Stringbean was a distance cousin (2nd) to my Dad. They grew up together in the country in a little town in Jackson Co, Ky. Dad said they would go fishing every morning and come home around noon. In the afternoons they would gather with friends on the porch and play music until late at night. Stringbean got his first banjo by selling two of his Dads chickens and buying his banjo. His Dad played the banjo and taught him how to play his. He was a true musician!
my PawPaw worked the tobacco fields and was bunkmates with Stringbean down around McKee back, I suppose, in the late 1930s. Most of my family on both sides is from that area; Isaacs, Shepherd, Farmer, and Reece.
Jackson County KY is an interesting place. Drive just a bit off the interstate and you’ll almost go back in time - in a very good way. Some of the last true Appalachian accents are in Jackson County. Quite a few great musicians from there including Keith Whitley’s right hand man for many years, Randy Hayes, as well as Heath Van Winkle who for many years worked with bluegrass acts including Charlie Sizemore and Ronnie Reno.
You mean before it was commercialized, electrified, marketed, and people put on parodic personas, like here? Or just what you first heard when young? Nostalgia ain't what is used to be.
He wore those clothes because he was raised in geographically isolated Appalachia - poorest areas in the US. Shot not because he owed drug money or anything like that but just because someone found out that he kept most of his money in his house. There’s a big difference from the gangster rapper of today and Stringbean. He had a lot of talent and the ones today well uh…
Stringbean always makes me smile. He’s so funny it’s easy to forget how fine a musician he was. Luckily, there are a ton of videos of him on CZcams, so he’ll never be forgotten.
String Bean, Grandpa Jones and Speck Rhodes were legends on them old Saturday evening country music shows. I can remember my Grandma’s and Grandpa’s not doing anything or going play until them shows where over with.
“Boooy you shoulda been here yesterday Everybody’s really catchin em yesterday Everybody caught there limit yesterday I think I’ll just haul off and go fishin yesterday.”
It was nice to see String-bean again, with his costume. I remember some thief killed him to rob him, and only got $2.00. String-Bean was a true legend!
I stumbled on this dude watching old Flatt and Scruggs Vids. I find the guy quite entertaining for what it is. I found out that he and his wife were found murdered by burglars back in 1973 that's terrible.
What's worse is that it was his own kin! Although convicted and sentenced they are already out of prison. They killed a national treasure and his wife. So sad.
I was a kid,but I remember it too. If you grew up on hee haw, then you'd know he and Grandpa Jones were best friends. Even bought land together. They would go fishing together. Grandpa Jones bought him a gun and ironically, that was the gun used to kill him. String bean didn't trust banks. He was always flashing money. And every one he knew kept telling him to put the money in the bank. The guys that killed him ransacked his house looking for the money. They didn't find it,but string bean and his wife returned home while they were there and he was murdered and his wife, Estelle was killed trying to escape. Next day.....it would be grandpa Jones who would find the dead bodies. He never ever got over it either. After it was all said and done, trial and all,men in prison...... String beans house was sold. During the winter,it was cold and the new occupants built a fire in the fireplace. Later, they would find thousands upon thousands of burned up,charred pieces of dollar bills................
Went into the Marines last I heard of String he was alive and well. I returned home and time went by until 2020. And today I learned someone killed my friend String. Then later on in the day I learned his killer was set free? Now what is wrong with I just wrote? I miss String.
I remember watching Stringbean back then as a kid , he made everyone laugh. The “Country Music “ today has lost its roots and its humor . We’ll never see fun performers like Stirngbean again.
A few months before I heard he died I was 16 and working in a fried chicken dinner. Our business owner asked us to stay open late cause he had invited the He Haw tour bus to a free dinner. All the Hee Haw musicians came lined up and we each a two piece chicken box with fries and roll. Us three employees got to shake each of there hands. They were all very nice and humble people. A few months later I read in the newspaper how String Bean and his wife had been murdered. I’ll never forget it.
As a young kid in the 60s and early 70s you would watch captain kangaroo Mr green jeans. Although kids back then were drawn to String-bean also. His songs/comedy the pants. Growing up watching Hee Haw with my family I always liked the scarecrow skit with Stringbean and letters from home skit String did. I remember when I was about 8 years old we were watching Hee Haw. I overheard my parents talking about String-bean and how they missed him on the show. I remember asking my mother where is String-bean. She informed me that String and his wife were murdered by some bad men.
My mom and dad took me and my three brothers to the grand old opera where we saw string bean grandpa Jones Millie Pearl never forget as long as I live. Heartbroken to hear when he was shot. It was the end of an era.
Stringbeans best friend was grampa jones, who I had supper with once up on the moutain where he lived. Never met stringbean but ran with Mike travis who was son of merle, and my neighbor on henderson lake. I lived with my uncle then, Jimmy C newman and aunt Elva may with Gary their son. Miss them all and thankful I still get to see Gary ever so often.
There is no “stealing” when it comes to the evolution of musical genres. Literally every genre has been inspired by genres that have existed before it.
I was going go fishing with him in Wisconsin with my Cousin Dale Peterson he worked for a radio station in California is going to come up but then something happened I’m gonna make it would’ve been cool
That's a very weird but unique act. He didn't trust banks and kept his money hidden in his home. After a break in, and a robbery and he was murdered one evening after returning home. The money was eventually found years later by the new owner of the home. .
$20,000 hidden behind a brick in the chimney, word got out that he kept his money at home and it cost him and his wife their lives. A most horrible story. Howdy from Dallas Texas
I like it when he says way back in '89, and you realize he's talkin' 1889! Luv ya stringbean, you're one of a kind. Especially with that hat thing.
that hat thing makes me feel so happy
Nice rhyme you just made too...😊

I was related to Adam and Eve
When country music was still country music
yesssss
You mean before it was commercialized, electrified, marketed, and people put on parodic personas, like here? Or just what you first heard when young? Nostalgia ain't what is used to be.
Yep
Sick of hearing this comment on every old music video
This is bluegrass
Rapped, wore sagging pants, and died by getting shot. Stringbean was the OG.
Three years, and i still get a chuckle off this 👍
😂
FACT Sting was 40 plus years ahead of the Rappers and Kids saggin

Raised on Strings music.
Miss you and Estelle.

R.I.P. Folks.
Good ol' String Bean! He's original and for real! Nothing fake about him!
string bean one of the best country performers ever
The chords on that banjo he's using are DOPE.... Never heard a banjo player play those chords... This guy's a LEGEND and a musical genius.
I remember watching him with my dad back then and today I still play the banjo... rip string he was one of a kind!
Why somebody would murder him we might never know. Maybe they thought he was rich. Stringbean didn't care about being rich.
Stringbean always makes me smile. He’s so funny it’s easy to forget how fine a musician he was. Luckily, there are a ton of videos of him on CZcams, so he’ll never be forgotten.
Got to love older humor, far different than today’s
Reminds me of my grandpa when he used to tell me those stories. May he rest in peace
Bless your pap
Reminds me of my old hound dawg
booooring

There is no “stealing” when it comes to the evolution of musical genres. Literally every genre has been inspired by genres that have existed before it.
Thats good stuff
My Grandpa Richard Treese looked a lot like Stringbean. I just realized It is strange that they both passed away less than a year and a half apart

Six tours in Vietnam wasn't enough for my Mom, Welcome Back Vietnam to the Pettycoat Disfunktion Junktion AMX
I ride down by his ole homestead and death place atleast once a year
❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
Caught him back in '89... Hah! That's 1889. You forget that for someone in this era being related to someone from the late 1800s is possible.
Is this song on Apple Music?
I was going go fishing with him in Wisconsin with my Cousin Dale Peterson he worked for a radio station in California is going to come up but then something happened I’m gonna make it would’ve been cool
