      Idk about Atlantis, but I wouldn't amaze myself of archeological finds, particularly in macaronesia or the mid-atlantic ridge.
      There's a semi-legend account that the way the Portuguese explorers knew there was land to the west was because of a statue at the westernmost azorean island, with a man on a horse pointing towards the setting sun. Supposedly the statue was dismantled and brought to the mainland, but lost somehow (I can't really remember how)
      There are also proof of former human ocupation on the azorean islands, and it is suspected that Madeira and Porto Santo also were inhabited by the same bronze age peoples as the ones in the Canaries.

      There are a theory that Atlantis was IN Portugal. They never found Atlantis because it's always assumed that it was in the middle of the Atlantic, But one theory says that it was in Algarve. The two proofs that they claim, is that if you follow the directions that Plato write, you reach not a point in the middle of the sea, But Loulé, in Portugal mainland. But if you look for a place with all the geographic features that Plato wrote, the only place in the world that check them all is Faro (very near Loulé). The crazy part is that in that area there is archeological ruins of a very advanced culture that no one know who they are. And we know nothing about them. And a few kms North, in the region of Évora, there are the most ancient megaliths in the world. So we know for a fact that that region have some of the first ever advanced human civilazation. If they are connected to Atlantis we don't know, But if we ever found out the real Atlantis, a think no serious antropologist will be amazed if we found out it in Portugal. Don't ever forget that some of the ancient civilazations where born in Portugal, and only after that went to other parts of the world. Nowadays we already know for a fact that Portugal is the birth place of the Celts, and some even say that Egiptians where also born in Portugal, But after that went to Egypt. Not proven, But some strong evidences of that.

      It is a lot more common to see Azorean and Madeiran seperatists. It's even funnier to see those same seperatists asking for more money from the central goverment for the yearly budget and saying "But we are also portuguese!" when its convinient. Because their economy alone can't support their costs. The reason why both have a low GDP compared to the continent is so they dont become self suficient, cuz if they do, the first thing they'll want is underserved independence.
      Personally I've always seen them as Portuguese and despise the seperatists, specially Madeirans here in UK. They ALL speak as if they were independent, everything that's done or made in Madeira is the best in the world and you can't argue. They flaunt their disctrictal flag around as if it was a country, when passing by their stores and pubs i've had friends asking if they were romenians or from "any of those southeastern european countries".
      Back at home, I've never seen anyone saying the islanders weren't portuguese. They make jokes about them and their accents, the same way Alfacinhas shit talk about Tripeiros or how everyone shit talk about Alentejanos and how slow they are.

    Portuguese person here. I want to correct you on some things:
    1: Other countries have expressed a certain disdain towards Portugal's sea expansion plan, with some legitimacy: Portugal does not use its sea riches currently. So why expand their territory if they won't use it? I as a Portuguese man obviously resent this, but what can you do.
    2: Portugal does *not* want to distance itself from Europe. In fact, what we want is to shift our policy and economic module to fit a good role in the EU and make our money that way. And we've found a lot of success recently: Portuguese wine has long been a national symbol and has become a very good business for us, the Mar-Portugal scheme intends to use minining underwater resources to have good economic power within the EU, and the biggest project of all is our energetic growth project. This literal powerhouse intends to make Portugal the world leader in renewable energy tech, with staggering success: Portugal's energetic consumption is 55 to 60% clean, renewable, national energy, and we predict full self-sufficiency by 2030. Afterwards, progress will still be made, and the raw energy surplus along with the tech to make that energy will be sold on the market. For Portugal, saving the climate is a necessity: Ecologically and economically.

      @F. L. Literally every single person in Portugal who cares about the country wants the sea expansion. All political parties here, from fascist to communist, are united in the sea expansion scheme (yes you heard me right: This project has brought facists,, communists, and all points between together).
      The only problem is the UN, who looks increasingly like they will deny the request, if they haven't already.

      @F. L. The politicians are more concerned in blaming one another on everything but talking about this plan

    • @zap3231
      @zap3231 Před 4 lety +11

      @F. L. Portugal has a strategy of open political and economic neutrality. This means that we try to please everyone, but we do not isolate ourselves from the world, like Switzerland.
      This has a few consequences. We're allied with both the US and China, we're in the EU, and we try to serve everyone's interests. China's One Belt One Road initiative has, in Portugal's view, potential to bring Europe and Asia closer together, therefore we decided to support it. But China is a divise topic in Portugal. Not between political factions, but between economy and politics.
      I personally ardently support distancing ourselves from China. Economically, Portugal cannot distance itself from China. The liberalist system in place in the world makes it so we have no option. Politically, we have to distance ourselves from China, because Portugal has, since 1974/1975, promised to itself never again accepting radicalisms such as fascism and communism.
      Here's the thing though: Europe is not ready to take on China, even with US support. This is why we are forced to appease China instead, resulting in the unfortunate result of being dependant on China.
      So what can we do but sit and weep? We're already debt-trapped, but not by China: By everyone. Align ourselves toward China and our politics suffer. Align ourselves toward the West and our economy suffers. And we can't make our own way either.
      We've already taken some pretty bad hits by liberalism: The entry of several Eastern European nations into the EU attracted multinationals that were previously making their money in Portugal, leaving us with few companies to cooperate with. As a result, lately, along with most of the rest of the world, we've had to enter into trade with China, due to their attractive market.
      A possible solution is state intervention, sort of like a Portuguese New Deal, which would result in, in theory, the Portuguese government ditching reliance on multinationals that abandoned us and attempting to incentivate its people itself. This is being seriously considered lately due to the COVID-19 pandemic's economic impacts. The 2006-2012 economic crisis was solved with heavy austerity and it's a solution not many Portuguese people are looking to do again, therefore our center-left government has publicly said, and I quote our prime-minister on the comparison of the recent economic crisis and the next one, "It was a bad solution and it would be. We need to relaunch the economy, not a long period of austerity".

Anyway, if it’s there it’s not going to run. About US, well, at least internally I don’t see what could they do or even why should they care...

    • @gordusmaximus4990
      @gordusmaximus4990 Před 4 lety +3

      @Christian Bai neither. The Azores got its autonomy thanks to the autonomous movements of the Azorean political class, intelectuals, rich man of the XIX century but was suppressed by long time by Portugal, specially with the fascist dictatorship that came later. But dont want to bore you with history lessons and such. Anyway the key part of the movement wasnt independence but "the free administration of the azores by the azoreans" which was a right won after the carnary revolution of 74 (but there was also a independence movement that reached its peak at 75, one of the reasons Portugal granted the Azores autonomy was because of that movement, but again, dont want to bore you with history lessons) So that means, part of Portugal, there is tthe Republican goverment (the goverment of Portugal) and the Azorean goverment, the Azorean goverment takes care of theadministration of the azores, while matters of taxes, military and international affairs is to the goverment of the "Republic". In a way its like a american state to the federal goverment relationship. But the Azores recently even had a office in the EU to fully represent them and the Azores as other european island regions or nations have a "special" status in the EU known as the "outermost regions". And the population despite all, see themselfs as Portuguese, sure maybe Azorean first Portuguese second, but even for people who think like that, most of the time, the "context" of being Azorean is being Portuguese, but with its own culture and the unavoidable isolated insular character and culture.
      There are some fields the Portuguese goverment cant mess with the Azores, only the Azores deal with that, but others is the Portuguese goverment who deals with it. And according to the constitucion (which contratis itself) Portugal is a "unitary republic" which makes no sense because it has its own autonomous regions. Now currently, there is a small "crash" who should deal with the sea of the Azores, if the Republic goverment or the Azores, the constitucion doesnt exactly say, there is a grey area, that is why the Azores want a constitucional reform, and to grant more powers to the Azores (for example, letting create Azorean political parties).
      But yah, put in short, the Azores are autonomous, have its powers in which the Republican goverment cant touch, but in other fields, being part of the country, the Portuguese central goverment is the one who deals with it, the Azores have the Portuguese flag and its flag, but in internacional things (like its airplane company sata) the Portuguese flag is the one desplayed.
