Big Shot Embossing Tutorial - Using Textured Impressions & 3D Embossing Folders by Stampin’ Up!

  • In this tutorial, you will learn how to use two types of embossing folders with your Big Shot. First, I demonstrate the Swirls & Curls Textured Impressions Embossing Folder by Stampin' Up! The Big Shot sandwich is the platform, a cutting plate, the embossing folder with cardstock inside, and another cutting plate on top. Roll that through the Big Shot or other die cutting machine to add texture to your card. Next, I demonstrated how to add ink prior to embossing. I used a Brother brayer which is listed in the supplies below. The second type of embossing folder I demonstrated is the High Seas 3D Embossing Folder by Stampin' Up! I showed the Big Shot sandwich which is the base platform, 4 sheets of cardstock, the 3D embossing folder with card stock inside and a cutting plate on top. Roll the sandwich through the Big Shot. Next, I demonstrated how to ink the embossing folder with a brayer. Then, I showed how you can control the amount of ink you add to the waves by using ink and sponges to color them. A full list of supplies used in this demonstration is listed below. I didn't actually show this new plate. Here is the link if you don't want to make a homemade shim. You would just need this ONE plate.

    Thank you so much, I never know I bought a 3D embossing folder, I could not use it and ask a Demo, she did not know how to fix that. You just make it clearly . Great video.

    Thank you for your tutorial. I recently broke one of my embossing folders. I research this all of the time and you are the first one I've seen that uses your regular magnetic platform. How wonderful to make this work without getting out a different platform each time I want to emboss.

      I’m glad you found my channel. I hardly ever show how to emboss but when I figured out this hack, I just had to share. Since this video, I have figured out other workarounds too. I’ve never heard of anyone breaking an embossing folder. I hope with this tip, you can tape it together with Painter’s Tape and keep on using it.

      Kim I ordered a new embossing folder as soon as I broke it. I have a bad habit of saving which I am trying to break so I tossed it immediately. I'm pretty sure it was beyond redemption. I was afraid I'd broken my Big Shot! It really warped it and it could not lay flat. LOL

      Thanks so much Michelle. I was even scratching my head when the 3D embossing folders came out and then I just played around with making my own shim out of several different materials. I settled on a shim made out of card stock.

    Great video. I use my old platform from my Big Shot, no tabs with 3D embossing folders and one cutting plate. You can also give the paper a Spritz with water for deeper impression. Have a great day!

      Oh yes, I do have spritzers too and so one of these times, I will show that. I can tell you are a seasoned crafter and it is so cool that you have the Old School platform. That is much easier than using my homemade shim. Thanks for watching.

      You get a heart for showing some love Anna. Glad you learned a lot. There is no right or wrong way to do things and I was just making some cards and decided to record exactly what I was up to today. This is such a fun community. Other people spritz water to loosen up the fibers but I mainly use spritzers when I'm coloring. So much to share. So little time.

    Thank you for solving the 3D folder issue. I just went to use the Evergreen Forest 3D folder and couldn't get it to work. I had to use 6 sheets of card stock and no top plate, only the bottom magnetic one. And yes, I still have the Big Shot. Much appreciate. Great job! P.S. Cute name: Papered Chef!

    I know Stampin Up use to sell a blue plate for embossing with the Big Shot. I have searched everywhere to purchase one. Can you help me or give me what sandwich for embossing if you don't have the blue plate.

    • @PaperedChef
      @PaperedChef  Před 4 lety

      Judy, Thanks for your comment. It means a lot. I searched for the blue plate and couldn't find it anymore. I remember using 4 sheets of card stock and one cutting plate in this video when using the 3D embossing folders. Not to worry, I think it will all be very clear soon. In August, Demonstrators can order the new Die Cutting & Embossing System (a new machine) and it will be available to customers soon after. I believe the cutting plates are already available now. Those are going to be labeled and so I will be able to easily describe the sandwich to make.

    I got a sizzix embossing folder today and i tried the sandwich with standard platform,cutting plate,embossing folder with paper and cutting plate and this worked but its cracking my card stock. It is my other embossing folders i am having trouble with it too lose i tried the 4 card stock as a shim and this did not work for me.

    • @PaperedChef
      @PaperedChef  Před 4 lety +1

      Jemma, each machine has a slightly different personality. If it’s cracking your paper, try spraying your paper first with a mist of water. We have a spritzer tool. Water loosens the fibers.

    • @jemmasheldon9842
      @jemmasheldon9842 Před 4 lety

      Thank you for replying I am new to die cutting and I will try the spray mist of water. The embossing folders I am having trouble with is the Vintage Swan & Rose Embossing Folder & Vellums Set its too thick as a sandwich and too lose taking bottom plate away i tried the way you did with 4 cards as a shim too lose. I had to use 9 cardstock as a shim and worked lightly.that's alot of card is there another way I also tried standard platform, thinlets adapter,3 cheap card stock, embossing folder with card in and top cutting plate and this worked but I am worried about ruining my thinlets adapter and hoping it not ruin my machine as its not instruction to do embossing folder with it. ls there any other way without using the thinlets adapter I like to follow the instructions but i thought I would try this. I did see on stamping up they do 3d embossing plate would this maybe help. I Do not know if the Vintage Swan & Rose Embossing Folder & Vellums Set is 3d so I do not know if this would help. My machine is three days old I got the standard plate and thinlets adapter with the machine

    Do you ever just spritz your paper before running it though the machine? I love this video and it explains perfectly how to get the textured paper colored...good teacher...thanks

    • @PaperedChef
      @PaperedChef  Před 5 lety

      Dolores Bennett Personally, I spritz when I’m trying to color. I use my spritzers with my ink refills and spray color on things. I find the tiny dots annoying and I like even coverage which is why I prefer a brayer for this type of coloring.

    • @doloresbennett1755
      @doloresbennett1755 Před 5 lety +1

      I mean do you ever spritzed with clear water? It has been mentioned elsewhere that spritzing with clear water will give a deeper impression to use for when no color is wanted. The brayer is a great idea!!! Have you ever used your brayer on stamps that don't want to take inking seriously? Very irritating. THANKS...

    • @PaperedChef
      @PaperedChef  Před 5 lety

      Dolores Bennett No, I’m not much of a paper spritzer but I have tried it and it does loosen the fibers a lot. I like my card bases to stay stiff so I don’t use extra water. Makes them warp too much. I use a Stamparatus for the stamps which give me a hard time. You can keep drinking and try again to get a better impression. Never be scared to experiment because it’s only paper.
