    As someone who’s been “using straws” for almost 2 years this blew my mind. I’ve never fully got on with them and found a lot of the time I actually become more strained after using them. Turns out the whole time I’ve been using them incorrectly and making a whole load of volcanos or cutting off the air flow entirely. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in this video 🙏🏻

    I'm not usually into vocal warmups (I just pick a really easy song to start with range-wise so that'll be my warmup) but I've had acute laryngitis for two days but am contractually obliged to to two more gigs tonight and tomorrow. This exercise cleared up about 80% of the areas. I can dodge my way out of the rest. Mission accomplished and thank you!

    Questions! (I'm only working on the first part so far)
    - Should we narrow our mouths to funnel the air? I find it tough to stop my mouth filling up with excess air keeping it relaxed.
    - Should we work our way down with straw sizes? Should I start with regular straw, or a boba straw, before trying with a narrow juice-carton straw?
    - Is it typical for lower notes to be more troublesome? I find I'm making the lower notes without making bubbles!
    - Is it typical for the voice to cut out when vocalising blowing bubbles? Regardless of bubble situation.
    - Should we concentrate on keeping resonance in the chest, or focusing sound to feel resonance in the lips/teeth while doing this? I find my larynx wants to do all the work.
    Not sure if you still check these comments but thanks in advance if you do! (Or maybe someone else here has the answers?) :)

    Great exercises - I have been singing professionally and learning for 20 years now and never with a straw, but I remember doing similar exercises without the straw blowing air into my hand at the very beginning, so definately see a relationship and a benefit when it comes to breath control and the support & concentration required to achieve it.
    I will certainly be looking at this as I start teaching. Thank-you!

    • @hitomburke
      @hitomburke  Před 3 lety +6

      Yes. That's due to how the vocal tract and our vocal folds interact at the passaggio. You can override this with practice. If you are interested in the acoustics of this phenomenon, check out Kenneth Bozeman's book: Practical Vocal Acoustics.

      Hi Gary, the goal isn't necessary sustaining phrases or minimizing breathiness (which may occur), the examples here are to assist with reduction of vocal effort. Refer to the Journal of Voice and research on "semi-occluded vocal tract exercises" on why. In Bel Canto terms, this is about reinforcing the reverse megaphone position.

    This does not seem to be a helpful exercise for singers who experience dysphonia. I did this exactly as prescribed/described yesterday. No volcanoes. And I can’t even produce vibrato today. I have to push so hard to get sound out, and often air comes out instead. I was in much better voice yesterday. I have to cancel my studio session today. My suggestion is to find other more gentle ways to help with dysphonia as this could create more damage even when doing it correctly.

    • @hitomburke
      @hitomburke  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Maggie! If you're experiencing muscle tension dysphonia, first check in with a Laryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor who specializes in voice) and then work with a speech-language pathologist who specializes in voice disorders to help ensure you are doing the exercises in an optimal way. There may be some precursory exercises that will help you. Best of luck.
