As much as I do like a bit of modern day movie musicals, I prefer the old fashioned ones too or on stage. They just have refreshing quality that are still a bit resonant today.
What bothered me about this song and the "do re mi" song is, all the characters in the movie supposedly speak German, yet these songs have plays on English words.
Maria's high notes are astounding, but I simply adore that sigh of amazement and astonishment Georg lets slip when he witnesses her talent. My favorite part hands down! You can just tell how taken with her he's becoming, or possibly may already be.
Anna Bouchard Somewhere between 2-05 and 2-09 right when she finishes going really high and the kids are repeating after her. He lets out a sort of phew sound as she finishes.
When I took German in high school, we learned that "zeigen" is the verb "to show." But sometimes we got our vowels mixed up and said "ziegen" instead. The teacher said, "Nein, nein! 'Ziegen' means 'goats'."
THIS is why the movie is so much better than the stage musical. The song is not nearly as enjoyable without the dancing puppets. But how on earth did the marionetteers get the goat's tails to wag?
As an early childhood teacher, I believe that music do bring out the best leaning ability, competency and talents of children and even adults. Music like such can really get everyone involved in and inspire them pursue excellence. Bravo! The best actress, music and movie!
A favorite song of mine from one of the greatest movies of all times. The Sound of Music is on the top 3 of my sentimental favorites-- my other two are Mary Poppins, and The Wizard of Oz. I cant help turning up the sound and singing along with this song; its happy and makes me feel good. Julie Andrews had such a beautiful voice. Those high notes? Wow! 😃
You've never seen Snow White, Pinocchio, Bambi, Dumbo, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians etc?
One of my top favorite songs from the movie. Julie Andrews had such a spectacular voice. Those were the days when people actually had to have TALENT in order to be a famous celebrity.
Only can be found once in a blue moon. But I intend to make the best of how Hollywood has changed in recent times. But art like this will live on everywhere we look.

Watching this when I grew up I could see why everyone feel in love with Julie Andrews as Maria, she's gorgeous and a voice to match. This is one of my favorite scenes and I love the Sound of Music. It's by far one of the biggest contributors to my love of music and my connection with music. I love it couldn't praise it more if I tried.

The puppets are the mark of great craftsmanship, no electronics, just good old string and skill
I wonder what happened to the puppets from this movie? In a museum somewhere, I hope!

Huh?
I get chills when I hear Julia Andrews voice. Ugh man. The talent. Its so gorgeous.

Mandy Nelson I know right!
1:58 to 2:08 is my favorite part. Her duet with the kids is so pretty!!

I was just going to comment this but I see I'm not the only one who loves that part. Brought a tear to my eye listening to it after so long :)
i love it too

There will never never be a musical like this ever again
Kirk Lonnquist so true. All the musicals now are horrible . My kids are teenagers and they love the old musicals.
As much as I do like a bit of modern day movie musicals, I prefer the old fashioned ones too or on stage. They just have refreshing quality that are still a bit resonant today.
Brenda JOAN De Costa wicked is pretty good,
Austin Persing Wicked and High School Musical were how I got into theatre as a teenager.
You're sure right here!
This is the greatest musical movie ever ever made. Each song, each ode is absolutely stunning. Truly a masterpiece.
And certainly deserving of its Best Picture Oscar win.
Watch "The King and I" also great.
This is the only musical that I legitimately like
Mary Poppins though...
What bothered me about this song and the "do re mi" song is, all the characters in the movie supposedly speak German, yet these songs have plays on English words.

Kalah Dolman d
Kalah Dolman pretty sure she's the one who made a phew sound
she did
I think that when Julie was around 12 years old, she sang for the Queen of England. She was already a great talent.
When I took German in high school, we learned that "zeigen" is the verb "to show." But sometimes we got our vowels mixed up and said "ziegen" instead. The teacher said, "Nein, nein! 'Ziegen' means 'goats'."
Correct . Just a little vowel and it’s another word altogether . Dutch is much closer to English than German is .

String attached to pinky.

Possibly pinched a string with their fingers and twitched up and down gently.
Obviously those damn kids where just really skilled puppeteers. at 1:58 you can see how everyone is paying attention.

I loved this scene when I was a child! Also probably the funniest scenes in my opinon
Not sure why this song popped into my head today…. but I guess that’s proof enough. It is absolutely timeless.
Timeless is one of the most glorious words in the English language
Honestly this was the best part of the whole movie.
Vivienne Gucwa this was in the movie ?
+Lps Pineapple This is literally a scene from the movie

My personal favorite was when this line was spoken

My father was German (God Bless him) and since I was little we watched this movie every Christmas and I love the festiveness of this!
Lucky you! Especially how Germany has changed since World War 2. I make this movie semi holiday traditional
2018 and I still think about this scene and how much I loved it. Julie Andrews was a queen and still is one, I love her to death!!!❤️❤️❤️

We are lucky enough to have the actual marionettes used for this in the art museum in Mason City Iowa! The man who created them is a native!

Bryan Matheny 257 dislikes. I dislike 257 people now, have to do 257 good deeds
I love how Hammerstein included all those words that rhymed with "goatherd"!
He sure knew how to write playfully clever lyrics.
I honestly cant think of anyone with a more light and gorgeous voice... She's awesome!!! And do are those kids, too much talent for one video lol!
This makes me so happy
As a kid, this was always my favorite song and scene in the whole movie.
words cannot describe i love this. oldest movie i can remember watching.

Julie Andrews' voice! My Gosh!
One of my top favorite songs from the movie. Julie Andrews had such a spectacular voice. Those were the days when people actually had to have TALENT in order to be a famous celebrity.
This was the time when movies had class ,this is such an example that movies can be made so goood and so classy without vulgarity indeed!
S#cial EnteRtainment I know I was just thinking are movies like this made anymore?? The artistry is largely gone from filmmaking. It’s sad

This is my husband’s FAVORITE song! He wants me to sing him this whenever he is sick!
The puppets were pretty creative for it's time! Gotta love this scene. Also, Happy belated 50th anniversary to the Sound of Music
This was my favorite part of the movie as a kid, and I still enjoy it to this day.
Me too
Ugh Christopher Plummer was so attractive in this movie.
Yellow4494 He is gorgeous!!!!!
I think he's most attractive when he's the cold detached widower father 😂
This was a precious moment in time to which we will never again experience. Wonderful memories;)

The Sound of Music is a great movie.
I love how much expression she gives to the different characters as in, boy goat, girl goat and mama goat. So funny and incredibly talented! 2:18
