Btw if any newer EXO fans don't know, that "birthday" line Suho sings is often overlooked but it has a very special meaning. It's referencing one of 3 concerts they held in Seoul, in may 2014, for their very first tour. The first of the former EXO-M members had just ditched the group and was suing SM, just days after their Overdose comeback and 2 weeks before their first ever concert, and EXO members found themselves in the middle of a massive hate and gossip storm. During that concert, on Suho's birthday, the 11 members present celebrated with a cake and everything, and spoke from the heart to the fans. Suho, being the leader, was especially strained during this period of time, so I'm sure that moment had great significance to him, so much that it was immortalized in the lyrics.

Promise is a very precious and cherished song for us EXOLS because it's a song made by Lay, Chanyeol and chen helped translate it into Korean dedicated for their fans as an apology and promise to never again break their promise (slogan-WE ARE ONE) due to the 3 Chinese members who left the group and caused conflict and pain amongst the fandom. They will keep their promise of being together as EXO.
However eris don't blame EXO for the members who left the group because it's caused by the company for the lack of fair treatment, overly worked and biased when it comes to opportunities.
Ps. Even though Lay has left SM entertainment but he is still a part of EXO as clarified in his post in IG in his letter, hence keeping still his promise and in the past years he also didn't leave EXO regardless of all the countless and better Chinese company Contracts being offered to him, he refused all of them knowing he created this promise and now he has his very own entertainment company to run 😊
Sorry if I sound a bit petty but as someone who was there, Chen DID NOT 'translate' the song into korean ver.
the lyrics was FIRST written in korean by him because Lay was hesitant how to put out his messages
If you look at old exoluxion fancams, after performing the korean ver. of the song, tao even promised Lay to help writing the rap part for the chinese ver. (tao was a very talented rapper)
and if you look at 2015 exo chinese concert, Lay said "wait a lil bit I'm preparing the chinese ver. for it"
I bet y'all get that info from scarb videos but I promise it wasn't Chen who 'translate' them... Lay were sharing this song & ideas with the members & later Chen came to his room to help him for the lyrics

‘Promise’ is a song that you feel with your heart rather than listen with your ears. It is an open heart letter to a fandom who was reeling from the pain and confusion left behind after everything that happened. I myself wasn’t part of the EXO family back then as I joined in 2016 but I still feel the pain in the members’ voices. The lyrics break me every time because here they are apologizing for something they had no fault in and making such hard commitments to their fans while they were probably broken inside too! I really wish I could put them inside my pocket and protect them from all the haters. They really deserve all the best in the world ♥️
I am also fan of them from 2020 but when I listen this song it always make me sad all those emotions hit hard deep inside 😭😭😭😭 and I am also glad that I know them, they are really special for me LOVE YOU EXO FOREVER ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ That is my promise to EXO.

Remember that time, I cried with them while they sang that song in concert. It was a time when 2 members left the group 🥺 and they almost broke, coz almost all fans and non fans used to say that exo is failed group, they won't success. It was heartbreaking 💔

Yes its live is really really special. And i watched it particularly for chanyeol bcz i saw a clip and it moved me. Live has such an intensity that draws you in and it is like your heart is sinking and words are piercing your heart.

You are right, this is like a soundtrack, it is the sound track to EXO and EXO-L at a certain point in time. Every time I hear it I tell myself not to cry - then Chanyeol's rap hits and I'm gone. The vocals and harmonies are everything, soaring with hope and togetherness. We don't forget: We Are One.
Although I'm a new fan of EXO but when I know the stories about this song make me feel sad too..
Now, Lay isn't in SM anymore although still member of EXO, it make me sad again..

Honestly, by the time I got into EXO, it was already OT9, so I never felt that longing for the full group or went through the conflict of losing members. Even during their military service, I knew they'd be coming back. Even if Lay is not part of SM anymore, there are other groups that are still together even if the members are not under the same label. So I never felt the anguish of having beloved members disappear overnight permanently. I can imagine that OT12 EXO-Ls really feel this song. I was only able to understand the feeling a bit after watching clips of 2014 a.k.a. the Year of Hell. That, and Sing For You.

This song is a gift to us for the painful memories of that year and the fact that lay who composed the song and other exo members helped with the lyrics, this is a song that means a lot to exol
sad backstory aside, i really think this song is a masterpiece. i also love the orchestra playing in the background, which gives it a sadder sound, and even if you didn't understand the backstory, i think we can all agree their vocals hold countless emotions in this song.

Promise always and would always have a very special place in my heart throughout the years. Its a song that never fails to make me feel like crying. It's a very nostalgic song I can't help when listening to it but to remember ot12... They were good days I remember repeatedly watching EXO showtime during those times. The sudden departure of kris followed by Luhan and then Tao give all of us back then a shock but this song however gathered our confused hearts and both comforted us and give us strength to remain by EXO's side. I consider this song like a national anthem to Exotics and EXO-Ls. This song is extremely beautiful and important to us so I'm glad you reacted to it as for the music it would grow on you if you listen to it more.
I can't listen to this song without crying, let alone read the lyrics. Those hard times when we thought EXO was over for good but they said "no, we're gonna be here even if it's just one of us on stage" is what shaped EXO and EXO-L's relationship.

This is really a special one to all EXO-Ls especially to those who were here since 2012 for EXO, indeed it would always have a special place in every EXO-L’s heart.
And yes, Chanyeol’s part here really is very emotional. The reason why im thankful of him as a rapper because he raps his heart out and you could just feel it. All of EXO members are really great especially singing their hearts out, showing their emotions thru singing making you feel like you were part of it every single time. Gosh. So thankful i stan them.
