If ace was the main character with his original devil fruit powers imagine he still got caught, luffy still tries to rescue ace succeeds in doing so but this time luffy Is the one who dies in aces place saving him so that the son of the pirate king lives and will of D continues. That would most likely devastate ace knowing his brother freed him and gave his life. Just my though.

i mean, this would be a far worse story, it is a logical conclusion, but the whole thing jut being a guy who doesnt even lead his own crew...and inherits a crew before getting there. Prefer luffy building his own crew etc...
Of course it’s not the same story. It’s a story about someone becoming King of the pirates, because someone else decided the path for him!

Seriously, imagine seeing one piece but it’s shanks childhood on rogers ship instead of luffy becoming the pirate king and at the very end of the movie it is at the time when shanks arrives at Luffy’s village.
