This was SUCH a good movie. Dustin Hoffman did a wonderful job as Dorothy. It doesn't get shown on TV nearly enough so I haven't seen it in a while.

Dustin Hoffman commented emotionally on how he too . would never even notice women who were like Dorothy and you could see the tears in his eyes. A great actor and a great person .

I wish this kind of movie was still being made - funny, great story line, no violence, no gratuitous sex scenes.
That audition Dorothy gave was actually quite gripping - she’d have stood out in real life.
Hoffman's quick 'mirror check' as he's walking was a brilliant choice, probably done impromptu.
So many girls, teens, and women did this in crowded public streets.
As well as in garage windows, and small towns.
It’s truly an amazing phenomenon of earlier times up to this period.

It was brilliant of Sidney Pollack to have Doris Belack, who played Anna Woleck Craig on ABC's soap "One Life To Live" as Rita Marshall in Tootsie! Love it!!!

Dabney Coleman was the go-to actor in the 80s to play a mysoginistic sexist. Anyone remember '9 to 5'? He's brilliant in both films. I don't think he was ever the lead actor in anything, but always gave a commanding supporting actor performance. Just thought I would mention it since everyone's raving about Hoffman (deservedly) but his performance wouldn't have worked as well without a convincing antagonist.
He was great in Other Side of the Mountain as the kind ski coach.

Classic! I was privileged to have director Sydney Pollack as a customer when I worked in NYC . Love the part he plays in this film too...Dorothy's agent. One of the last projects he told me about was a little film with George Clooney called Michael Clayton.

Help me out. Hoffman barges in on his agent, who's on the phone with the west coast. So it has to be late in the morning, NYC time, at least. Then, does he go and win the part that same afternoon? The producer says, "we'll send the contracts over this afternoon." So, when Hoffman meets his agent outside the Russian Tea Room, at lunch hour, it has to be the next day, right? My question is, how could the agent NOT KNOW that Hoffman got the part? The contracts were to be sent over the afternoon of the audition. You would think the agent would have been BLOWN AWAY that someone he represented had got a part on a national TV show!
The great Sydney Pollack stole every scene he was in as the beleaguered agent. I think Michael’s audition would have had to have been the next day as he had to get Dorothy’s look together. That would have been labor intensive. The lunch scene was the day after the audition. George’s office probably would’ve received the contract late the previous day, and George probably hadn’t seen them yet, but if he did he wouldn’t have recognized this client, “Dorothy“ as Michael. The scene in the Russian tea room is probably my favorite in the movie.

Hoffman put in a brilliant performance in this exceptional movie. But I have to say I think his voice as Dorothy Michaels is less than attractive as far as femininity goes. Yes, one of those "suspension of disbelief" things. // I will always treasure the moments when Teri Garr was on screen playing Sandy. Her hysteria scene in Michael's apartment near the end never gets old.
