That Jesus had long hair comeback by Steinbrenner was hilarious
That was fabulous, 😂😂😂
Then I would have told him that I had. He would have to just believe.
I'd walk across that body of water purely out of spite
Dear Dixie: At 4:47 minutes: Was a blessed time for discipline where Georgey ruled the roost.
It's beautiful how he overcame the "movement" at the time:
Today, what would people say?
A new nickname would have probably been bestowed upon George, starting with R!
However, just like the BLM know where their bread is buttered, they need to comply with the rules by having their nose turn a different shade.
Lou Piniella was the one that said that even Jesus had long hair. Steinbrenner then said to Lou, “if you can walk across the lake, you can wear your hair as long as you want.”
For some guys it’s more than just “keeping their preferred hair”. Like with Brian Wilson, the Yankees probably never would have paid him enough to make up for the sponsorships and branding he had exclusively from his beard. He did, and still does, make a better financial living based off of it.
The royalties from all his old Beach Boys songs don’t hurt either
Wilson shaved his beard off years ago, so the "still does" comment is not accurate.
Before Checking for facial hair, find how much is his IQ points.
As a fan of hockey, I always appreciated how players shaved their faces clean at the start of the playoffs. The beard was a physical representation of how far they advanced. Now most guys have a full lumberjack beard during pre-season. Lol. I can't complain because I too have a long beard and most of my adult life have always been clean shaven or at least never let it get too much longer than a 5 o'clock shadow. I like that the Yankees have a high standard and maintain tradition but during the playoffs, they should make the exception. Grow the beards until you're eliminated or win the World Series!
It's not like they are going to look like Billy Gibbons by the end of the WS.
@@shrapnel77 Lol. True but I know there are some guys who had a full beard by the time they hoisted up the Stanley Cup. I'm wondering if anyone ever did a video on that. My interest is peaked now.
Who gives a fuck about facial hair it's not like they're out there making food for people
I actually did not know that
@@Taino13 I found out that it was the NY Islanders from the 1980s that started that tradition/superstition. They won 4 straight Stanley Cups back then.
Part of the reason I was glad to leave the military was to be able to grow my facial hair out. I personally don’t like any place with a (facial) hair policy like this unless it’s for health purposes.
Definitely a big reason I was happy when I graduated police academy they were big on no facial hair not even a mustache

I'm a huge Yankees fan, but I also think they should lighten up on the facial hair policy. I don't see anything wrong with the players having a well-kept beard. My dad's team, the Reds, used to a have a no facial hair policy too. They eventually started allowing their players to have facial hair & the world didn't come to an end.
Marge thought that people with facial hair were homos
Rollie Fingers was almost in jeopardy of losing his signature stache, but self sabotaged his odds of becoming a red by insulting her dogs
so the story goes
@@thedude3065 To say that Marge was a nutcase is an understatement.
Nah this the Yankees though boi
The Reds were different in a lot of ways, they didn't allow high stirrups on socks and made their pitchers bat even in minor leagues that allowed the dh.
Your Dad's team don't have 27 titles. Of course a lower wouldn't see anything wrong with a policy.

Awesome video, they arent the only team in sports too enforce this, life long yankee fan and new yorker lou lamerello, implemented this during his time with the new jersey devils and now with the new york islanders, also with nj, all players had to had a low number between 2-29 with goalies aloud to wear 1 and 30-35 as in his opinion high numbers didnt look good and were to personalized

The Reds had a facial hair ban up until 1999 when Greg Vaughn bitched about it.
Randy Johnson gave up the long hair in Arizona (and won a World Series against the Yankees shortly after doing so). It was more of a "gentleman's mullet" by the time he signed with NY.
Sounds like the military. I used to hate having to clean shave. I always have facial hair now because my face just looks better with it
Every other team in existence now has essentially no such requirement. I like the unique and unified look the Yankees always have. It's different, and it sort of brings all the players together. That's part of the reason the military still requires this even if you aren't in a job that functionally requires it -- it's because it's unifying. We're all on the same team type of deal.
And by the way, the Yankees will never have trouble acquiring free agents. Let's be clear here. There may be the odd player or two who refuses from time to time, but money talks, and boy do the Yankees have the money.
How is having facial hair not unifying? By your reasoning, having blacks and Hispanics in the military with whites is not unifying.
Not enough money for Judge…
Well beards and facial hair is a superstition for alot of players look at Joey Gallo for example no facial hair sucked ass then facial hair boom starts being Joey again and also I believe yankee organization is soulless and it takes the MOJO out the every player that comes there
@@lightgrove7751 pretty much, get that money judge and grow out the dreadlocks

Call me crazy, but as a Yankees fan I legitimately believe this is one of the reasons we haven’t won shit lately. Let the players be themselves. Nearly every player grows their facial hair in the off-season. Who knows how much it affects the mental of the players positively or negatively
? yes blame it on the hair.......... are you a teenager?
I think its a sign of pride, work ethic, self respect. There a reason our military is #1.
with that said. if u dont care about winning, pride, self respect. yea go with whatever u want. go out there like Cam Newton.......lol be urself worked great for him.

Even before beards got popular the playoff beard was always a thing
@@FastDuDeJiunn The only reason the military has it is because of gas masks won’t seal properly with a beard. Beards show masculinity and some players have refused to play for the Yankees due to the rule.
@@FastDuDeJiunn our military is number 1 because of $$$$$$. We spend the most and have the nicest facilities, best gear, and are the best. I hardly would be vain enough to say that the Korean military or our European allies aren’t disciplined, they just don’t have the resources we have
@@FastDuDeJiunn No the reason our military is "number 1" is cuz we spend billions of dollars into it for resources

Also funny how Montgomery immediately grew a beard once he was traded to the cards
he was free to be himself, he became relaxed, appreciated and accepted.. IMMEDIATELY.. something he mentioned he was concerned about in Yankee stadium, fans booing him.. however he comes here, gets encouragement and even compliments to the Medusa about how he is helping. .
Q flourished also, he was given a start in the wild card series, because he earned it. He was able to earn it, because the cardinal fans appreciate and accept the players, they appreciate they are giving their best and that they want too. they can fail at times and be concerned about not be booed or discarded, the players feel encouraged rather than demonized.
That can make a huge difference mentally, day in and day out.. thoughout the season. it can be draining.
I mean think of the players, they are doing their best... when on the road, they don't get booed at other venues... yet.. when in front of their own, so called, fans they get booed or heckled.
it's the one thing I've notice that is different with this fan base in stl.. to be genuine,, the fans base is more tolerate, acceptable and understanding that the players are doing their best, errors happen, that gives a chance to learn. eventually you get to the point where you recognize that mistake in the moment it is happening, then make the adjustment.. it's what makes championships, recognition and development, in a nutshell.. just sayin..
@@dRumpfsadouchebag "It's what makes championships?" The Yankees have 27 world championships to the Cardinals 11 (only 3 in the last 50+ years). I don't think your reasoning holds up too well.
@@Bern1808 I don't think facial hair affects championships lol...
and plus they Cards are the most successful team in the NL.. Yankees overall.. plus the Cards have won twice in the last 20 years.. the Yankees have won 1 time.. so for newer fans the Cards might seem more successful ... both fans from both teams have the right to talk about championships ... very different from a Mets or Indians or Padres fan lecturing about winning lol
@@cadian122 facial hair doesn't make championships, but unity does. That's the main point of the rule. You play for the Yankees, not yourself. It's also why they're the only team who don't put their names on the jerseys.
@@hinney827 yeah I hate that too
Makes the jersey look plain and stale ... I don't even dislike the yankees.. I just don't like the policies
As some one who spent time in the military, grooming standards SUCK. It gets to you more than you’d think, sometimes you just don’t want to shave and get a clean cut, you want to have an identity but this kinda removes it from the equation. That being said I do understand the professional image aspect so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Who even set the standards for a "professional look " they make literally no sense at all
It's not just about the professional image i suppose. As you hinted, you wanted to have an "identity" and stand out. That's not desirable in the army, where the collective is far more important than the individual.
Plus, i think there are also hygienic aspects why they want you to remain shorthaired and clean-shaven.
the country is changing with Sikhs and muslims who keep beards to observe the sunnah. as will the corporations
I used to be in the Army and ever since BT I got a shaving profile due to how bad I break out no matter what and even as a Warrant Officer later on I still get flax about it from others. The customs can be a bit redundant but I understand the root of it. The only real issue is that you get judged harshly even when you have legit reasons.

I'm a fan of beards but would definitely shave it for millions!
True, but if the Yankees are willing to spend money for your services, chances are at least one of the other 29 teams would also be willing to spend millions on you too. If I were an MLB player, that rule would dissuade me from signing with them, for sure

Andrew: Thank you. Classic. The brand is respected all over the world.
Other private clubs have dress and appearance policies...e.g some tennis clubs require "whites" shorts and shirts. The YMCA requires appropriate dress on the indoor running track...i.e. no shirtless runners. I personally feel the self expression desire of some of the players in the league has gotten out of hand.
I totally understand it for Military and First Responders, for the fire volunteer department while i was still respirator certified i couldn’t have any facial
hair that affected a seal so you weren’t allowed to have more than a mustache, when i do a test yearly for the EMS respirator a beard doesn’t interfere so it’s allowed but not for the test so i shave the beard yearly but keep it neat year round, if they ordered me to relive the beard I’d go down to a mustache or clean shaven again, if my job asked me to be clean shaven i would unless like you said in the video there’s a ban on forcing people to shave, however i don’t see why ballplayers & athletes these days need to be clean shaven but should not look disheveled and sloppy, as for long hair depends how long some NFL players hair is way too long if the name on your uniform is covered or some can grab your hair to make a tackle it’s way too long 😂
2004 Redsox are the polar opposites of this. Think every player on that WS squad had some kind of facial hair.
Mattingly!!! Shave those sideburns!!!
-Mr. Burns
What sideburns? You heard me hippy
Love this old fashion stuff. I'm sure these lawyers will get involved
I don't see it changing cause no one will challenge it. Great video though.
As outdated as a lot of people think this is, it sort of reminds me of Alex Ferguson’s club blazer rule at Man United, where everyone would get off the team bus before matches wearing the same club blazers. It enforces the idea that no player is bigger than the team, and I think that’s a good thing
“It May limit the Yankees ability to sign new players”
As a rangers fan I can confirm it has NOT done that
Great video.
(Ralph) Houk is pronounced, HOWk
It was a Steinbrenner thing, not a real Yankee tradition. I’m a Yankee fan but probably in the minority believing that the team’s grooming policy is stupid. If it was a league wide policy I’d have no issues with it. And I’m a former Marine and retired police officer who lived through strict grooming policies for more than half my life.
So you wouldn't have an issue if was league wide but it's stupid because only the Yankees have it doesn't make any sense at all either you like or you don't.
@@philrichards9232 I think basically hes saying its fucking stupid that players cant have facial hair because of a fucking dude from the 70s. However, if it was a league rule for a certain reason, he would be fine with it.
@@philrichards9232 shut up
@@philrichards9232 u clearly missed his whole point. It's better to make a uniform standard across the league then to be the only team to have the requirement. Making dishwashers wear thick white dress shirts is bad. But if everyone in the restaurant has to wear them, it doesn't make it as bad.
@@philrichards9232 I agree with you. These other people are deluded, hypocritical ignoramuses. Steinbrenner wanted to showcase the classy character that his organization embodies, to lead by example. The Yankees hold themselves to a higher standard. If you want to wear a T-shirt and sweatpants to your job on Wall Street because you think you have a right to, go ahead and try. You want to wear a graphic T-shirt to a 3-Michelin Star restaurant, go ahead and try. The Yankees are a cut above the frey. They are different because they hold themselves to a higher standard, and players who want to don the Pinstripes choose to accept this gesture of austerity as one more way to delineate the Yankees' distinction as an elite professional sports organization. It is not ostentatious and showy, rather it is a symbol of selflessness, team unity, and dedication to the dignity of the game. This is what Pinstripe Pride is about. This is also why the Yankees never put names on their jerseys. If you don't appreciate the Yankees, nobody cares. It's only your loss.
Good video
AT 4:46 you implied Lou Pinella was traded away for not cutting his hair short. I have that same baseball card shown, and its a card when the KC Royals traded him to the Yanks in 1974, which it says right on that very card. He also stayed a Yankee till his retirement in 1984 at the age of 40. Later managed the Yanks too from 1985 to 1988. He left on good terms with Steinbrenner.
Some team should make a policy that you have to have long hair and a beard.
Go to San Francisco. They are weird there.
Charlie Finley paid the early '70s Oakland A's to grow mustaches and let their hair grow. Rollie Fingers took him up on the offer and his handlebar 'stache is the stuff of legend. By the way, the A's won 3 straight World Series. They were united by two things...their facial hair and their hatred of manager, Dick Williams and owner, Charlie Finley.
Hey man! Just giving you feedback since I see you have a small channel. Talking a lil faster, will probably get you a higher retention rate! Interesting topic, but it is quite slow. Hope that’s helpful
Islanders also have the rule under Lou Lamoriello :) Doesn't apply to playoffs though
Part Of Legacy & Tradition Which Help Sales Tickets & Uniqueness As A Franchise
I hope that they always keep the policy. It's about discipline, and team standards that apply to everyone. Crazy hair, and beards make it about the individual, and their ego. The military does it for good reason, and it's effective.
It's an idiotic and outdated policy. You can allow facial hair below the lip while also requiring it still to be well groomed. Beard trimmers exist. Beards don't mean looking like ZZ Top
Sounds more like a cult. Didn’t bother the military none prior to the 1900’s.
A policy is a policy. If you don't like the policy of the Yankees, then go somewhere else. It's like any other rule in baseball, you cannot argue with the umpire if he calls a strike a ball...you can shout your heart out until you collapse, the umpire won't budge. It's like that...
I'd be fine with getting rid of the hair policy. But I hated giving out the 0 to Ottovino. I have no problem with other teams doing it, but it conflicts with the brand. I think the hair policy is outdated and a change would no longer conflict with the brand.

Why the F would they care about players growing and displaying facial hair? It's a natural thing for men, and it's their choice to wear facial hair if they want to. A player wearing a beard does not affect how they perform as pro athletes.
The incident between Sweet Lou didn't happen at a pond. It was at a swimming pool.

The White Sox have a a similar thing with both hair length as well as facial hair length. Multiple players dating back as far as 2006 have been told to cut their hair and trim back beards and goatees. Nothing as ridiculous as the BS going on in the Bronx. But ask Joe Crede, AJ Pierzynski, Dallas Keuchel, Jose Abreu, and possibly Johnny Cueto about it?
next would be "Why Yankees spent billions of dollar without a single World Series appearance since 2009"
I think it show your dedication to the team over yourself . Kinda important in a team sport
It's time to end Steinbrenner's absurd ban on beards. Not only is it jarring to see guys like Cole, Damon and Gallo without their trademark beard, but it's questionable for a wealthy white man to tell his minority players what they can and can't look like. If I'm an AA or Hispanic player, I'd challenge the ban in court. Nobody in the private sector should have the authority to prevent grown men from having facial hair. Besides, the majority of ball players look far better with beards. It was downright frightening to see Odor and McCann without one....
Awesome
I've always liked the rule. It makes the Yankees feel different sort of unique to other teams and I actually find it interesting to see bearded players traded and then shaved. Felt like Johnny Damon turned over a new leaf. 😆

And Yankees of all races have had to shave due to the rule. Literally nothing about race. Not everything is about race. If he were racist he just wouldn't hire black players.
@@davruck1 In 1973 Steinberner made the rule and specifically listed out Bobby Murcer, Fritz Peterson, Thurman Munson, Sparky Lyle and Roy White to be shaved among others. You can look them up and see their skin color for yourself. As a Yankee fan and a guy who hates to shave regularly, I must say any player who refuses to play for the Yankees due to their facial hair policy is crazy. The Yankees are always in the hunt for a ring. The ring should be the goal. Johnny Demon shaved and now he has a ring with the Yankees and Boston.

The Yankees aren’t the only team to do this. The islanders implemented it in 2019 when Lou Lamoriello became president of hockey ops. They get rid of the rule for the playoffs though
Hockey is the reason I believe players should keep beards. Tradition works both ways. No playoff beards are a shame to any sport, it adds so much to the story of the team and the season they are having. Imagine Lebron having to cut his beard cause the lakers said so or Messi has to shave cause it’s distracting. It’s a joke
