW ME AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE; THE FACT IS YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS IGNORANT about us AND ARE DOING WHAT PEOPLE WHO THINK AFRICANS ARE STUPID DO I.E. TO FORCE US TO ABANDON WHAT WE THINK AND KNOW OF OURSELVES TO SUIT YOU LITTLE STUDIES WHICH BY THE WAY I DID NOT READ. I AM NOT YOUR STUDY. I KNOW WHO I AM. CONTINUE WRITING IT DOES NOT CHANGE THE FACT THAT WE ARE NOT THE SAME. THE FACT THAT WE ARE HAVING THIS EXCHANGE IS PROOF OF THAT. GO AND COMMUNICATE WITH THOSE YOU HAVE DEEMED TO BE INTELLIGENT ENOUGH. YOU ARE SO COCK SURE ABOUT NOTHING. YOU DO NOT KNOW ME BUT YOU INSIST ON TELLING ME ABOUT MY LIFE. I DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE BUT YOU HAVE SAID SO MANY RACIST THINGS; THIS CONVERSATION WITH YOU IS FINISHED. GO AND FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO PRACTICE LECTURING TO. HOW DO U KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT ME? YOU ARE A VINDICTIVE FOOL AND DON'T BOTHER TO WASTE YOUR WORDS AND REPLY ME I WILL NOT WASTE MY TIME READING YOUR STUFF. YOU ARE NO DIFFERENT FROM WHITES WHO SAY THEY ARE NOT RACIST BECAUSE THEY HAVE AFRICAN FRIENDS AND EAT THEIR FOOD.
He is south African we know how to handle such 😂😂😂😂😏👑👑👑
My white chocolate ninja brother call me black Chocolate ninja lol. I actually think of it as a compliment.
She got upset because she couldn't rattle him. Good job Trevor!
With all due respect, every one is different. Just because both Trevor and other dude have same skin color doesn't mean they have to think the same way. All white black, brown must behave and think the same by your logic then.
Secondly, wait and hear the answers for your hard hitting questions. You can't prepare your questions and try to make your guests uncomfortable but not have the respect to hear their reason and answers.
Trevor Noah grew up in a mixed race family during apartheid South Africa. I think he understands racism pretty well. What makes his comedy special is how he uses that experience to break down barriers and encourage people to connect with each other across racial 'boundaries', through the medium of shared laughter. It's because he "goes there" that we're able to bring to light these deep, difficult and painful issues in a slightly more accessible (if not always comfortable) way. I think he should be celebrated for this, not vilified by a low-grade reporter looking to score cheap talking points. (full disclosure: proud South African here!)
Zeinab was needlessly combative and Trevor's critical reasoning abilities significantly overshadowed her half-baked arguments.
She is confused politician with comedian. Trevor Noah is astonishingly calm.
I know right!
“You could be doing anything if you’re not doing the opposite.” 😂😂😂
She came into this interview with the sole purpose of this question. She wanted to embarrass him but it didn’t work. He’s smarter and more thoughtful so he left her looking stupid. Nice work Trevor. This is what happens when you try to argue with your emotions vs. logic.
She was brutal.. there is no listening to anything he is saying. Just pushing through the conversation to make a point. The level of patience and respect given by Trevor here is truly impressive. He had every right to walk out of the interview.
Typical of British reporters with an agenda.

After this interview an advertisement played and it blew me up with laughter because it was dairy milk. 🍫

Lenny Henry is old enough to be Trevors dad, so his life experiences as an afrocarribean man would be very different to Trevors as a biracial man raised in South Africa.
Does she work for Fox News in England. Dam. Good job Trevor. Definition of class.
garry weinberg this interview show is unbelievably brutal to pretty much every guest, with a few exceptions. The one that comes on the BBC Radio here in the states is even more so. The guys name is Steven Sachur I believe, and he does not fuck around.

Scrutinize: To examine or inspect closely and thoroughly. Now when you have a person is incapable of listening with an agenda doing the scrutinizing...this is what it looks like. Very hard to watch.
Trevor's IQ and Ego truly shines here are as he does not react to her nonsense.
Noticing differences isn't something bad. Thank you, Trevor!
Is this lady interviewing Trevor Noah, or herself? To me, she seems more interested in getting her own viewpoints out, than to hear Trevor's.

"No conversation is complete without context, bravo dear Trevor Noah. You nailed it💪
Never heard of any one ever being offended by being compared to something that is universally loved. This interviewer is trying to stir up outrage for the sake of having something to be outraged about. If a man compared my eyes or skin to chocolate (and they have), it would be flattering. They’re comparing me to something that is beloved by almost every person on Earth and widely considered a delicacy in many places. Nothing offensive in that. That’s like being upset by someone saying “You’re as sweet as pie!”. It’s… a compliment. And, Trevor’s way of simplifying skin colors onto shades of chocolate is philosophically beautiful. It really makes us all think about the fact that at the end of the day, we’re all still the same underneath - regardless of our appearance or “flavor”!
Trevor the depth of your thinking guided the interviewer to become more thoughtful and it became an actual conversation in the end. She wanted to frame the issue in easy boxes for media/audience consumption. You did not allow this.

He is super intelligent to be able to do all that in one interview
The interviewer should get an Olympic gold medal for moving the goal posts.
Trevor level of patience during this conversation is what I aspire for.
She had a shaped opinion of him before she interviewed him. This makes her seem very unprofessional and incapable of being objective. I think her panties are too tight. If she thinks she can pick Trevor a part, she's got him mistaken. He will school her every time.

littlemisssunshi9555 unfortunately the objective of many reporters; flawed views spread through funded programming.
She has issues.
Trevor called this woman a mad person (04:03) and it flew right over her head.
On the African American thing, as someone from 1 country in the CONTINENT OF AFRICA I can say African Americans are not African, not because of their skin color but because of the environment they grew up in.
Even in Africa, we are different from country to country and from tribe to tribe, but we live similar live experiences specific to Africa making us African. That is not the case for people living in America which is the normal thing, it is not an insult.
In reference to this particular clip, this lady is not a very good interviewer. She asks a question and does not seem to try to listen to the answer with an open mind. She interrupted Mr. Noah several times and seemed argumentative. It seems that she gave her opinion and expected him to just agree with her. Perhaps she did not expect him to be so intelligent and knowledgeable. Maybe she assumed that comedians were just clowns. Think again lady. Mr. Noah is not only funny, but also intelligent and honest. I wonder what would happen if she got into a conversation with his mother. Hmmm...
Little Joe agree.
Little Joe no she's good. She's just doing her job

He is very smart.. she came to tackle him but she didn’t see his intelligent responses coming
"You could be doing anything if you're not doing the opposite" -- That one was the best response for me
this woman, whoever she is, was trying too hard to be a cut throat journalist with no success, Trevor handled this very well.
Could she please let him finish! Daaaamn lady.
Yes this systemic interrupting is maddening!
Looking at her, I would have chosen a different "journalist".. the man is a comic. I am happy he can defend his point. He made me keep watch because he has context. I congratulate his mother for the way she raised him Be u..for u!!!
She's bogus
She was extremely annoying and defensive and rude. But it was an interesting conversation about racial classification. Trevor's mind and thought process is amazing. He must have a very high IQ.
I disagree. I think she was on point with her assessment and questions. She's an educated woman and certainly older than Trevor with life experiences too I suppose. She was asking questions with concerns I have and are curious about. I think he handled himself well. He brought something she could probably understand to the conversation and I'm hoping he left with a better understanding of the issues as well. I loved the interview. 😊 Is there a continuation of it on another clip somewhere?
SHE APPROACHED HIM IN A VERY PATRONIZING AND CONDECENDING WAY. HE WAS LIGHT YEARS AHEAD OF HER IN ITELLIGENCE AND WIT. HE MADE HER LOOK INCOMPETENT AND WITHOUT MERIT. BRAVO!!!
Trevor's like "I can see through your facade, like a fallen angel standing in the presence of God" 🤣 thatha MTrevana
I’m black. I was born in America as my father and his father before him.
She does not speak for me. She speaks for no one I know.
Her controversy belongs to her and her alone.
Yes, I thought it was hilarious seeing this BRITISH women get her feathers ruffled so much over how upset Trevor Noah is making all the African American's. 🤪
She sounds stupid how did she get job
Senica S I don’t know what African Americans she’s talking about but she certainly does NOT speak for me. She’s seems like a very bitter person and is completely ignorant of the background of the issues to which she THINKS she speaks.
@@senicanastasia took the words outta ma mouth.
Your research team should be fired. They missed the context of every joke Trevor made.
Lol so true it's like pulling teeth with this woman.
And that they were jokes, not statements 😂
I'm annoyed on Trevor's behalf yerrr
When Trevor first cam to America he was an Alpha & his stand up was amazing. For a short period during the Trump era Trevor became a woke liberal. Now his African Alpha side is back.
P.S: This heffer reminds me of Cathay Newman.
Can’t believe the BBC employs journalists of this quality - appalling
Well done Trevor ..... U make me proud to be A South African
