Lay, Chen and Chanyeol wrote the lyrics to this song. They dedicated this song to the fans to comfort them, to apologise that they did not keep their promise to stay as a group of 12. They asked the fans to not lose their trust in them and that they love their fans. This song was written after 3 Chinese members left. They knew the fans shared their sadness of losing their 3 friends.
Tao was still a part of EXO when Korean version of Promise was written and performed the first few times on stage. Lay even asked Tao to write the rap for the Chinese version during a ment one time; sadly, Tao left before that could happen, and Lay wrote the rap for the Chinese version, instead.
They really didn't had to apologise. If the 3 members had problems with SM, SM should be the one to apologise.

"Promise" was wrote and composed by Lay, with the Korean lyrics wrote by Chen (an EXO-M member) and rap by Chanyeol. It was created in 2014 after 2 of the Chinese members (Kris and Luhan) left and was released in 2015 after the third Chinese member (Tao) left. The song was meant to explain everything that happened to them in 2014 with the members leaving the company and "breaking their promise" to EXO-L to always be one. (EXO's slogan is "We Are One" -- one as a group and one with their fans. So, when the Chinese members left, the rest of the members felt like as a group they broke that promise.) It's an apology to the fans. EXO is saying they are sorry for causing the fans pain and for making EXO-L sad.
Everyone had a really hard time during this time period because everyone felt really blindsided by everything that happened and by the members that left because none of them ever said anything to anyone before they decided to leave. Lay, in particular, as the only Chinese member remaining, had a really hard time because he not only was the only foreign member now, but he had an immense burden with the fact that he had to straddle the line between his loyalty to his country and his loyalty to EXO and SM Entertainment. Lay has always been very grateful for all the opportunities that SM has given him in terms of his life and career, so he always wants to be loyal to EXO and the company, but he is constantly having to defend his loyalty and reassure fans that he has no intention of betraying them the same way they felt the rest of the Chinese members did. As the song says, EXO promises that they will always protect EXO-L and make them smile.
And now that the rift between Korea and China has happened, Lay has an even harder road to navigate because now he is no longer allowed to participate in activities with EXO because they are a Korean group. So he has been away from the group for more than 3 years now. However, he is still working really hard to make sure that EXO-L's know that his separation is not by choice. The only reason he is keeping his distance from the rest of the EXO members is because of the rules of the Chinese government, and yet, many people still see Lay's absence as a betrayal of his loyalty as an EXO member. So he is constantly struggling to prove people wrong, while also following the rules of the Chinese government, which discourage him from even mentioning his relationship with anything to do with Korea.
To navigate these roadblocks SM has found ways around them, for instance with Lay's solo promotions. Because Lay is not allowed to promote in Korea right now, SM found a way to promote Lay as part of EXO's storyline by partnering with him to release English songs and albums and to tie his MVs in with EXO's story. Everything EXO does, including several of Lay's solo releases tie into the fact that he is a member of EXO -- its SM's way of making sure that even though he might not be able to work with the members right now, that they still make sure to show fans that his storyline and presence as part of EXO is still really important to both Lay and SM.
But no matter what, Lay always makes sure to find a way to show fans that he is, and will always be, a member of EXO -- he is always supporting his EXO brothers, even from afar. Most recently we were able to see Lay back together with the rest of EXO when Lay came to Korea to be there for the day that D.O. enlisted in the military. He always works hard to remind everyone how important EXO and EXO-Ls are to him.

This song is very special for exo and exo L, after what happened in 2014-2015 this song gives us strength and hope. Exo has been dealing with hardship from the beginning of their debut, mistreated by their own agency, loosing members, prejudice from public, received a lot of hatred.
A lot of people thought because they’re from big agency they have privilege, they got silver spoon in their mouth, and they get their success easily. But nope exo struggle from the beginning till now, only a few people attended their first fan signing, they being paid with a bag of rice. Back then they named exo as the biggest failure of the agency, yet now they become the biggest money maker of their agency.

"EXO 2014" - PROMISE is the national anthem of EXO and EXO-L. It is a very special and emotional song most specially Chanyeol's rap.
Tao was still with them that time but can't go onstage due to severe injury. Kai is already crying during the performance and members burst out afterwards. My gosh, I thought I have cried most of my tears in 2015 and 2016 but still the same pain until now.
Don't Go is another special song for me as it was written by Luhan before he left. And Peterpan, most specially now that members are starting to have their lives as a man.

I also cried when I heard that song for the first time. It really touched me and got me where I can't hold my tears back then. It's really amazing how they put all their efforts for us and made us a song where they expressed their love, concern and felt sorry about the promise that they have broke. But it doesn't matter to me anymore as long as they're happy of what they are doin right now as a fan I fell they same way too. Suho said even there's only one fan will remain they will still go on stage and perform because that's what an artist do to pay all the efforts of their fans. I love them forever
