Over 40 and Still Don't Know C.A.G.E.D? (DO THIS!)

- A recent video that I did sparked someone to comment that if you're over the age of 40 and you still have not yet learned about the "C.A.G.E.D. Guitar Method," you really need to study it and learn how it works so that your knowledge of the neck can further expand.
For those of you who are not sure what this guitar method actually is, the "CAGED Method," is a path to learning an octave pattern system based off of the root designed octaves of; "C, A, G, E and D," chords found in the open position of the guitar neck.
Some would have you believe that seeing any kind of progress when it comes to learning the guitar after a certain age will be dependent upon resorting to methods like C.A.G.E.D. as a shortcut to more comprehensive development of the fingerboard.
While that is simply not true, this system can still be another learning option that is certainly helpful when it comes to understanding more about how the guitar neck operates for; note names, scales, chords and intervals.

What does age have to do with it?
I’m so glad I caught this video just in time! I turn 40 tomorrow.
40 and over only buddy
Hahahahaha 😂
Your already 40!
Lmfao lol
LOL!!!! I didn't start guitar until I was in my early 50s and had played keyboard for 6 or 7 years. I have now sang and played guitar in about 220 open mics and also played at restaurants and wineries opening for friends. Who made up the 40 year old rule, a 10 year old? Just get a guitar, a good teacher and start working no matter what your age is, 8 to 80!
Bought a guitar in late April, purchased a well-known guitar method book, have been learning the notes of the fret, know many chords, am working on barred chords. Practice everyday, faithfully. Practice, practice, practice. This video is a great help. I’m about to turn 61!
Which book?
Good for you dude
Thank You so much . Reminding me 43 years ago when i was 10 . The guys in my village show me all the basic chords in the first 3 bars . Since then I myself learning all the CAGED chords across the fretboard. Now I am still playing guitar and singing everyday . Your video is great to me. Thanks
I don't get it, this video is about octaves, not about CAGED.
Always wanted to go to GIT when I was a kid. My neighbor went for a summer, and when he came back he was teaching all of us some of the tricks he learned.
I'm over 50, so this video was a bit tough to see properly, until I adjusted my UHF antennas.
That said, this is a great lesson on how to best grok the neck and its layout. I know the notes, but this highlights the relationships and nicely maps the intervals. This is exactly what I was looking for.
Been playing 50 years . Saw stuff I had no idea of thanks
Your theory and practical instructions are great and easy to follow. My interest with guitar playing has been in and out and now that I’m retired I’m giving it another try.
I am 50+ and you helped me a lot, Sir! Finally and after so many years i got it! Thank you so much!
I’m not sure this is the cage , this is more like where the octaves are , the concept of the cage is to say start on a C chord now play using the A shape , then G shape & E &D spelling out caged , and each shape change starts off from the previous chord shape
I am well over 40, at 65 i am still trying to learn how to play.
Excellent video for new players that are trying to move beyond learning single basic chords.
How is your learning going? I'm a year younger and am thinking of buying Wasson's course. This guy seems very good but I don't know enough to make an informed opinion.
@@jlevan1996 If you want to take a course from the ground up and don't mind the little bit of dedication involved, then do Andrew's course. I can tell you that it is not random. I was a member at Guitar Tricks and started their Beginner course. First lesson was good, second was making sense, third lesson was totally unrelated as was all further lessons. So, I quit and joined at Creative Guitar. Andrew's system is a real course that he's used with real human beings at his studio, so it's logical and makes sense.
@@jippie11261 Thanks!
@@jippie11261 Thanks for your recommendation of Andrews course, i made the mistake of showing interest in Guitar Tricks, they keep emailing me snipets of their course, but i got the impression that all they wanted was your money.
I have tried a few beginners courses, only to find that even learning a few basic cords is not easy, some don't show you how or where to place your fingers, i need to start again, and learn how to play from scratch.
I’ve watched tons of videos about this system and for some reason my brain finally clicked while watching yours! Don’t know how you did it but I’m glad you did. Thanks!!
I'm 38, should I wait a couple years?
I thought the same thing lol 😂
At least ten...........
😂😂😂😂
If you're still here in two years. Stay safe. It's a very crazy world right now. Oh, and...I'm twice your age, and I learned about the CAGED system when I was over 40. But, I didn't start learning to play the guitar until I was 65 after i retired. Keep rocking!! :)
BlackPhillip 😀😆
I hit 40 almost 15 years ago! Still don't feel a day over 30 but yeah this helped. 👌 thank you ✌️
I am blown away at the explanation of C alone! Makes total sense. Leave it to someone from GIT to explain this in a way I can understand. Thank you!
Me: *An intermediate guitar player under 30*
Still finds any and all music theory outside of the basics to be like rocket science and just fucks around making little progress
thank you for taking the time to make this video..very helpful
You're very welcome!
Nice tutorial.im 60 and happy to have addtl knowledge in guitar playing.thnx bro
I'm going to start here. Thanks.
This is a wonderful lesson for any beginner. Book looks like a great tool as well for learning 😊
Wow...nice "full" guitar sound...gr8 lesson too.👍🤘🤘
Legend. Really appreciate this.
This is actually something pretty cool to build up your musical style.
Thank you Andrew, great lesson, great teacher.
I am 56 and I am still trying to get a hold on my Guitar. Thanks🙏🙇 for the upload. God bless🙏
This is simple but very effective, awesome 💖
Wonderful explanation!
Following you from Mozambique! Thank you a lot!
A down to earth no frills approach to learning guitar. Excellent explanations for courses along with a little theory to go along with it.
Creative Guitar Studio for me, seem to blend in the theory with lessons and inspires one to want more. Well, at least for me in my humble opinion.
Thanks for sharing this video. 📼
I’m a noob in my 50’s. This helped me! Thank you.
Hi. Your good at this. I like the way you show the cords on the neck and also so it in a box in the video, im a beginner at playing the guitar. So keep it up. When I get some money I want to donate and get one of your books 📚. Thank you sir. Each time you put a video out ill be looking at it. You teach very well 👏 👌 👍
Awesome tutorial! You nailed it
Thank you sir for taking such a wonderful class 😘
Great lesson! I hadn’t seen the notes as part of the CAGED system before. Thanks
get to learn the root notes and corresponding location acroos the fretboard, seems easy, now play!
This is spectacular. Very nice.
Excellent unique way of doing your teaching, simple basic and easier to understand.
So let me make things clear in the debate on passing 40. Hey I am 68 and the thing is that I am a multimusician and when I don’t practice drums (both electronic and acoustic) or practice keyboard or etudes on my classic flute. ( when I was 20 I travelled around Europe as a street musician.) Then, I for sure also get a lot of fun learning more on guitar and base. If you might, for example have seen Paul McCartney 78, you might also have had another point of view about age. And to learn, is the most beautiful things in life, and it is something you can do long as you live. The result is not important, it is that you try to do your best and enjoy it that is the meaning. The guys that become masters are there to inspire us. ❤️🎶 Today I will spend most of the time with Logic in my home studio!🎧🎶
Thanks. Great tute.
Enjoyed every information.
I'm 52, get my guitar and started to learn, Thanks a lot!!!!!
Watching today November 24, 2022
I have been playing o 50 years but this explanation is the best I have ever seen!
Whoa !! I’ve watch a ton of guitar lessons from all over the internet for a few years now , not making much progress due to horrible practice regime . That aside I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve heard of and notice the octaves in the C shape !! Only 3 mins into this video , am already glad I clicked the notification hehe .
Thanks loads, Andy. Excellent presentation.
I'm going to attempt to send you some money 💰 because you are a true teacher Andrew! Stay Awesome' Dean.
Thank you for such a kind offer along with such kind words in your comment. Our donation page is... www.creativeguitarstudio.com/donations
Fantastic video
Well I’m over 40, but I’ve been playing almost 40 years now too. So for me, it was very tedious, and I had to keep fast forwarding as I was hoping to find some new breakthrough. When I should know by now, there really isn’t any new breakthroughs to learning the neck, ha ha.
Anyway, maybe the title should be, “intermediate guitar players of all ages.” As I didn’t find this much different than other ways of memorizing the neck that I learned back in the 80s. But it sounds like some people here learned some things, so that is great! 👍🏻🎸
I owe you this lesson. Thank you
I'm a vampire (roughly 426 years old), and I just started playing guitar, this is super useful as an old person!
Thank you. Very good teaching!!!
BRO THNK FOR THE LESSON GOD BLESS YOU BROTHER
Almost 70 been playing since was 9 years old must say if had this clarity back in the day I'd say time I hit 20 years old definitely been a better guitarist. Don't say this very often but what a gt illustration!! BRAVO👏🎸
Hi
So easy ,so wonderful , so good to understand. I really admire you guy. Keep it up .O GOD BLESS.🙏🏆
Hi, Andrew. I’m from Brazil. A “young” student, but 60 years old. Kkk. And I can tell you that you’re such an incredible teacher. Thank you so much for your lessons. Here we go!
Careful , the CAGED system does what it’s called ..it’ll get you stuck in a box or cage ..
best learn also what each notes effect is 9th, 6th 3rd etc ..... and get out of that cage fast
Brilliant love it so good
Great job. Thank you sir.
Hi Andy. What a great instructor you are. Just made a donation to your site. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to the handout collection too. Thanks
Thank you
So
Beautiful
Your patient instruction
Most helpful explanation and with a bit of effort it seems to expand one's understanding and confidence for individuals like me who are still trying to learn more about playing the guitar at age 64.5
Hi Andrew, the caged looks like a good spot to improve as a mediocre player that has self taught and missed important building blocks of guitar. You have really great clean, concise and exacting fretboard fingering and your effects sounds I want to learn too... I'm a Saxophonist by trade but attempted guitar most of of my life. I'm 58 now. I have jumped around through lessons, missing important building blocks in the journey and have not memorized the fretboard either. I can figure out the notes but not nano second speed needed as my Sax fingerings are automatic. Also, I'm noticing knowing the notes of chords is the only way to understand building triads etc. After 40 learning is definitely not easy. Sax was a piece of cake starting at 12 years old. I'm wondering where should a student like me start to improve Guitar ? Thanks from Gmanjazz, Stuck on a middle pleateu somewhere in guitarland.
Great exercise
My favourite teacher, thanks for your lessons.
You are such an amazing instructor.
Very helpful
That's cool Andrew.
I’ve had a poster of this hanging in my studio, now I’m going to use it, thanks for sharing your beautiful work!
Excellent video
Yep 65 as well and I don't read or know anything about music but been playing for 52 years that's what ears are for ,but great for people just learning but my tip listen to as much music as you can , cheers
Handy lesson, thanks mate!
I’m still trying to figure out what age has to do with this.
Its click bait title, it got us here, Haha so it worked, pretty good lesson.
It's not an entirely valid title/headline, but it makes sense for some of us. In my case, i started playing when i was about 12, but was always intimidated by lead work. It both 'hurt my fingers' as a kid, and i just didn't have confidence in ability to learn it. I stuck with just learning the main riffs and rhythm stuff, even from Van Halen and 80s metal-but not soloing. Skip ahead 30-40 years, and i was just as intimidated by lead, but since i hit 40, there's an age (+lack of sleep) factor that diminishes my memory. So, there's that. Of course, you can start learning when you're 40 and not have this as an obstacle, but i kinda feel like it's less of an obstacle if you learn it while you're younger, and don't let too much time pass for it to build up as some 'insurmountable' feat in your mind.
I am not over 40, but I am pretty close, and I get what he means. Some of us that are older can make use of a more condensed version of something. Time might be more limited, and many find as they get older that learning new things doesn't come as easy. I know I am one of those people, and I found this video very helpful. If you don't feel that way as you get older, well I am happy for you.
If you are over 45 you can’t do this. :)
Ahhh you young whippersnappers always trying to figure stuff out ....
I’ll explain it later , it’s time for my nap ..
Great lesson! Thanks!
This is a very underrated channel!
Excellent 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I started playing guitar before CZcams was a thing and played this thinking I was just screwing around... little did I know that I was actually doing something
Great video man
Thx a lot for this very clear and interesting video 👍
BS"D
Very clear! Thank you!
I love your easy step guitar chord lessons. 👍👍
Nicely presented, I thought.
Excellent...
Thank you! Cheers!
Good stuff! 👍
Very interesting.
so, look at the chart at 12:15, do the practice in the intro (and at 12:35) which marches you up the fretboard doing CAGED for C (and eventually all keys)... every day...
great idea! thanks!
Great video.
If only this method was introduced to me 25 years ago. Thank you Andrew. Great lesson, great teacher.
I am 60 been playing since I was eight and never learned the CAGED method learning the keyboard I have learned th keyboard from scales calling out each note,I have been considering taking lesson havent bern feeling so well lately and having financial issues as well hoping this changes but I di watch many if your video thanks
Hope you feel better mate 😉
Your tone is AMAZING .. what size strings do you use?
Thank you
I am above 50 it is very useful. Explain very nicely.I want to learn Guitar. My greatest desire
Thanks Sir..
great thank you
This is just for me 😁
This Great! Helped me really understand for the first time. Thank you very much! I wish that I could afford your coarse. Fixed income prevents it.
What are you doing with the right hand? Strumming, just finger picking the two notes or what?
I'm 11 years late to the party on this one. But what i did notice is Harris from Iron maiden used this method alot on the album Number of the beast.
At 64.5 yo this was a helpful video but I will need to put more time in on it.
I'm not sure if I can play the guitar I've been trying to play Bach's toccata I can some of it but some of it seems impossible I am able to play Bach's bourree and I can play the second waltz some people that have heard me play say that I'm amazing but other people get very angry and it seems like I might have fight them
Interesting!
