Acoustic filters are not snake oil. They are used in the manufacturing of quite a few IEMs (usually universal fit). It's a cost effective way to "balance" the sound coming from multiple BAs, rather than go through the time consuming rigamarole of manufacturing and testing an OEM passive, time aligned crossover network for a particular design (R&D). Just use generic crossovers and the right filter (Knowles or Sensaphonics), job done! That being said, I had a situation where, while cleaning. I accidentally poked through one of my filters on a pair of Westone UM 2s. I heard that model, at the time, used Sensaphonic whites, flat response filters (which gently filter audio in the high mids) . Rather than go with it, I decided to do the same to the other side. What a difference! The high end opened up and the sound stage widened. I also found I ran my setup at a much quieter volume. Bass detail, well... became a lot more detailed! BTW... I am also a bass player who can proudly state " I haven't used a bass amp, live, in 5 yrs". IEMs rock!!!

Love your budget guitar videos (not a gun guy, but can appreciate those who are), & especially the two you've done on IEMs. Our church is moving to IEMs and purchased about 10 sets of Shures, but am thinking about my own set. We only play one service a weekend so the fatigue factor shouldn't be an issue, but just like the idea of owning my own.
I think the 1st video was more helpful; this one tended to focus on the production side of monitoring rather than the player, which is fine. I'm going to share the videos with the rest of our team so they can have a better understanding of the technology and if they want their own as well (singers esp. will be sharing the Shures). Thanks!!

As am I... we use stage monitors but none of us want the same thing... this becomes a problem with our 60 something year old pianist and me, the 18 year old guitar player who doesmt need to hear the acoustic as much... Dan, do you have any suggestions for a middle range in ear monitor that could give different mixes to different people?

  • @Kcducttaper1
    @Kcducttaper1 Před 5 lety +1

Love the emphasis on the memory foam tips! As a bass player, I'm rocking a pair of the KZ ZS5's from the previous video with memory foam tips and a braided cable. I had a drummer (without a drum shield) on my left and 16,000 watts of subs on my right all morning and my ears are totally fine! They key is to get the right size of tips so the IEM's seat in your ears properly and don't turn your IEM's up super loud. The point of IEM's is to isolate you from all the noise so you can turn your monitor levels down. Your IEM's should be way quieter than FOH volume.

I tried your memory foam tip recommendation for my KZ-KST IEM's because I wasn't getting a good fit or isolation with the included silicon tips that came with them. Sadly I couldn't get a good fit with the Znari memory foam either. What finally worked for me was the SpinFit CP145 silicon tips, $10.99 on Amazon for 2 pairs. Mediums fit me perfect. Great isolation, they stay put and very comfortable. Just another option for your viewers.

I’ve been using the Mee Audio M6 Pro for a bit over a year with pretty good results. But, just this week I got some new Revo Next QT3 Jen’s with three BAs and one dynamic driver. As a bass player I think they are far and away better than the M6’s. I got them from Massdrop for about $50. Haven’t put the foam tips on them yet, but I do have some. So far, the only negative I’ve found with these is the cable. It’s a bit flimsy and the behind the ear form tubes are nearly worthless. I’ll be adding an aftermarket cable soon!
Love your vids and appreciate the honest opinions.

I have the AS10s and Kz ZSTs. I also have 100 dollar shure's and 600 dollar custom IEMs. The AS10s sound literally as good as the quad driver customs. They don't fit perfectly because they are generic molds, but the fact they have such great clarity at this price point is insane. Amazing value.

Hi, I play bass and bought the ZS6 and ZS10.
ZS6 and ZS10 come with different attach for cable, so be careful if you buy an extra cable.
ZS6 are great, comfortable, great value, however I had to modify the extra cable.

One other possibility for ringing after changing IEMs is that, if the isolation is better than you're used to, you may notice any amount of tinnitus you already have. I notice this after using good noise-cancelling headphones or in bed when it's quieter than usual.

Speaking of monitors on a budget.. I made both headphones (and ear plugs) with a decent pair of ear buds, and some sugru. I put a little neosporin on my ear (cause I didn’t have Vaseline) and molded sugru. Once fully cured, I carefully-and slowly-drilled a hole through the middle and pressfit the earbuds in. I’ve had them since 2013 and still love them. I’ve used the earplugs for years and they work great at the range.
(I’ve read too that you can make a sugru type rubber from cornstarch and silicone caulk)

The swappable tuning nozzles on the DMG's are gimmicky as sold, but in my experience, the grills on IEM nozzles do tend to get dirty. After all, the grills are there to catch debris, and the ability to take the nozzle off and clean it sounds like a pretty big plus to me. This would be a great feature for the next KZ model.

Good question! Because I have bought the KZ AS10 just for fun and comparing myself, but it is very scooped. So I think for live guitar in ear monitoring they are not that good. I’ve tried it, but the guitars sounded thin. My Ultimate Ears and my Westone have way more punch and clarity in the mid region which makes the guitar sound fuller and pronounced..

What is the benefits of iem compared to over hearphone?

About the most expensive buds. Electronics are almost always a case of diminishing returns. So, basically, the more u spend the returns shrink more and more. $100 product is not going to be twice as good as a $50 similar product. It's just as u said, U have to decide what cost to value ratio is right for u.

What's the difference between IEMs and regular earbuds? Is it the audio jack it uses? Sorry don't know much about music performance.

IEM’s are for professional applications. The color the tone less and offer more accurate sound reproduction. Regular ear buds just try to make music sound better, not a true reference.

I'm waiting for the make your own molded video because I have abnormally small ear canals! It's difficult to find good foam tips that are small enough, especially with these larger diameter nozzles. I got the ZS5's with the Znari tips and the tips keep getting stuck in my ears! I may go back to my Shures since they've got a smaller nozzle.
