I lifted this from Wikipedia. I think it points out the subtleties of understanding what was going on with the band at the time of this album. Prenter was eventually driven out of Freddie's circle, but 7 yrs is a long time of influence... Oddly, Brian wrote Dragon Attack which I always lump into the 'funk' category. There was so much more than we know happening all the time! Micheal Jackson said this album influenced his "Thriller" album. Too bad people get stuck in their expectations - this is great music!
"Disliking the new sound, Brian May and Roger Taylor were very critical of the influence that Paul Prenter, Freddie Mercury's personal manager between 1977 and 1984, had on the singer. Recalling the recording process in 2011, Taylor openly criticized the direction in which Prenter was taking Mercury (and thus the rest of the band),
stating that "[Prenter] wanted our music to sound like you'd just walked in a gay bar...and I didn't". May also noted that the making of the album in Munich took much longer than usual and that all of the band got
into "deep emotional trouble" in the city, blaming a mixture of drink, drugs and partying as the reason for the relatively lengthy recording sessions.[8] Prenter allegedly denied the other members access to Mercury."

Brian also wrote "Dancer" for the Hot Space album which is one of Queen's funkiest, most danceable tracks.
Roger was the one who introduced Queen to synthesizers. His very first solo track was (already several years before Hot Space) the funky "I wanna Testify", a cover from the funk & soul pioneers The Parliaments, written by George Clinton.
As you said, it was probably far more subtle than "Brian & Roger didn't like funk!" 😁😁

Hot space album wasn’t well received by fans at the time, the disco feel was brought on by the huge success of Another one bites the dust.
Roger & Brian weren’t happy about the change to disco and it took an age to get the album completed. Certainly the driving force towards this genre was Freddie & John.
Just before this song Freddie says: “Now, most of you know that we've got a, some new sounds out in the last week, and, ah, for what it's worth, um, we're gonna do a few songs in the ah funk/black category, whatever you call it. That doesn't mean we've lost our rock 'n' roll feel, OK? I mean, it's only a bloody record, people get so excited about these things, I mean um, we just wanna try out a few sounds, this is 'Staying Power'.

Hello disco! I look back on it fondly, but there has always been a love/hate thing going on with that genre of music here in the States. Even the Bee Gees sounded apologetic years after their massive success with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. The broader world of disco eventually lost some steam but dance music lived on in the different types of clubs. I don't know if there is a club mix of this song, but I can easily imagine it. Another One Bites the Dust had a long life on the dance floor. Fun reaction!! Freddie sounds awesome whatever he is singing. Looked like he was having fun with this one.

This is more proof that Queen was a democratic band. Half the band wanted to record some dance music, and the other half went along with it despite their reservations. Unfortunately Queen's fans were not quite ready to her this from them...it did not do well in the charts. Under Pressure was the only cut that got played much on the radio, especially because David Bowie was on it. The is another song on this album that I haven't heard anybody react to: Put Out The Fire. Even back then, I believe that the gun laws in the U.S. were shocking the world. This is a comment by Queen (written by Brian) about gun violence in the U.S. and to this day it is still totally relevant. I really appreciate your reactions and enjoy your attention to different elements within each song.

Great reaction! Thanks for reacting to this one, I am not sure anyone has reacted to this song. This is one kick ass performance. The band is tight, and Freddie was doing amazing vocals here. This is the one song where John is not playing bass, he was playing the rhythm guitar. Roger and Brian didn't like the direction they were going in, but they still took part in the album. I guess this is one of those internal fights, when the album were not as successful originally, they blamed Freddie. But they did actually contribute exactly half of the songs on this album.
Of course this is only my opinion, but they could have taken some responsibility as well. But the sales for the album has improved or caught up with their other albums over time.

Another great performance from the bowl is Back Chat czcams.com/video/eKBUBXowC58/video.html. It is a song that sounds very similar to Michael Jackson's Thriller material, but of course this was done before Thriller. There were a lot of in fighting between the band, apparently John wrote the song as a diss track towards Brian. Brian had to play a guitar solo on his own diss track. lol

Yes, Staying Power is from the 1982’s Hot Space, Roger absolutely hated the album and still does. Roger doesn't like disco and didn't really even like "Another One Bits the Dust" though he helped John (Deacon) put it together. Brian wasn't enthusiastic about doing the album either but the band was always up for experimenting. Actually., Freddie was disappointed with how the album turned out.
The horn arrangement was penned by Freddie Mercury and has a driving soul-rock atmosphere. The electro-disco was enhanced by Roger Taylor’s use of the Linn LM-1 drum machine, while Mercury provides the Oberheim synth. Brian May’s trusty Red Special is still in evidence, and John Deacon plays rhythm guitar rather than bass.

I think that at least some of the problem was when Hot Space was new, it must have seemed frightening to many fans (and to Brian and Roger), who had no way of knowing if this change of direction was permanent or just a diversion. Looking back at it from the distance of 40 years, as just part of the band's long and varied career, an avenue explored and moved on from, I imagine that the vitriol aimed at the album has reduced over time, especially from fans who weren't into the band until after the album had come and gone. Though Roger and Brian still don't seem to have mellowed towards it! ;) As for myself, the album was already ten years or more old before I heard it, and it somehow sounds better now than in the 90s. It's not the band's best album, but it's not a turkey either, and many of the songs are at least catchy. I have a minor obsession with 'Back Chat' myself, how that wasn't a big radio hit I don't know, maybe the band should have released it as the first proper single from the album instead of 'Body Language' and it might have done better than that did.

  • @lkamer1
    @lkamer1 Před 4 lety +6

Yes, Roger and Brian weren't as keen on it, but they are a band and they would never not participate. They had a rule in Queen that all had to eventually agree on something or they wouldn't do it so if Roger and Brian hadn't gotten on board, at least for the sake of the band then this album would not have been made like this. I'm sure Freddie and John had to do a lot of selling it to the others but they obviously did get their approval. There had been songs all through their careers that at least one member wasn't crazy about but they respected each other enough to do it anyway. To be fair to Brian and Roger, it wasn't one of their best selling albums. It is now, actually it is now one of their best selling albums. Roger and Brian just felt it wasn't the right direction to go at that time, where as Freddie and John, who liked to go to clubs and dance, thought it would be relevant. Anyway, the band never showed friction within the group to the outside, they kept all the bickering back and forth private as they should have and that is another reason they had such longevity and success. They always had each other's backs even through disagreements. Hot Space had several good songs on it. try out, Body Language, Calling All Girls, Back chat is a good one, it is said that john wrote it as a dis to Brian at the time but that has never been proven and i have never heard any of Queen say that. Another good one is Las Palabras De amor (The words of Love).

As someone suggested, can you, please, check "Dragon Attack", but studio version this time..I know you reacted to Montreal live version and although I love that one it was shortened and changed a bit (I do prefer their live performances except for this particular funky song with contagious John Deacon's bass..)
