I love how this scene is basically Skyler saying “you are not some hardened criminal Walt!” And Walt saying “lol yes I am “
And then Walter was like “I really went that far” when he regularly goes that far.
This was the first time he went that far against his own family though
He's also bluffing here. Skyler is scared of outside threats, and so is Walt. But he doesn't want her to be scared of outside threats so he exaggerates how dangerous he is. Unfortunately, while she isn't as scared of outside threats now, she's more scared of him.
"Nanomachines, Skyler. They harden in response to tough days at the office."
@@thechristianarchist662 don’t forget his ego
Love how Walter just explained what Jesse did to Gale.
Exactly, he literally admitted to murder here & yet there were no repercussions for him! I thought Skylar would report it, but she didn't. I guess she was thinking that he was exaggerating & didn't believe that he would ever be capable of murder.
And Jesse is LITERALLY the one who knocks.
There's probably some deeper meaning to that that I'm too lazy to figure out.
end of the season, he knocks the lab door indeed.

Sir did you come over from pitch meeting channel?
Great bit of costume design having him take off the red shirt to the dark red shirt to visually show him turning into Heisenberg
The red shirt showed us in the previous scene, that he puts himself in danger. Now, he's in control.
In the previous episode, when they're all sitting at dinner and Walt tells Hank that the real meth genius is probably still out there -- he's not only wearing the bright red shirt but they're drinking very vibrant red wine. Not a normal color of red wine which is more purple, but bright blood red. It shows that Walt is not only putting himself in danger, but the wine is further putting him in danger by loosening his tongue around Hank.
it would have been better if he put on a puffy pirate shirt, to show hes a puffy pirate
@@jakesli9154 He's not THAT dangerous

It seems like Malcolm's dad really lost it after the divorce. :(
Lois would never divorce Hal and vice versa. Lois likely had a meltdown, ended up in prison, and got shanked.
Hal really took a dark turn after dewey cleaned up the dominos
Nah, you're all wrong. Breaking Bad was nothing more than a dream of Hal's.
@GuardianKyle or was Malcolm in the middle the dream since it happened first? Then Walt woke up & this is the real him.
😂
havent watched the show but "a guy opens his dooor and gets shot, and you think that of me? No, i am the one who knocks" is an insane line. i cant imagine how it feels watching his character progress to this point
Trust me... watch it
You should really watch it.
Exactly. As insane of a line as it is, it weighs 1000x more, when you get to this point in the show, after watching it from the beginning.
Fine, I'll watch the show. Only because Colaws is funny
Haven't watched the show? That's almost a crime
This speech is music. For a short glimpse Skylar was able to peek a look on heisenberg.
Literally, there's a song named "Knock Knock" if I'm not wrong that uses these lines at the drop

That Brian is awesome! Did u ever think the Malcom in the Middle dad could be the one who knocks?😮
That facial expression at the end was amazing, he’s even scared of what he himself has become
No he's not, Throughout the show Walter rarely sees himself as an immoral/evil man and constantly justifies his actions by convincing himself they are for righteous reasons. He has a hero complex.
@@stairwaytoheaven8You can clearly see the shock on his face after he says that
@@jabba2126 almost like his old self isn't in control anymore. Walter was listening to Heisenburg talk.
This is the moment he became a door salesman.
And yet another example of why this is,by far, the best show there ever was, or ever will be.....
The Wire was better (mostly because 5b was a disappointment to me), but definitely the 2nd greatest show ever.
I’m sorry but The Sopranos exists
never speak for the future, or other's opinions.
Second best show. Sopranos has it beat
I prefer Better Call Saul.
I think the real "danger" in the subtext of this scene is that so many around Walt underestimated him. I feel like the real point of the change is that he's always had this inside of him. He's always had tremendous capabilities, but he felt that nobody close to him recognized it. And because nobody recognized it, Heisenberg became a full-time mask until it wasn't a mask at all.
Heisenberg is the real person; consumed by ambition and the need to 'win', not Walt. If you recall, the thing that pissed off Walt the most about having all the money in season 2 is that nobody knew that HE was the one who'd earned that money and figured out a way.
The danger is in someone obviously brilliant searching for external validation... and constantly being invalidated by the people closest to him. He is loved but never validated... the lack of validation means everyone underestimates him, and thats why he is "the danger".
I mean it's like that thing andrew tate said, a man needs to be respected

@@SkyForceOne2 I'm mocking his emotional state, he's obviously very intelligent.
0:53 I like how even Walter was lost for words after that. Like he was probably thinking "That was so cool, I shouldn't follow it up with anything"
to me he looks like he's scared of what he has become and that's the point he realized it
He is scared of himself and He know he's a monster. Thats what you are seeing in this part
He always knew what he was he just realised he showed his true self to his wife and theirs no coming back from that
To think that this same guy was the dad from Malcolm in the middle is astounding, his acting quality in both that and breaking bad are both top tier but you would never expect to look for it in a show like Malcolm in the middle
I still think of him as the dentist from Seinfeld 😂
For real. Don't under-estimate the comedic actors. They are trained to lean heavily on emotion and reactions which can make them phenomenal in a drama.
I will tell you another great comparison of acting skills is John Lithgow in 3rd Rock From the Son and Pet Semetary. Lithgow isn't a crazy drug dealer/killer but the range of acting is a lot alike. Bryan Cranston & John Lithgow are definitely 2 of the most underrated actors going today. Would love to see them 2 together in some serious role.
Literally, even with my absolute breaking bad brain rot my brain NEVER processes that they're the same actor
@EliteSavageKing if it's the guy I'm thinking of, wasn't he the trinity killer in Dexter tho?
Seeing this air on AMC was nuts, we were all freaking out. Good times.
The best scene of the entire series imho. It defined what Walt had become and was the moment Skyler removed her blinders and finally realized it.
crawl space laugh for me
Bro went from Malcom in the middle to this , this man’s versatility is crazy
The writing in this scene is some of the best we have ever seen in television
A similar scene would be Saul refusing Howard's job offer. *LIGHTNING BOLTS SHOOT FROM MY FINGERTIPS!*
Did not make this connection, bravo
Yes, this is a common trait of narcissists. At a moment when most would be humbled by a reality that they're mere mortals like everyone else, they double down on their own delusions of grandeur. It's too mortifying to believe they're nothing special - they'd probably get suicidal.
I'm watching better call saul for the first time. I'm revisiting this scene rn bc I just watched Saul's meltdown and it reminded me of this LOL
Yeah saul is so lame. Trying to be a sith lord when he is more like a jedi Knight.

My favorite detail is how Walt seems surprised by his own words at the very end. Almost as though he's not sure if this thing inside of him has more to say or if it has somewhere else to take him.
I feel like this scene encapsulates the entire theme of the show.
It's not a good guy turns bad, it's a bad guy coming into his own.
This is the best interpretation of BB in one line😂
They BOTH have strong performances. You can see the fear building in Skylar as he crescendos into the famous lines at the end. Well done both.
Equal credits to Skyler too for giving such a realistic reaction to what she just heard. Top notch acting!
Nah not equal tf Bryan Cranston acted his heart out by showing emotion and speaking all she did was 😮
I agree its good acting, but Cranstons delivery so insanely amazing, it wouldn’t be so tough to react like that….top 5 dialogue delivery in TV history for me
Of course Bryan is incredible in this scene. But the fear, confusion and shock in Anna’s eyes is so good.
A lot of people disregard how good Anna's performances are, she really helps sell a lot of the Heisenberg scenes she's in
From my first time through, I also see that fear, confusion, and shock in Walt’s eyes in this scene. I never accepted that he’d fully broke bad by this point - he fumbled through, relying on wits and blind luck to get to this point. No, I see him using this speech to silence her doubts and commit to himself even though it’s thin and hollow. His look of trailing off at the end betrays that to me. He’s still playing pretend until he’s not.

@@fossfox A lot of people think she was often in the wrong, so you can't always trust people's opinions.
This is the moment Heisenberg becomes the knocker guy
"I am the one who knocks!" - Walter said calmly.
I watch this after 4 hours of edging to build mental strength
rofl
he was edging before it was popular
For me this line is right up there with "Rosebud" and "Say What again".
no one talks about it but the little hand gesture and head tilt when he says “let me clue you in” feels like an absolute genius move from cranston. idk what it is but every time i see it it really hits me how great of an actor he is.
I love it too... it's those subtle gestures that convey he's not who she thinks he is anymore. He's tired of her thinking that and basically it's a show of not just confidence, but maniacal, absolute levels of confidence. Which gets taken further and further in the aftermath of the "magnet!" job and his smug look when Mike protests they went too far. It goes from this to believing he doesn't even need to worry. It reminds me of Lawrence of Arabia when he says, "Be silent, Ali, for I am invincible..." just before he's whipped and tortured by the Turkish Bey. That temporarily breaks him, but he reemerges as ruthless, calculating, and bloodthirsty for an Arab defeat against of the Turks.
I am the one who knocks!
The way that Walt says that can also be interpreted as him seeing things in terms of viewing ones life as a show. Which in Walt's case, he really tends to underestimate just how dangerous the life of a drug lord can be.
Bryan Cranston was already an actor I was aware of as a kid when I watched Malcolm but man did he explode with this show. His talent should never be understated.
The funny thing is that in context, this scene is just one big bluff.
At this point in the series, Walt was paranoid as hell and was convinced that every corner he turned would have a hired gunman from Gus.
He wasn't wrong though, considering how Walt's rivalry with Gus ended
He knew he was going to the top
The change of shirt to Gus Fring colours, the extra growl in the voice. Absolute genius.
This is the moment that Walt -
Be right back, someone’s knocking at the door
So we all remember this speech off by heart
Best / most intense bit of dialogue I’ve ever seen in any tv series.
Never took the time to appreciate what happens to his face immediately after he says “I am the one who knocks”… like he’s almost appalled at himself and who he’s become, coupled with how far out of control his life is.
You know what I just noticed? After Walt told Skyler “I AM the one who knocks!”, Walt started to say something else. But then, Bryan Cranston wisely had Walt stop and leave the room. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who noticed this, but this is another prime example of how great a TV show Breaking Bad was. Classic. 👍👍
When his back is to her, it’s Walter
When he turns around, that is Heisenburg
Cranston was brilliant throughout, but skyler's reaction😮😮. This is what made this scene legendary, we can listen to the words walter just uttered , on her face like some inner echo or something.
Seeing this scene without context was my introduction to BB. Judging from this scene alone, I thought Walt at this point already had a Meth Empire and was actually in control. I thought this scene was in the last season already. Turns out, it's in the first half of season 4 and it's just Walt making himself seem like a bigger deal than he is.
Exactly
Give the guy an Oscar.
This is the moment skylar became heisenberg
One of the greatest scenes ever filmed. Damn fine job by both, but Cranston gets some credit here. He looks genuinely angry. Perfect line delivery. Even the enunciation on “knocks”. 10/10
This is truly the moment when Waltenberg became the Heisenwalt
At 31 years old now (first time I saw this I was a kid) after having seen it again, it clicked, his wife and almost everyone around him massively underestimated him maybe for his whole life. The way he lashes out is because after having accomplished so much as "Heisenberg" he still has to put up with being underestimated again
That scene still gives me shivers.
One of my favourite scenes!
Bryan Cranston acting is amazing

This is by far my fav scene of breaking bad. Absolute goosebumps. Bryan is a legend. I had hoped Walter would have gotten away and send he's family the cash he planned for them/ But alas it turned out differently
Symbolism:
When he removes his red (red symbolizing evil) shirt to reveal an even darker red shirt it symbolizes Walter's even further decent into the crime world and shows Skylar his true (evil) colors.
Just one of the many reasons I love this show.
more symbolism:
skylar is wearing white and blue. white often symbolizes purity and blue often symbolizes idealism
when walt and skyler are in the same frame together, you get red, white, and blue…. their disjointed union symbolizes the good, the bad, and the ugly of americanism and the american dream. the purity and idealism of our values, but also the evil and cold-heartedness that are often required to attain that dream

Great writing, and even greater acting, because what he said wasn't true. He not only was in danger, but his whole family was about to be under a terrible threat. So you notice his insecurity, his trembling lost eyes as soon as he stops talking, the hidden fear under the gangster bravata, because he knows he is lying, talking about the person he wanted to be all his life, not who he was. Middle age crisis, hubris and destructive pride all masterfully represented in one scene, and absolutely superb acting.

I loved it when Bryan Cranston said "It's knockin' time" and then knocks all over everyone.
As "evil" as Walter technically was and despite how many bad choices he made. I still hated Skyler more....
Hank and skylar are equally culpable in the creation of Heisenberg as Walt is, his whole life they emasculated him, underestimated him, thought he was a weak man.

I honestly don't know what the original intention of the script writers was, but Walter completely snapping was the right move.
This is the definitive moment that Walt tells Skylar that he is the danger.
I AM THE DANGER. I AM THE ONE WHO KNOCKS. Diminutive existence, under the boot, simply existing. Knowledge and potential unleashed. I find this empowering.
