How to open a stuck Tesla Frunk when it does not pop up at all!

- My Model 3 Frunk (front trunk, hood) was completely stuck closed and would not move at all when you push the button. I tried a few different ways to get it open, such as pushing it down while hitting the open button andprying it open a bit with plastic/metal.
This video is for you AND your 12v battery is completely dead (or if using the 12v jumper in the bumper does not work. - Hry
I was able to move the actuator by hand after removing just a few clips from the front of the undertray.
It's definitely possible...in theory, if you could get the 10mm released on the driver side of the front lip undertray, and remove the 10mm under the "mid" undertray, you could probably get to it. Only extra steps I made would be the wheel and the wheel well cover, but taking those off does give you a bit more room to work with. Glad you got it though!
Thanks for your great instructions on how to do the Frunk. I don't have the expertise or the correct tools to do something like this, so if my Frunk does not work I will have to take it to some place that could do this repair. I know Tesla service center would be expensive, but it would be my last resort.
I hardly use the Frunk anyway, so it would not be a dire emergency.
Take care and happy holidays to you.
Appreciate the insight - I will say, the issue here is a dead 12v battery, so it's actually not even driveable! Only tools required are jack, jack stand, 10mm socket with ratchet....and either really small hands or a some longer objects to help grab the cable.
Lifesaver! I had to dig for your video!
I couldn't find one myself, so I said to myself I should post one once I was done....I went in blind on this one with no guide to follow haha. Happy to hear you found it and it helped though!
Thank You for great information.
Sure thing! Appreciate you checking it out.
Great job thanks
Awesome info this happened to me just now and had no luck with the other methods
Did you get it opened?!?
@@bretlucarelli I was able to get it open, but the cause for mine to not work was a rodent or something ate the harness to the frunk release and the front airdam control
Thank you, I have a mod Y 2022 RWD, the actuator is in the other side,, what do you think, is it the same? Another question, I had a mechanic's workshop pit built in the garage, do i have to remove the wheel in any case? Thank you
I’m not sure on the Y….the cars are so similar I would imagine it’s almost the same. You MIGHT be able to do it without removing the wheel, but it will definitely make it easier to get to some of the screws on the plastic covers.
Thanks for the helpful video. I have a model x and my frunk also won’t open but when I press the key fob to open the frunk I do hear a noise but still won’t open. Is that the actuator that needs replacing or the wire that pulls it. If it is the wire can you please attach a link to one because I cannot find it. Thanks so much
It's hard to say without seeing it with my own eyes, but it sounds like it could be the actuator....mine was doing the same where I could hear a noise but it was not opening. The Model X also has a manual release for the frunk though, have you tried that method yet?
Where did you buy the part? Before I go through that obviously I wanna order the part first and Amazon has too many to decide which ones right
I actually bought mine on eBay for around $30. This was the model number 1098789-00-D
On 2020 model you must look on the other side it is a pain in…. But it is possible. 👌
Oh dang, probably should have mentioned this is a 2019 and it may be different on newer models. Good catch!
Did you try applying 12v to the wires hidden behind the removable cap in the front bumper? That should open the frunk if the battery is dead.
Absolutely! My issue is that the actuator was "moving" but not "engaging"....it makes the sound (with just the 12v or by applying 12v onto the spot behind the bumper). A service tech tried it out as well when he was at my house for something else, and said that "only option is taking it to the service center 2 hours away and having them take parts off until they can fix it"....so I took matters into my own hands.
Thanks for clarifying.
Instructions were Not Clear , Now I 🚲 & I lost my virginity..... 😂
Hey worse things have happened. Welcome to adulthood?
My dad had to do that yesterday because my frunk wasn't opening. My cable broke
Oh man. Was he able to get it resolved?!?
@@bretlucarelli we had to order another part but he's a car dealer. He called Tesla and they couldn't tell us how much the part would be from them. They want to replace it on the 24th when I go out of Texas for a wedding. My dad ordered the part over the counter.
@@bretlucarelli we put a string on the frunk so I can open it when the part comes in. Hopefully before I go to San Antonio on Thursday the part will be here hopefully. I've had my Tesla model 3 for 7 months and I love it, my dad said I'm Tesla until I die now lol.
@@nicolebradley3959 Ah….hopefully he gets it fixed! I actually set up a service for Tesla to come fix it…ended up being about THREE MONTHS because they kept delaying it. I try to avoid their service when I can…closest service center is 2 hours away unfortunately, and their remote service here is SLOOOWWWWWWW.
@@bretlucarelli Tesla wanted to fix it on may 24th well I go from Austin to st Louis for a wedding in my family. Tesla also wants to charge me $350.00 because my car is out of warnty
You Tesla owners keep outing your pile of crap cars by the amount of videos that keep popping up every single minute No thank you I will keep my 10-year-old Chrysler and my 35-year-old Chrysler and my 28-year-old Dodge Intrepid...
Haha I get you. I own and have owned both Tesla and non-Tesla vehicles. I've owned one of them for 2 years with literally 0 issues and $0 invested (except a set of tires, which all cars need). The other one I've owned for less than 2 years and this is the only issue which required any out of pocket money (no oil changes, fluid changes, brakes, or anything like it). They're not for everybody, but for me they are awesome. I'm not sure I would drive an Intrepid even if I was paid to do it, but Chrysler has had some other great vehicles over the years!
@@bretlucarelliThe most I've ever had to put in my car was from a faulty transmission computer modular and a misdiagnosis from a mechanic years ago and it only cost me $1,000 to put a transmission in my Imperial Not a 15 or $20,000 battery replacement All three of my intrepids I've never had any problem except for rotted out brake line on my first one that I owned and that was only $300 to have the lines replaced back in 2006 I wouldn't drive a Tesla if you could pay me. I also owned a 2004 Dodge Neon never had to pay anything over $300 for repair The water pump was replaced twice at $250,000 mi on it there's no way in hell within the 11 years that I've owned it that I paid more than $20,000 in repairs shocks brakes that's it and tires much cheaper than a Tesla! No thank you and the amount of people that are complaining about all the little quirks here and there nah no thanks! I'll keep doing my $30 oil changes here and there and purchasing tires and brakes!
That's awesome! I haven't paid $20k to replace a battery either....don't plan to either.....both of these will be long gone before the battery warranty runs out so I don't have to run that risk. Different strokes (engine joke here...get it?) for different folks. I suspect that if we fast forward 20 years, we'll see about as many of these Model 3's on the road then as we see Neons on the road now (not many in my part of the world).....these aren't "long term" cars in my opinion, but damn they are FUN AS HELL while they're around! It's like combining a fun hobby with driving....even if you hate on them, you should take a ride in some of the fast ones. GUARANTEED to put a HUGE SMILE on your face. You can still hate on them when you're done too, no sweat off my back...I didn't make them haha
@@bretlucarelli I agree with you. I enjoy my Model Y. I also have a 22 year old Monte Carlo which only has 111,000 miles on it. Still works well.
If people don't like EV's, well don't get one. to original commenter, No one is forcing you to buy an EV and don't listen to the government. Gas cars will be around for quite a while. They are not going away anytime soon.
Take care.
