Thanks for the comment, so glad it was helpful! Lately I’ve been getting more extreme with my IEM guitar EQ. Crazy as it my sound I’ve been doing a low cut up to about 180, even 200hZ and high cut down to 4.5K. It’s has helped tremendously with clarity in a big mix. That said there are 9 in my band so your mileage may vary.
I've been struggling with getting realistic tones in my IEMs, and Google brought me to this video. It's somewhat ironic that you're sitting there playing what looks like a badass Kiesel-- I have one myself and have been playing Carvin guitars since 1985. Great video, very helpful! 🤘😎

I've always added some room reverb to make the sound less headphone-brain-piercing™ but for some weird reason I never thought of adding another cab for stereo while I'm just playing. Gave it a shot and it was just the thing I was missing. Thanks!

POD X3 had mic distance setting, while HD500X that I use now doesn't, which makes proximity effect very prominent. I actually don't like this boominess while playing on the headphones, so I tame it a bit with low cut and reducing "thump", I guess it's a matter of preference :) I really like your tips and presentation, playing on headphones is really important for enjoying modelers, while at the same time this topic is not often mentioned on CZcams, thanks for the vid!
Yes, the proximity effect can be hit or miss, depending on your headphones/IEM’s and how dense your mix is. One thing I’ve been trying since making this video is a suggestion from Cooper Carter who recommends having a speaker/wedge for your guitar even though you’re monitoring through headphones/IEM’s. There’s something really special that happens when the sound from the speaker comes back into your pickups. I notice better sustain, and an overall thicker tone. Give it a try if you’ve got the gear for it. Glad you liked the video, thanks for watching and commenting!
Damn dude. I feel super awful for you. You’re on some of the worst generations of digital amp modeling that has ever existed. I’d rather play unplugged than to plug into that shit. Fractal Audio > Helix > and then everything else is downhill from there exponentially + time past.
@@justinTime077 Getting good tones on HD500X is hard, that's true. But it's possible to get usable tones. I've actually learned a lot about guitar tones and EQ by using POD HD, it forced me to do so ;D I will upgrade for POD Go in the near future (I like it's small form factor). Fractal is probably the best, but it's not for casual players. It has lots of options and the tweaking on it is heavy. I'm not sure if I would be happy about it, I prefer to focus on playing music. Also it would be an overkill for my needs :)
@@johanndaart7326 fair enough, that’s very cool. I have something of a malfunction that makes me try everything and decide what’s the best one. I envy you for that! I will say that it is far from for pros only. Maybe the price is! I couldn’t get into modeling until I broke down and tried a fm3.. it’s got a very satisfying feel and authentic sound and response. No glaring weirdness!

I use an AxeFX3 every week at church and I play through various tube amps and solid state amps when I gig around town in different bands. Even my cheapest amp, a boss katana 100 combo, sounds way better than the AxeFX through in ears. For the premium dollars paid for the AxeFX, I should have a premium sound experience as soon as I select an amp model and speaker cab. I should not have to add anything. In all fairness, no modeling sounds anywhere close to a real amp in the room. But it is especially frustrating when paying top dollar.
I understand your frustration Joel. When I first started using headphones with the Axe Fx III I was very disappointed. The thing is, it’s nowhere close to automatic and takes a LOT of time and patience to dial in. The tips in this video, along with some other methods I’ve learned recently have made all the difference for me. For the first time ever, I’m enjoying the sound through headphones almost as much as playing an amp in the room. I feel the things that helped the most are getting the ambiance right (reverb/delay or combination of the two), using two cab IR’s panned at least 15% left/right, and some slight tweaks to input dynamics. Additionally, you really have to be careful with the low end. For my sounds, I have to be careful with about 110Hz and about 240Hz. When those get out of control my mix suffers and it’s not a fun experience. In any case, I hope this helps and I hope you find that inspiring sound you’re searching for.
Theres a modern enhancer block on the 2 as well I use it all the time
Nice! Do you find that the modern enhancer makes the sound more enjoyable? Default settings or do you make adjustments?
@@ColinGaileyGuitar oh ya I've been using it my leads I just leave it at stock settings it does make it even more enjoyable especially with a strat it just makes everything fatter ive been crafting a lead tone with it and the Friedman BE V1 its a beast of an amp with a strat

Maybe it was better to put the Axe Edit to the screen to see everybody what you make and what you use ( Amp , Cabs ..)...Think about that !

Ive tried to use the autoeq by adding an eq block on my hx stomp. Would you recommend putting that at the end or the start of the signal chain? Or maybe somewhere else?
Good question. That would go at the very end of the chain. Otherwise the EQ would negatively effect the amp/cab tone.
@@ColinGaileyGuitar Thanks for the reply! Yeah, it sounds better at the end of the chain. I'm using the app qu-you for my own in ears live and it has a parametric EQ but not quite 31 band. The frequencies are slightly different (e.g. instead of 125hz it's 127hz ect...). Also there is no specific number for the gain, is more of an approximation. Would you say this should still be ok to use live? Or would you suggest using a different app in conjunction with this (if that's even possible) to use live.
