- I have ridden a 2014 Honda CBR500R quite a lot so I was very happy to get the chance to try the 2-year newer CB500F! If you are looking for an A2 bike as a first bike this is close to perfect!
Big thanks to Andy Sills in Southsea, Portsmouth.

I've got a 500x so agree that its a great engine. Yes its not exactly powerful, but for a commuter/town bike it really can't be beaten. Great combination of reliability, fuel economy and power to zip in and out of traffic.
0:52 seconds and I crossed "I'm 6'4" off my spicy bike review bingo sheet. get in!
I have the '22 model in grey. Despite having a full A license I figured that this was all I needed, and I love it.
Makes sense to me!
@spicy110
Can see your number plate
For divi just in case you didn't know
I've ordered a '23 model in grey and I too have an A licence! How are you finding yours and how do you like the colour now you've had it for a while?
@@tf9888 I agonized over what to get for quite a while, and I'm sure that I'd love whatever I picked, but it really is fantastic. Covered around 4000 miles so far, mostly just commuting.
That rumbly twin motor is characterful yet smooth, and I prefer the feel and the handling of it when compared to the X and the R (both of which I tried out).
Everybody I speak to likes the colour, though my father calls it 'shiny primer'.
One thing to bear in mind, I fitted some R&G crash bungs after I got it, but a few months later one of the mounting bolts sheared in half, and it was a total nightmare to get the remnants of the bolt out. It was very strange as I hadn’t dropped it or anything. Definitely would not recommend fitting them.
@@just_say_when3445 oh that's interesting about the R&G bungs as I was going to get the dealer to fit them - I guess maybe I should consider some SW Motech crash bars instead? What are your thoughts?
Thanks for sharing your experience, it's great to speak to someone who made the same decision as I am making!
I have a black 2019. On full license. I often think about getting a quicker bike just because I can but then my brain kicks in as I’m not using anywhere near the full power of the CB most times, it handles perfect and the mileage is insane.
I’ve got the ‘22 model - love it. Looks good, rides great and has a bit of ‘go’ without being scary - perfect as my first step up after passing my test.
Excellent as always.
I've not ridden a cb500 but I did ride the 500 rebel which has the same engine and you are dead right, it's an absolute peach
I looked it up and we can settle the debate right now, Honda calls it Lemon Ice Yellow. So you, Mr Spicy, are correct in calling it yellow.
good to see my bike gets the Spicy seal of approval, those rust spots are the exact same on mine
I’ve just bought one of these and it’s brilliant.
Cracking bikes ,we were looking at these for my missus for when she passes her CBT ,she loved the look of it but she preferred the CB500X only because it has a more roomy riding position.
I just bought the rebel cmx in red 2023 , the reason I bought it was the difference in weight from my virago 750 , it’s about 45kg lighter than my virago , and it’s probably faster on pickup and top end speed, the brakes are good with the ABS , this is the first bike I have had with ABS , and it’s got better stopping power that the twin disc front virago , I did have to put a all in one seat and forward controls on it for my disability, the petrol consumption is good to , I am averaging 67 mpg , but the virago is more comfortable to ride and that’s the only thing that I miss on my rebel , the lights are good and I was doing the same thing as you with the horn instead of the indicators , this rebel is definitely a good bike for someone who wants a lighter bike .
Had an old CB500 back in 1998 just after me beloved CBR400RR got nicked :-( (worst feeling of my life!!) I bought it off the bloke how I did my direct access course with and it was actually the bike that I passed my main test on.
He's used it as a race bike in the CB500 class and it came slightly tuned and with a race can, and by god do they sound amazing with a race can!!!
After that I used it as a dispatch rider around central London for a year, and all over the country. I did 40k on it and then chipped it in for a faster bike. I think it was a GSX600f??
Any hoo, it was one of the best bikes I have ever owned, and was one of the reasons my mate John got a 600 Bandit, because I said, next to the CB500, his old Honda VT500 sounded like "a sewing machine on speed" 😆
I can imagine the new one are pretty great too, considering how long they've been around
Man I loved my VT500, despatched it round the clock from brand new. Sensible slim shaftie, why don't they make shaft drive 500's anymore? Had a couple of CB500's as well, and more recently a CB500X from new to 55k when I sold it. It's pretty much the perfect go anywhere, do anything bike.
My cb500f is the 2016 in red. I've owned her for 2 years now even on a full A license I've no notion to change so far. I've got her mileage a little high now (pushing 28000) and still just adore it. Think it was around 14000 15000 when I took her off my other half... I do sometimes look for another gear, but apart from that, I have not really felt I need more. I ride all year round so I do battle odd areas of rust as you pointed out, but actually, it's very little and now I use acf50, it's very manageable. One day I might take bits off and give them a new coat of paint, but it's so minor, I prefer to just ride her and do what is necessary and not stress it.
BTW... Yellow with a hint of green is what I think that one is too 😁
Its raining here today and you've made me want to go play on my bike... I don't mind riding in the rain, but I hate getting her uncovered and unchained in the rain so now I have itchy feet 😂
Great video as usual. Could you please explain how much power difference do you notice with the this motorbike and your xj6 and what differences are there with regards to the power and how you ride it? Thanks 👍
sweet ride .🎉🎉
I have to agree, a very good bike, and the engine is great - I liked my 2018 model but I didnt love it, so I test rode a Z650RS which did everything better except the engine isnt as smooth so I bought one of those and I love that - obviously not A2 compliant but I think you can tell the difference between the chassis as the F is a lot older design - still very good though and having ridden one, I would recommend it
Mixing up horn and indicators on the Grom. Happens to me all the time.
i bought a 2018 with similar mileage, despite having a full A licence for about a year. locally these don't come up very often, i ended up going 100 miles north to Donington. i was still fairly happy with my YBR 125 custom but having something i could go further if i ever get around to bike camping, and i can knock a bit of time off my commute on the dual carriageways. for me its quite a bit bigger than the 125 and im just getting used to it, at 5'5" i can get my feet down, not quite flat, i've added a Givi windshield and it really helps at those over 50 speeds
I have a ybr125 - fun around town. Looking at the CB500f as my next bike (once I pass full). Seems a great all-rounder. I bike camp as well (wild). Seems like I shan't be disappointed with the bike! Woo.
I love the bright color ... we need more bright colors for bikes imo.
Agreed, although everyone (at least around where I live) seems to go for a black bike with all black gear. I'll never understand why some riders insist on making themselves as invisible as possible.
@@Mr_Smith1327 i mean one reason why riders insist on being as invisible as possible is cause they do all the illegal things, but other than that, they might just love the look.
Just getting interested in bikes again ,got my cbt and theory test in a few weeks then going in for a das ,,I’ll be looking at something like this or 400 ninja .Not ridden a bike in over 30 years so don’t want some rocket ship type bike ,need something that’s just fun for taking out for rides in good weather and enjoying the experience .I’m about 6 foot and thin so will be looking for the bike that feels right ,tbh I’ll class myself as a beginner again as it’s been so long ,last bike was a Suzuki x5 200 cc if anyone remembers them ,I’m 58 now ,dream bike ad kid was the Yamaha lc 350 ,so it’s a different world now .
Still can’t tell if it’s highlight yellow or like green 🤔 excellent review as always! 😊
It’s nearly ripe banana yellow! Or should be if that isn’t what it’s called. 😂
I am working towards my test and I am not sure if I would ever want more bike than that. I have my 125 (ish) Varadero and the only thing that appeals more is a Kawasaki versys x 300.
I can see that 650 is better value and more abundant but the extra weight seems pointless if speed is not of the essence. I can pick up a lighter bike when off tarmac and man handle it better in muddy conditions. A2 looks like all I will ever need. Is speed a disease that gets worse over the years?
Fluro yellow but I am colourblind.
I got offered 2015 Model with 33km mileage for 2k$. Should i take it?
Always liked the cb500 but i fancy a 90's one with the bikini fairing on it
Can't beat these engines for high mileage. My 1999 race bike has 70k miles and it still rips 😂
I had an ex CB500 race bike too, that was back in 1999 as well 😛
@@Drobium77 they're awesome little things 😎
Hi Spicy,
I’m 37 years old and was riding abroad since 18.
I’ve passed my theory here in uk and going for CBT soon.
Could you advise if It’s OK to buy 500cc bike and restrict it and ride with L plate until I go for my A licence??
Thanks
No it is a max of 125cc on the CBT.
Im looking to downsize from my bandit 650 to one of these because it costs alot too run and its unnecessary quick for british roads 😂
I have full A license , it's not worth to get the CB 1000cc ? This one has enough power and good fuel consumption ?
Imho 1000cc bikes are boring and pointless on the road. Unless you use it on track your just going to short shift everywhere.
I passed my A2 on a cb500f a few weeks ago. Very fun bike.
And I agree the horn is stupid. I hit the horn about 5 minutes into my mod 2 lol
This bike is identical to the bike I did my A2 license on. As a tool it's a great bike but it is incredibly dull to me.
Same colour as the spicy logo right?
Na, mine is a much greener color. 🙂
So I don't get involved in the colour discussion I am going to watch in black and white.
Then you have to say is it a grey grey or a darker grey grey lol
1:51 are you sure? It looks red to me😂
jeez, I'm colourblind, couldn't really care what colour it is
Good bike but a bit small and no top end for motorway
It easily picks up to 170km/h, that has gotta be enough for all roads, no?
Its an old bike so not for me.
