If you were to ever try it, I will share four surprises you would learn: 1) These guys are way better than you're assuming. 2) You'd be a lot worse at it than you're assuming. 3) It is a lot more fun than you think, 4) This community is awesome people spending time outdoors, getting exercise and not judging people for how they enjoy life, which is great. So, come out and try it. You'd probably have a ton of fun, meet some great people and learn something new.

It’s funny, the “HEMA sportsman” usually come out and get thrashed and the learning curve when LARPers join HEMA is overcome pretty quick when they switch to that game. This idea that HEMA is better just because “it’s real” is silly.
Okay, this is an unnecessarily long comment but im a bit of a weapons nerd and the autism got the better of me here. Larp swords are designed to not do any kind of damage in order to be used safely and so they're made of lightweight materials. This means that they require a different skill set/learning curve to use than swords made out of metal because the weight is different, making it mice differently. The difference is like throwing a paper airplane vs throwing a rock, while both actions are throwing, due to the difference in weight it is done differently. Also show fighting and larp fighting (or any kind of battle fighting) are different anyway. As show fighting (like what you see at historical demonstrations) is made to look good and to show off techniques, so the fights are made to be longer and show off more blocks/parrys/etc. Whereas fighting in battles (real or fake) the aim is to spend as little time as possible fighting so there's less chance of being hit. This is a more effective fighting style but it's way less interesting to watch. Also 'if your gonna use a sword, use it right' isn't exactly relevant when you remember that this kind of fighting is literally just done for fun, it's like complaining that you don't have to go through boot camp to play laser tag.

Im visting eastern europe at the moment and saw some kids playing with some dull metal swords and and proper shields at the city park, and they were really going hard at it. I dont think swinging these pool noodles frantically while chanting “magical missile” like these weirdos in the video can even be compared. There is no transfer of skills here to a real martial art like hema.

I really wish yall wouldn't label this larping. Dag, Amtgard, and all their variations are just combat sports. I'm not knocking it, but let's call it what it is. There's no story, no real characters, and you just fight. It's fun, but it doesn't go anywhere. Larping needs to have a little more going on than "We don't like the people on that side of the field because we're on this side of the field." There are no mechanical benefits to the faction you choose so you just pick your favorite colors or animal. So each team is color-coded with their own mascot. That guy's wearing a hockey jersey and the other is clearly in gym shorts. Just call it a sport already, fellas. C'mon. It's MMA with foam bats.

I would LOVE to try LARPing.. closest one to me (PA) is about 2 1/2 hours away. My issue is I see this and can’t help but think about the Wild swordplay (I know many are saying this is technique but idk.. I’m also VERY VERY new to this).. I guess the videos I’ve seen of LARPing, and the part of Role Models, I think of it as a bit slower and more of methodical swordplay rather than just wildly swinging in a chaotic “technique”. Am I maybe thinking of a different style? Or just entirely wrong?
Okay so I love Larp fighting but this isn’t very technical sword play. If you would rather learn that then you might want to check out HEMA. Or if you still want the battlefield vibes you could try and scout for a slower more role play focused Larp. But do what ever. I personally do both HEMA and Larp. I’ve had a lot of enjoyment from both.

I wish there was more technique in LARP duels. It kills the mood when I see the SAME over the top swing to the back of the head. You guys look like wet noodles.
Fun fact: metal swords, at least actual martial weapons used for combat back in the day, aren't as heavy as you think they all are. A few of larps our there require their foam weapons to meet a weight requirement, that in a few cases are heavier then what the actual weapon would weigh.
They are fucking heavy though, It took me a while to get to a historical one hander to move quick in my HEMA practice. I think the average person vastly underestimates the weight and how hard it is to recover from a missed swing. I think thats what makes these foam videos look a little ridiculous, the "nerf sword" speed

And if you give your fighters a place to execute these skills that is educational, promotes accountability and a sense of honor, I've seen fighters admit that their opponent struck a better blow. I know not everything is everybody's cup of tea, but why do you seem to seek conflict with everybody who doesn't want to do things the way you do them? I've noticed this on both CZcams and Facebook

This is a cool concept but it would be cool to see weight, along with more shock absorbtion added to the swords to see more realistic sword fighting: then you'll see me there.
There is no such thing as real sword fighting. Adding weight, especially to guys that can throw and defend, only slows the pace to a crawl and makes it incredibly boring. All of that aside, real swords didn’t weigh much at all. These are just under half the weight. 🤘

All stick games from foam, rattan and steel all have a manual with rules designed in this same manner. None of them are real. They are all games.

In any larp game that uses foam weapons (as far as I'm aware) getting hit in the hand does not count as long as you are holding a weapon in that hand

Everytime I see a larper it reminds me how not to use a sword and shield. Or any weapon any larper uses.... they're always terrible. Both participants generally die like 3 times during each short. It's so bad lmao
