More information about the video content bellow:
    1. Graubünden or canton of (the) Grisons is the largest region in Switzerland, making up 17.2 % of Switzerland’s total land area. Graubünden is also the most sparsely populated region with only 196,600 inhabitants - Switzerland has 8 million in total. The varied mountain scenery has approx. 28 inhabitants per km2, so you’ll be sure to find plenty of open space to test your skis on untouched powder snow or enjoy a relaxing hike in peace and tranquillity!
    2. The Grisons was once a territory of Rhaetia, peopled by Celtic tribes in pre-Christian times. In 15 B.C., the Romans conquered the Rhaetians, began colonization, and built alpine roads. The Germanic Franks entered the Roman provinces in the 3rd century and established themselves along the Rhine. The people of the upper valleys of the Rhine and the Inn were isolated enough to resist Germanic influences, and today they still cling to their ancestral tongue, Romansh -- the language of a third of the Swiss living in the Grisons.
    3. The peasants of this canton banded together in 1395 to form the Ligue Grise (Gray League), from which the name Grisons is derived. Two other such leagues were formed in the area to oppose Habsburg domination. In 1803, the three leagues formed a single canton, which joined the Swiss Confederation. The belief system of the Protestant Reformation, however, was adopted by only part of the canton, and today sections of it remain staunchly Catholic.
    4. This sparsely settled, easternmost Swiss region is very mountainous and contains 225 sq. km of glaciers. One-fifth of the canton's total area is covered with forests. The region contains the sources of the Rhine. Juf, at nearly 2,100m above sea level, is the highest permanently inhabited village in the Alps.
    5. The Grisons was one of the last regions of Switzerland to benefit from busy commerce with the rest of the country. Cars were forbidden on all roads until 1927, and even today it's illegal to drive cars in Arosa after nightfall. This ban on the use of roads helped to popularize the Rhaetian railway, whose narrow-gauge trains cross the region along hairpin turns and through dozens of tunnels. Today, this railway, as well as the postal buses that crisscross the district, provide panoramas of a harsh and sometimes-bleak landscape.
    6. Chur is the capital and largest town of the Swiss canton of Grisons and lies in the Grisonian Rhine Valley, where the Rhine turns towards the north, in the northern part of the canton. The city, which is located on the right bank of the Rhine, is reputedly the oldest town of Switzerland. Archaeological evidence of settlement at the site, in the Eastern Alps, goes back as far as the Pfyn culture (3900-3500 BC), making Chur one of the oldest settlements in Switzerland.
    7. Johanna Spyri's worldwide bestseller «Heidi» has lost nothing of its magic to this day. Heidi symbolizes the values of home, truth and good deeds, and she has been doing this for 120 years. Heidi belongs to Graubünden like the ibex, the Romansh language and the world of Alpine adventure.

23andme indicated I have DNA from Switzerland. It pinpointed Grisons as the location. I had never heard of it prior to that result... now I just want to know who left and WHY?! It's so beautiful. Very interesting information. Thanks!

@@WillardFortune I wonder if we match? The population is so small. Doesn't seem too unlikely. If you have a Cathy Hamad anywhere on your list... that's me. But yes, it's fascinating that they can tell us such specific information...and it's nice to run into someone else who is interested in exploring the history/culture/etc of their results. I am curious.. if you don't mind me asking... did you connect to Normandy as well?

Interesting fact: in Graubünden there's a german dialect shared with the people from Vallais, called "Walser"-dialect. It's almost as special as Rumantsch or Ladin. There's also many similarities to the german dialects of Voralberg etc.. the alpine regions tend to be rather.. nationally independent in their culture.
Your video series about Switzerland is very solid and neutral, mate. Well done. You even mentioned the "Gotteshausbund," and the "Grauer Bund" etc., liked and subscribed!
Edit edit: Thanks for glorifying Grisons that heavily, we need more tourists ;)
