- While other moss pole designs clearly do work. I needed to create something sturdy, modular, less messy, used less moss, took a shorter time to "water", dried out less frequently, and didn't involve removing zip ties or cutting wire to access the plants that had been air layered.
I think this moss pole design hits all of those boxes.

As far as the look, I have a few ideas, if someone does not like the plastic. You can attach sheet coco coir to the plastic with glu, or with velcro pieces that have a sticky back. Or sheet moss. Or burlap. Or cork sheet. Or glu bamboo sticks on it. You could get really creative and artistic with it. However, the cleanability and reusability of the plain plastic is one of the great features of your pole, so maintaining that is important.

I just started staking plants to thicker branches from trees. I think it’s looks a lot better then the standard moss poll. That being said, I’ve found that most plants don’t attach as easy to a tree branch as they do to moss!
Love how it is modular, reusable, and dries out faster. Seems less wasteful. Excited to see where this project goes!

1/3 of my plants are on poles, I really love this idea, but I do think you should take it to the next level and find a way to shorten the gap when extending it so you don’t have to tie your plants to the pole. Maybe find a way to place some grid like holes in the connecting section so the roots can just keep going without disruption? Keep going with this and seriously get a patent!

Its doable if you make the coupling tube part of the inside diameter rather than outside, it would add the step of gluing a part but you could make the pole more seamless and reduce the gap to about an inch. youd have to lay the end tape half way off the tube rather than on the edge also but each piece would only need a little ring glued in the top and the next piece can just friction fit.
I second the other comment that encouraged you looking into a patent for this. It’s a great idea and you deserve credit for it

I completed the cut through the top of the pole, without thinking, but now I'm realizing that if I do the same with the coupling and the next pipe, then you can keep a consistent root and just rotate the coupling 180°to hold the two pipes better.
I'm definitely going to have to try this method of moss poll! I've seen so many other videos with the wire mesh and making the plastic backing and tieing it to a metal rod for stability just looks like too much work. This is easy, cheap, and completely reusable! And like the plastic back moss polls, it'll even have the added moisture retention capability already built in! Pure genius!

Love this design. I have about 10 of the poles. I found a cool way to extend them is to take your extension, heat up 7cm at the bottom with a heat gun. Get a spare piece of a pipe of the same size and stretch it out. No need for connector. I put a piece of yogurt lid with small holes in it to prevent roots from growing all the way down to make chop and prop easier in the future
Moss poles and other supports make me grumpy. But this looks like it’s useful and doable. Modular is the word!!
I have learned so so so much from your channel! I have a super super sad monstera that I got a few years ago that thank goodness is still alive but it doesn’t look happy. I’m excited to try your tips and see how it goes!

I made it, and it works great so far. Its not super stable in the pot, but that probably isn´t the poles fault. For now it´s ok and when I want to put a extntion on I will get creative. But I have to say it really dries out slover than the pole I had before and that allready had a back. I used cling film to wrap between some of the leaves to further cover the moss. I also love how easie it is to water. I can either put a small bottle on the top, or just dump some water in. The very top whre the pipe is empty, there for I have space to just fill up with water. Right now the unused space at the top is wrapped with cling film and therefor the water I pur in had enough time to go into the moss and doesn´t just run down the front. I have a monstera adansonii on it and it really loves it and grows nicely.
This is neat. I had a moss pole in one of my plants and i couldnt keep up with the watering of it(literally dry every like.. 4 hrs). I ripped the moss pole out and said forget it.
This moght keep it moist enough that i dont need to water a pole every 4 hrs
Highly dependent on the quality of moss you're using and your natural humidity.

Very clever! I really like your method, Lee. I’m sure it’s also less messy than the moss poles I’ve made with the wire. But…. I will not even attempt to make your style of moss pole bc I know my limitations 😂!
I find watering my moss poles time consuming and, worse, bc this is still relatively new to me, I don’t have a feel yet for whether the plant itself is dry or not. So… there’s an element of anxiety and worry bc obviously I don’t want to kill my plants! Anyway, thank you for the clip. I always enjoy your presentations and I learn from them.

@@KillThisPlant I agree! I was getting close to that point so I’ve dialed it back some. But… my personality is such that I want to do things right … and I’ve invested money and time into these beauties so I’d rather they lived!
I tried sticking wood in the soil and I tried digging my finger in to see if itMs wet, but we humans do not have sense of wet, we can feel texture and temperature and based on that know when something is wet, but at a certain point I can't make out if the plant is dry at the bottom or not, so I got a moistmeter, stick it in all the way and know for sure, takes anxiety out of the hobby for me by a lot.
As for moss poles I think I will opt for wood instead, I don't wanna buy moss and I won't be able to find enough locally to fill a tube, in the wild they climb up trees and that's what I wanna try, just get a nice branch and make a jungle forest in my living room
@@single_use_planet_ just make sure the wood is thoroughly cleaned and sprayed with eight. Ya know fungus gnats, spider mites, whatever else bugs germs and bacteria. You don't want them killing your plants.

Genius. For those who’d use aroid mix can possibly use a mesh for the opened part. Although it’ll be more work to do multiple propagations having a mesh. Unless splitting the plants in 2 like what you did before the leaf cuttings.
I think its something worth trying. I haven't heard as positive results from someone trying an aroid mix pole throughout.
@@KillThisPlant Ah I see. I do use aroid mix for poles. Well, gonna use again. Moss is hard for me as in my home, it's 30-31 deg celsius, mold grows like crazy on them. Definitely an irritating thing to look at hahaha.
Would've used your method if I had not just spent almost $200 on the new poles for the aroid mix. 🥲

I don’t like the looks of your tube, but it’s very ingenious…I , personally, like the looks of the green wire with moss inside…of course, I’m viewing this from a woman’s perspective, and you’re viewing your pole from a man’s point of view…we do see things differently….I did learn a lot from this video…about the aerial roots and the back side of the plant…great info! As you can tell, I’m just learning about houseplants…Be Blessed!

Personally, I despise moss poles wrapped with wire; They look cheesy to me.
Lee’s design is not only super practical, but it’s sleek and can be “jazzed up” in multiple ways. [re: another commenter had excellent suggestions.. I may run with it and use med-large cork bark pieces😍.. although, that will probably make air layering more difficult, but live and learn?]
You should start selling them. Make sure to patent your idea and design, hopefully you have already done that.
I haven't seen your video on making these yet. I just made a traditional one today and it took me for ever! Your design definitely has some major advantages! Being able to take the overgrown plant out easily is major. Ease of filling it incrementally. Ease and no mess storing, handling, installing and extending the pole. No scratches from wire or plastic mesh. Very cool! I appreciate that you come up with original, innovative, pracrical ideas. (So often everyone just does their version of the same thing)

4 inch black gutter pipe work well for people in the UK yes 4 inch they they don’t do a 3ich and 2 ich for me is small and drys out to fast because here in uk our house sit at 50 humidity
Oh and save you needing to paint then if you don’t mind gloss black but if don’t want to be gloss sand it with 240grit then 320 then 400
I wanted to re pot monstera deliciosa, but it doesn't have any aerial roots yet, even tho the plant is quite big :/ btw that moss pole is genius!

Love your vids!! How are the leaves on yours so large? Mines 3x the height but the leaves are half the size. It's full and has lots of leaves, maybe 2" between each node. Any tips or tricks?
If they're climbing, light is the only other factor.
Can you also use this for a cutting of monstera deliciosa, potted for the first time? Or will the stem get too big for that eventually and is it smarter to use something else?
I wouldn’t recommend a moss pole of any kind for a large form deliciosa. The stem just gets too big.
I really want to try you design but I was hoping to use tree fern fibre instead of sphagnum moss. Any thoughts on if it would still stay packed into the pipe as it's much more airy? Thanks for you amazing content and advice, as usual!

Thanks, the poles I used were 2" in diameter. I think holes might be a good idea, but maybe not necessary due to the small amount of moss used. I feel like they can access oxygen fairly easily.
I love this idea. Great video and design Lee. I do have one question, with the moss being exposed in the front but not the back, how do you keep it uniformly damp. Would it make sense to drill some holes in the back of the pole to mist through?
I don't seem to have issues with that. Think of it like how if you wet a corner of a paper towel eventually it will eventually be completely soaked.
It's about practicing knowing how much water to spray.

Do you fertilize your moss? And can you reuse moss?
I do. very lightly. Yes you can reuse moss to a point. I would probably replace it after a year or when it visibly starts to break down.
Can someone tell me If this is standard pvc? It seems thinner and lighter and I can't seem to find it online
I like it I've seen it a couple of times now on your channel and I think I might try it. I do have one question. Because of perception of a video I can't decide how big the pole is? Is it 2 in 3 in have you found a size that you particularly like?
I guess that's two questions.
The tube is 2" wide, 24" long.
I think this size is the most efficient, in terms of moss usage.
@@KillThisPlant Thank you and you have my word. If and when it finds its way into my videos by the natural overlap, I will credit your channel every time it makes an appearance. Just don't expect much of a boost. If that channel gets 10 views out of a video I consider it a very successful video.
When you water the plant, do you water it pot only and spray the moss at the same time, or do you spray the moss more often? If the latter, how do you avoid constantly moist soil in the pot from the unabsorbed water running down from the pole?
I treat my soil and moss pole as two separate entities. My soil has its own schedule, my moss has its own schedule.
You really need a great well draining soil so that excess water dripping from your moss doesn't cause issues in your soil. Generally having a smaller pot helps too. The more you get used to watering the moss pole, the more you'll be able to gauge how much water it can hold without it dripping down.

Same way! Pole in first. Leca lining the bottom, plant roots in, back-fill with LECA.

What's your take on the green tape and the growth.
It doesn't restrict growth. As long as you're putting it on the node right below and not where a new leaf would form.
I've made this moss pole with a just a BOX CUTTER no power tools. Sucks..... But do able if you don't have power tools and can't want to buy any just do this lol

Where did you get the pvc and what is the exact type? Is it water or electrical? The ones I’m seeing are so thick and heavy but yours seems thin and light weight
The tubing I found was specifically for central vacuum. Even though I bought it from Lowe's I haven't been able to find it's exact online listing (Canada).

I don't really have a preference either way. At some point the leaves will get so large you cant see any moss pole. In this case I am function over form.

Niiiice! Now you just need to rig a drip system that automatically delivers water/feed.. I think it would be relatively simple with this setup, too.
Instead of providing too much of a tl;dr, Tanner at Serpa Design does some pretty cool things with paludariums and vivariums that would be great for inspiration.
Utilizing a tweaked sort of concept that he uses for his living moss walls, you could add a new hose at the top of each moss pole, throw that baby on a timer, then let it slow drip every 1-2 days or so.
.. Or get a mister of sorts? That seems messy and less controlled, though.
Either way, the lazier one can be longterm, the better. 🤷♀️ 😬

In past videos you preferred the look of wood. In one video you showed beautiful birch branches. I thought that was a novel idea. I understand the practical reasons moss polls serve but don’t like the aesthetic on any of them I’ve seen so far.

Fungus gnats....do you have a problem with them and the moss?
If you have a gnat problem and the moss poles are consistently wet they will try and be in the moss but I find they still prefer soil.

Why do you have to use moss in the tube?
it is the best medium for a plant to root vertically, it retains moisture well.
I have seen others try, soil, LECA, and other materials but none seem to work as consistently well.
Hey, Does anyone by any chance know what species goes under Jade plant? I know the Crassula does, but I have a purple plant that has a woody stem and kind of grows like a palm. It has white flowers that grow on a stem similar to a snake plant but I have no idea what it is. It's leaves aren't particularly thick, but It's a succulent, from what I can tell.
It was sold to me as a jade plant, but I really wanna check out it's care so I can actually care for it properly without stressing.

I probably already said this but I feel like your the spirit plant god, when I walk across the bridge nearby I throw my avocado pits and skin into the ocean hoping their will be a wave of avocadoes that come back. P.s. I still keep watering my dead herb I got in September.
When I walk on the beach I’m always picking up stuff people toss into the ocean. Maybe composting would be a better idea for your food scraps?
