The technology used was really neat for 2007. A large multi-touch lcd panel wasn't commercially viable for the time, so the screen is actually based on a small projector sitting on the bottom of the case, alongside an infrared camera to detect any number of objects touching the glass. The device had to be in the shape of a bulky table to fit everything properly. $10,000 was a reasonable price for what it could do.
I know this was 4 years ago, but I'm willing to bet no human could produce 1 example of something this can do that would be worth 1,000 dollars let alone 10,000. I agree it's neat, but what does this even mean?
@@davido5317 That's only if you're comparing it to today's tech. Back when this product was launched in 2007, there was almost nothing else like it on the market. The closest thing then available were these big touchscreen panels costing over $100K. $10,000 was reasonable for its capabilities at the time, and it was targeted more towards businesses than average consumers. It also had a high-end PC built in that would cost several thousand by itself. However, it still sold very poorly. The price made sense for the hardware and engineering, but it was clearly too high for widespread adoption. 16 years later, large touchscreen computers are now easily available for a few hundred dollars. That is simply the march of technology over time.
Large LCDs could be made back then. The problem was that there was a really high rate of defects thus making a large LCD usually resulted in multiple defective ones that had to be scrapped. Also the capacitive touch screens were only starting to come out with the LG Prada and then later the Apple Iphone. I graduated around that time so I remember the phones back then. Early smartphones usually had keyboards and were only really good for text messaging and simple games like Scrabble. Blackberries were the market leaders. I still don't use a smartphone since I can't stand the things and, if I want to get a crippling addiction, I'd just use hard drugs instead of getting addicted to a wiretap shoving ads down my throat.
When he said 'instead of using your compact device to find directions, why don't you do that with a computer the size of a small car?' i actually found myself, 'yeah, i'd like that'
Vincent Lauria I think Apple is tbh. The iPad has sold more devices than any other computer manufacturer has their laptops. The surface sales are something like less than 2% of the market.
Actually, I want a 4K 48" Coffee Table. Adjustable height, and tilt top function to tilt it up to 45 degrees. The whole table top as one large touch tablet. When it's off, it's a table. When it's on, it's a tablet. Include 4 drawers in the bottom to put small items in it, and the gap under the table top to move things down when you use it as a tablet. It's a great idea for useful furniture, using Gorilla Glass & OLED display technology.
And in 2016, Microsoft is darn close to MAKING this damn thing. Took them long enough. But nobody told them, this is a really stupid idea? They better become an SaaS company fast if this is the best idea they have for hardware.
I went to one of the Microsoft headquarters just inside DC and I got to use the surface. I asked about the price and they said since it's so expensive, they won't be releasing it to the public consumer until they can get the price down to a reasonable price; he said probably around 2,000 to 3,000. And it also have 50 points of interest because it's not a touch screen. It has cameras positioned in it to read everything.
@ rwkster That's a cool point. I used to live in Washington D.C. and I've seen the Hope Diamond about a million times due to every friend and family member wanting to see it. With something like this people could actually interact with each other and talk about it instead of just taking a stupid picture and moving on.
Actually it wasn't a "windows comp", it haven't existed yet. We used to know it as MS-DOS (or PC-DOS when it came in a IBM), the trademark "windows" begun with the GUI. The Windows 3.1 was just a gui for DOS.
I remember when this came out. And I also remember that I wasted all those years. Not in a really bad way but more in a boring way. But man is it fun to go back to college in your 30s after many years of trolling on the internet. Writing classes and book reports are so easy when you're an adult and you get to humiliate young boys and girls whenever your class assignment is to voice opinions or get into debates. There's one girl somewhere in the area who really doesn't like me due to be brow-bashing her in a discussion assignment. Don't go to college when you're 18. Go to college when you're in your late 20s or early 30s. Its way easier and you get to bully the kids and make them feel dumb. Bullying is really fun when you get to be the bully.
You can imagine a scenario were a friend drops over to your house. A few beers later said friend trips & falls onto the screen rendering it useless. I've seen it happen to glass coffee tables, people going right through them.
Yeh, I actually work in the museum field and there are a few museums who use this tech, i think National Museum of American History uses it. At the conferences there are a couple of vendors who always do their sales pitch of this for me, even though I'm not in a position to order/buy it for my workplace, lol. It definitely is kind of silly to use it at home though, lol.
The table's too expensive to really be practical for an entire restaurant roll-out. Even if it wasn't, it wouldn't get rid of servers, just increase the amount of people they could serve. All they'd have to do is bring food in and take care of refills for drinks. Realistically, service would just get better for people, and you wouldn't have to wait for your waiter/tress to swing around to order more food. But like I said, this is honestly too expensive in the first place.
This angers me so much. I thought of this exact thing a couple months ago. I was like "Omg this idea is insane, I'm gonna be right if i can figure out how to do it" That day I saw the next James Bond movie. These things were everywhere. I was sad. But it still hadn't been done in RL!!! ... Until now.
I want one...I really see this becoming usefull when it reaches a mass market and stuff. Imagine using one of these as an HTPC in your home and being able to have everything in your house networked to it.
it's probably water proof and really reinforced so it won't screw up easy. after all, having a screen that big and expensive sitting facing up on your living room would definitely get you worried otherwise.
They would never do the actual ordering of food through a computer for the same reasons they won't ever replace workers with robots. People need jobs and the income that comes with those jobs. Microsoft Surface tables at every restaurant would put thousands if not millions of Americans out of work, which is something we cannot afford.
Holy shit, they actually advertise that for home uses. That thing is so expansive only corporations buy them. I've always wanted to have the Surface for myself, but there is no way I would ever spend all my money on it.
That table WAS called Surface. When the tablets came along, M$ renamed the table from Surface to Pixelsense and gave the name "Surface" to the tablets.
honestly, thats like something out of Star Trek. I bet you there will be things like that soon. and I want one! I like the idea of ordering food at the table, picking it through a list...yeah I'm nerdy lol
Lol the more I watch this, the funnier it gets. "If you've still got any credit left on you're card after you buy the table, why not buy a phone...or two phones?" Lol!
What if you accidentally sit on the table with you phone in your pocket and then it instantly grabs all your embarrassing holiday snaps out and shows them to everyone?
I think it is a cool invention, just not a normal consumer product. It's really for businesses like resturants, hotels, etc. than for you and me to use at home.
I wonder if you could import your music from your computer to this (probably)? I also find it funny that this parody has more views than the actual commercial.
How am I just discovering this video now? 😂
Ayy, Hi Michael
No idea. Were you living under a rock?
Welcome to the club of showing this to everyone
Crazy how much of this came thru but in different ways. You can see a lot of the ideas in the surface studio and dial sharing the same DNA.
HEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYY, love your stuff man. We have the same niche interests
I saw it back then and I’m rewatching now. Timeless classic.

All these years later and still the best parody I’ve ever watched.
the delivery is perfect
When he said 'instead of using your compact device to find directions, why don't you do that with a computer the size of a small car?' i actually found myself, 'yeah, i'd like that'
man, seeing this again 7 years later and this still puts me in tears lolololol
This was 12 years ago
Awesome observation
Omg, 13 years in, still goin'.
14 year
man, seeing this again 7 years later and this still puts me in tears lolololol
I know everyone has said this before, but i love the ending "it's a big ass table"
Just a correcting, the Surface was $12,000, not 10K.
"Take that, Apple," it says, sarcastically.
Well who's laughing now?
Vincent Lauria I think Apple is tbh. The iPad has sold more devices than any other computer manufacturer has their laptops. The surface sales are something like less than 2% of the market.
UKIP. czcams.com/video/SJzRa7HWVqs/video.html
"Its a big ass table,
Take that apple"
Thats the best quote EVER
It's like an iPhone - but you just need wheelbarrow to take it with you. Laughed so hard at this one. Loved both your spoofs - hope to see more!
I still remember when my teacher played this whole thing through in class thinking it was legit.
That did NOT happen
Lets all look back and remember that this was a thing...
It still is a thing, it's just called pixelsense now.
microsoft surface has come a long way

time travelling at 9gag brought me there
same, *high five*
uploaded 2007, what?
almost a decade ago.
yup. microsoft surface used to be this expensive, big ass table.
This is even better in 2022
HOw has this channel not recieved partnership status????? the quality and humor is insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kind of surprising that smart fridges took off but not this
16 years later......damn........I graduated that year, gettin old is wild.
"Oh fuck, wait a second dude, my table just crashed."
The Apple Vision Pro made me think of this.
yep...
I went to one of the Microsoft headquarters just inside DC and I got to use the surface. 0:46 Thank god he bought this table computer so he could get directions to somewhere 5 blocks away
actually it's a pretty neat idea for museum exhibitions when you can get multiple people to interact with information and with each other.
Had to look for this video again. After more than a decade
"BIG ASS TABLE.." best line xD too funny
This parody was ahead of its time
@ rwkster That's a cool point. I used to live in Washington D.C. and I've seen the Hope Diamond about a million times due to every friend and family member wanting to see it. Agree, at least the table can be use as a table.
CES 2021: Hasbro FINALLY releases this for tabletop gaming. W00T!!!

"The future is here, and its not an iPhone... its a big ass table" cracked me well good up xD
"its not an iphone, its a big ass table. take that apple" HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
I want my iPhone to be a big-ass table.
NOW THE TABLE SAYS
YOU NEED EDGE
YOU NEED EDGE
GET THE WONDERFUL EDGE NOW!
EDGE EDGE EDGE EDGE EDGE EDGE EDGE
You can imagine a scenario were a friend drops over to your house. A few beers later said friend trips & falls onto the screen rendering it useless. I've seen it happen to glass coffee tables, people going right through them.

when this video came out, the most advanced phone I could afford was a Palm Treo 650. Now we can get a phone that does most of this for 100 bucks
XD I love the little 'take that apple' put in at the end
The table's too expensive to really be practical for an entire restaurant roll-out.

this is one of the best videos of all time
Apple: LETS MAKE A BIG IPHONE!
Micosoft: damn, Lets make an even bigger iPhone!
The future is being able to compute in mid air. You know how those scifi movies always have people interacting with computers in the air?
Five years later... Surface!
This angers me so much. I thought of this exact thing a couple months ago. I was like "Omg this idea is insane, I'm gonna be right if i can figure out how to do it"
That day I saw the next James Bond movie. These things were everywhere. I was sad.
But it still hadn't been done in RL!!!
...
Until now.
2023 and this is still hilarious.
I want one...I really see this becoming usefull when it reaches a mass market and stuff. Imagine using one of these as an HTPC in your home and being able to have everything in your house networked to it.

They all were laughing at Microsoft then for this big ass table computer but look who's laughing now....
Holy shit, they actually advertise that for home uses. That thing is so expansive only corporations buy them. I've always wanted to have the Surface for myself, but there is no way I would ever spend all my money on it.
This brings my back to my Year 7 days
I saw a similar map (vector only) of the planetoid facility in the Aliens movie (1986)
Got to play with one of these today. The whole time, I was thinking: It's a big-ass table. LOL!
That table WAS called Surface. When the tablets came along, M$ renamed the table from Surface to Pixelsense and gave the name "Surface" to the tablets.
honestly, thats like something out of Star Trek.
I bet you there will be things like that soon.
and I want one!
I like the idea of ordering food at the table, picking it through a list...yeah I'm nerdy
lol
I love the reactions of people that are just hearing about this. But Microsoft should use the line "Take that Apple!" in all there commercials.
I laughed to the point of tears with the big as a small car comment. LOL still laughing as I type.
"One day your computer will be a big ass table!!!"
LMFAO!!!!!!!!!
i really think that if Microsoft put a thing that reacts to drinks in the table they would make it waterproof...
'Its not an iPhone, its a big ass table' HAHAHA!
Yeah the problem with this is that there isn't much to make fun of with this thing because it's so damn cool.
"Why not use a device the size of a small car?"
so I lol'd.
The new one cost $8,400 and the price is only going to go down.
I DON'T KNOW IF I'LL LIVE TO SEE THAT!
I would still love to play board games on this with my mates
LOL
"its not an iPhone its a big ass table, take that Apple"
Sent from my iPhone
i would get it but not for that much money, man i can have someone bring someone back alive with that money.
"The future is here, and it's not an iPhone...it's a big ass table" lol
It's not an iphone, it's a big ass table. That's my favorite line.
I thought it had more to do with differing fingers from phones and drinks. but I guess you do have a point :D
I would love to have his in high def.
Why is it that every "highest rated comment", is a quote that we ALL just heard on the video?
"Take that Apple"
"It's a big ass table."
I think it is a cool invention, just not a normal consumer product. It's really for businesses like resturants, hotels, etc. than for you and me to use at home.
lol they should make a prank that whenever someone sits on it it makes a fart noise
@jangofett132 It has glass above the display, which will translate on the water spilling on the floor just like a regular glass table.
"It's not an iPhone, it's a big-ass table" XD
When this comes out, I so have to get one! :) I love the concept...and touch screen stuff is seriously OP on the awesome factor.
give it 4 years, it'll fit in your pocket :)
love it
"its not an ipod...its a big-ass table"
ROFL!!
"iF you still got any credit left on your card after you buy the table computer..." hahahahahaha!! excellent!! THAT THAT APPLE! coooool!
That would be a hell of a bill if you spilt you drink...
the last line had me laughing my ass off XD
@pocho31 Yes, it actually exists. Microsoft demoed this thing awhile ago.
remember all that money you spent on itunes to get your favorite songs?? well get ready to do it again but this time for your new tv-computer
"And it's not an iPhone, it's a big ass table, take that Apple." ROFL!!!!!
His voice is a killer! Ad-oriented quality ;-)
i never heard of it til now and now i want one, i cant find a place to buy!
The iPad before the iPad ever existed
I wonder if you could import your music from your computer to this (probably)?
I also find it funny that this parody has more views than the actual commercial.
my name is table, and surface wasnt my idea.
I never even heard of this until today...
"Take that apple"
