CHOLO 18/21 WHEELS - WHY YOU NEED AN 18 REAR!!!

- Cholo deluxe gets some fresh wheels from DNA. The 52 fat spoke wheels with black rims/hubs and chrome diamond spokes. In this softail film I illustrate the differences between a 16" rear wheel vs an 18" and why the differences can affect the quality of the ride of your bike.

It’s cool that people of all backgrounds appreciate the Chicano culture and style. I’m from SoCal and style is second to none there. You’re bike is badass, I’ll give it up to you brother, it’s nice!
Fantastic. Your whole series on how you've set up your cholo softail has been incredibly helpful, so thank you sir! Before you started creating these videos, I couldn't find much on youtube in the way of information/guides for cholo builds. These videos have answered a lot of questions. Can't wait for the next one.
Thanks, that's really awesome to hear. I felt the same way. Most videos were cell phone walk-arounds which offered very little info or reasoning for their decisions. So I thought I'd try to offer that in my films.
So far it seems to be very helpful to many, and I'm grateful of those who comment like you did, telling me that I was able to help them.
@@JETFILMCHANNEL SO helpful John. I've been loving these videos. Like you said, nobody was making these about cholo builds. If they are, I can't find them. I'm going to buy a stock 2007 deluxe and give it the whole treatment. It's awesome to have some guidance for this process when you don't live in Southern Cali. Not too mention that the production value of your videos is second to none. REALLY great footage acquisition, editing, post, and audio. So nice to see a professionally produced video. Great work my man. I work in the media industry too, so I recognize great work when I see it.
I just found your channel and I can’t believe the quality and the level of detail you go into!
I’m just about to buy new wheels and everything you find out there is for factory looking donut wheels!
Think I’ve just found my new favourite H-D channel!! Love the viclas, got a club style Softail myself but very much like to have a deluxe as a second bike. 😍
Beautiful ride. Great video and presentation. Love your laid back style.
I love the black on white color scheme. Classy and outlaw simultaneously 🎉
The best style of Harley Davidson👍🏻
Love it!
Just picked up a 2015 deluxe black n silver, I appreciate the info, I’m in NY as well, luv your bike bro, keep posting 👊
You are so talented and have the best Cholo! I can’t wait for our next ride together.
Fresh upgrade! Looks badass brother! Thanks for posting these videos - GREAT production value indeed!
Thank you!
I changed my 15 to 18 rear, 19 to 21 front. Love the ride.
My wife just surprised me with a 2013 Softail Deluxe for my birthday with intention of doing a Cholo style build. Just ordered DNA wheels a couple of days ago and this is making me think about changing my back wheel order. If the extra 2 inches helps with lean angle, I'm in. Awesome bike! Love it! I can't wait until mine is finished!
That's one hell of a birthday present. The 18 helps with a number of things including the lean angle. And the way the game has evolved an 18 rear is pretty much the new standard for a full build, and soon I think 23's will take over as the standard for the front.
@@JETFILMCHANNEL thanks for the advice. great videos, btw...and very timely for me!
@@JETFILMCHANNEL and yes, my wife made it the best birthday ever. She was able to keep a secret for over 3 weeks (which is unheard of for her :) )
Awesome bike and production!! Thanks for sharing!!
Love the way you edit your videos excellent work keep it up.
Dope H-D Vicla & video! You pointed out some great info as well! Oh & the music you use in the background is the icing on the cake! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🏍🏍🏍
Your vids are incredible! No one else like you on CZcams! Keep up the fantastic work! Can’t wait to see more vids on the cholo. I’m making my road king cholo and love the tips and reviews!
Thank you, more to come for sure. Good luck with the King.
I love the look of that bike. Great video thanks for the info!
Super clean! I dig you videos and ideas 🤘
The black powder coat on the wheels is a nice touch! I'm just over the border in CT with a 2007 and the same color scheme. See ya on the road!
Appreciate your videos. I have a 2000 softail and that is the Direction I'm going with my bike . Great video.
Thanks man, glad the videos help. More content on the way
I love the colors black and white, the white walls, the fat spokes cut like that the sun will make them bling! I am gonna get 2021 Road King do the same way I can't wait! I was gonna get a softail, but i need a touring frame for long travel with the wife. I am gonna keep my dyna for now to run around town, but when I get to building the King, you can't love two bikes ones got to go! lol
I'm doing this awesome tip for my 2002 Heritage Softail.
Great video and info.
You'll be glad you did
I have diamond cut with 16 now im rethinking.love vid bro
Great vid. Gorgeous whip. Bikes got a lot of soul.
I love this style of HD's. This and HD 8obbers are my personal favorite HD Custom Styles. Peace, Stiletto :-)
New sub here. Bike is super clean. Editing is on point to. Much love from Australia
Just found your channel while looking up some cams for my Blackline (go figure that I end up here by that search). Anyways, I have been in the market for an older road king to Cholo out, and damnit, now you have motivated me to start spending some cash again... LOL, anyways, thanks for also adding in where you got things from, they have came in handy already for things like my brake lines, Grips and wheels. Already ordered all three for the Black line (Not Cholo, but for this build the links you have supplied have been beneficial, but will also help when the Road King comes this spring). Keep the content coming and keep up the work!!!
Cleanest self built vicla keep up the good work
Thank man, more to come
Do you recommend an 18 on the rear of an 01 that already has a smaller frame (road king)
It's personal preference, especially on the road king. You can run up to an 18x4.25 with a 150 tire. I just ordered my second set of wheels for my road king and for the second time I ordered it with the 18 rear.
Not sure if the frame is smaller on an '01, I know they made a swingarm change. You could always do an 18 with the vee rubber lower profile tire for the extra clearance. But as long as you set up your suspension for the type of look and riding style you do, then you shouldn't have any problems. Maybe the occasional fender rub on the most extreme bumps.
By far bro amazing build !
I left 16 on my bike and slammed it. Looks very cool with my vintage HD solo seat and long fish tails. Springs on the seat makes for a comfortable ride. No wheel scraping problem. Full white walls too. A classic style.
I also have 16 for the classic look front & back. U cant beat the wide whites on both. 21 front just has the tiny stripe. But i like the 21 look too just like both 16s better on my bike
Great Bike Info... Thank You!!!! Keep The Videos Comin'!!!!!
Just found your channel. Great film work and your bike is badass, too.
I normally skip right over the ads, but I let yours play out. Anyway to pay it fwd for producing this content for us, I’m on it. This is how you CZcams..
And yes, this series has motivated my build to now mirror the Cholo style you have educated us on.
Big ups to you and your film crew, John.
Thank you, much appreciated. I'm really glad people like the content and the way I present it. More films on the way!
And film crew? That's news to me
🔥🔥🔥🔥production is top notch
Nice sled, I stayed with a 16" in the rear on my 97' FLSTC, reason is I thought it would require more modifications for fitment. I dig it either way...
I have done the 2” in the rear and the 39” Samson’s. I scrap in every turn! I’ll be doing the 18” rear now! Thanks! Oh and I have the 21” dna on the front and love it! You have some of the best info for real life on a Cholo!
Thanks man, that really means a lot. And thanks for watching the vids
J.E.T. FILM yeah you make it easy to watch. Great quality and great content. Love your bike too. Hope one day soon mine is as nice as yours. Keep up the great work!
Thanks, what you see in the videos is 3 years progress of mods and re-do's/failures/parts that didn't fit-etc. But little by little it comes together, and it still isn't finished.
J.E.T. FILM yeah I’ve been on mine a year and totally understand. If it don’t fit the style no matter the money spent it gets gone!
Your edits are dope af!
Just stumbled upon your channel. The production on this is great. Super clean vicla homie 🙏🏼
Thank you!
Man I really like this video. Im making my heritage into a cholo and LOVE the look ur bike has. Very clean 👌. Stay safe brother
Can't wait to take it for a ride.
New York here too! Dutchess and Ulster counties. Pot holes can be killers! Especially upstate where I ride.
Looks awesome 😎👍🏽👍🏽 and great video
Great look. I am going to do 18 on my deluxe soon, but as I find out the 18inch wheel and tyre will lift the ride height only 10mm if I go with stock shock. The tyre wall on 18 is shorter than 16 inch tyre, that the reason that the lift is just 10mm.
Thanks for your video
Damn, it's nice when a plan comes together, looking good
Thanks Dan, the plan is still in the works
Beautiful bike love upstate by has some of the best scenic road for riding
Exactly what I needed to see … excellent video.. wow .. perfect
Wow looks nice brother! I was thinking same thing even before you said it 18” side wall white looks better and match the front 👍
Gorgeous bike! Thanks🍺👍🏼
Another awesome VDO..👍
That's a nice looking Vicla!!!
Man I can’t wait to cholo my Road King, I been watching these videos for a couple weeks now and my money is burning a hole in my pocket 🤣 I can’t wait to drop it on the bike!
Hell yeah. The Kings look awesome when all Cholo'd out
dna is just a 10 miles away from my house. they got great products been using them since 2010.. and my buyers love them end up having one on my deluxe also...ride safe bud!
I dont know about their other products . I do know DNA springer forks are garbage.
DNA has crap products dude.
Great video bro!! I have a street glide on air, 26" wheel, 9down/14back comp killer bags. Scraping definitely at cool on custom painted bags! Lol I want to build a cholo so freakin bad for more of a "daily" bike.
Cool enjoyed a informative video to improving these aircraft carriers.
Haha yeah, they can be complicated to get just right
Sick bike! Love the way you mesh your videos. Great song choices too. Born Of Osiris \m/
Thanks man, I appreciate the good vibes. Got another film coming soon, its a complicated mod. Taking forever to finish
@@JETFILMCHANNEL hell yeah brother! Can’t wait to check that out! I just bought a black 07 deluxe myself. Just in time to sit for the winter lol! Which mean the cholo build begins! Thanks for the insight and the awesome videos! You’ve got a new friend just over from you here in Ohio.
Lived in Cali all my life; home of the Harley Vicla. They are useless in our canyons but they’re great at 25mph down Whittier Blvd. or parked in front of a bar. I’m not hating, just been around them all my life. The 18” rear wheel improves the lean angle but lowered bikes ride like hell; had one. The Dyna is the way to go if you ride hard and love canyon riding.
I've been watching you build your bike and you're doing a real good job filling the bike at the cholo bite that's awesome brother especially for you live at and getting the parts horny somebody like you would do this which is awesome God loves
18/21 is probably the most aesthetic combo. Just keep the widths reasonable. 90-120 on the front, and 150-200 on the rear. And if you really want to go carve instead of cruise, drop down to a 19 on the front and it'll still look pretty damn good. If you want a big wheel, try not to go past 23 for several reasons.
EDIT: So what you were talking about with the white wall thickness made me think about how 16 vs 18 relates to the front, and particularly how older bikes were handled back "before" they had low profile tires. And what I realized was 16/19 has the same stagger as 18/21. So theoretically you could go with a 16/19 setup and higher profile tires, get TWO fat white walls, lighter wheels, and an overall softer ride since the extra sidewall provides more cushion.
Just poorer steering feel and turn-in, I guess. At least that's how it works on cars.
looks great
Love and Respect to you Carnal!!!!!
But remember the proper and real name of these bikes are called VICLA's. This style surged from the RAZA, AKA Mexican Community of East Los Angeles, Ca. which is identical to the lifestyle of the Lowriders. They are meant to have horses when you need the punch and have style to cruise the BLVD. and represent just like lowriders.
The term "VICLA" originates from Spanish words "Bicicleta" or in Mexican slang, "Vicicleta", which means Bicycle!
"CHOLO" is the rider not the bike and is slang for gangster. CHOLO's are the creators of this style not the actual bike.
Great Video, anyways.......
So what's your experience with a 23" in the front and why did not choose to go 23"?
With lower profile tires, they fit without modifications . Performance is almost the same except you need to watch out more for pot holes...even though you already do that with 21's LOL!
Cheers! CARNAL!!
Always look forward to watch the cholo videos. That’s one mean looking and sounding vicla 👊🏼😎
Listen cat that is one sick sled for real !!!!
I run a 23x3.5 front and a 18x3.5 rear , lower 2 " In the rear & 2" front on my widow maker cholo
Dude powerline cycles is the best for lacing and truing up wheels! We should ride before the seasons up
NICE RIDE! i took care of the scraping with an air ride.
Same here, about 5 months after I made this film
Looks bad ass 👌🏽👍🏼... Bang💥Bang💥
Great video and bike looking cool as shit. I am actually installing my new king spoke fat spoke wheels by Ultima today 21" and 16" rear onto my 2004 Heritage and can't wait. Maybe I should have gone with an 18" in the rear but also like the look of the fat white wall as well. But I do have a question. What do you use on the chrome spokes to keep them shiny and protected? Thanks
Nice ride, how much clearance do you have between the tire and your belt drive when running a 150 and 3.5” rim?
Fuck I got Samson’s because of you now I need DNA wheels too, wish you made more than one video a week! Always looking forward to next one!
Looks great man -- I put my 21 up front, lowered my front 2", need to reassemble -- I ended up with a 16" in the rear still need to install. I think you got the last Avon WW rear 18" tire in the US hahah -- be safe man bike looks great!
It wasn't easy to find, and I ordered it back in May. Try ebay, its amazing what you can find
I'm running the shinko 777 HD wws nice looking ww tires, softer rubber but for the price, and they ride really nice
@@JETFILMCHANNEL I seen one on eBay for $1,300 smh hahaha
I seen some on a site for 399$ but they ship from Australia 🤦🏻(avon)
I love your bike you did a great job . If you have the remote ajustable for your progressive shock turn it all the way in put a line on it turn out 7 full turns or to your liking the bouncing will go away
Thanks, I don't have the RAP but I can adjust it manually. Tried tweaking it a few days ago with minimal difference. Im going to give it another try.
@@JETFILMCHANNEL hi bud, did you try this as suggested, I was thinking -2 on the 422s is only -1” from oem on the Deluxe due to the reduced shock length in this model compared to say the Heritage?
That's a really good question, I actually didn't know the answer to that so I googled it and read some forums.
Some say the height difference is due mostly to difference in tires and seat, others say that the rear shocks are actually different or modified to sit higher.
What I do know is that my deluxe rear end dropped 2 inches when I lowered the 422's all the way.
That leads me to believe the difference is in the seat and tires.
Got another question for you brotha. Sorry bout that. Btw thanks for responding to the last one.
What size tires are u running on front and rear ?
I was told to go with 90/90 in the front but sounds like a very thin tire. Was looking to get your input on that. Out here in Cali I’m having a hard time getting my hands on a tire for an 18” rim😡😂.
sweet bike man , sorry that i can only give you but one thumbs up :)
Hahaha thanks bro
John. Big fan of your videos. Question. what sweater you got on ? Part #
Thats a nice looking bike. I never like new stuff but thats a great looking ride. But its still not a panhead! Then again you got electric start and I gotta wrench on mine a bit.
Thank you, definitely not a panhead, although I truly respect the mid century harleys.
Nice dude badass
Damn it , im convinced now .
life is short, buy the damn bike
No doubt about it, these cholo bikes are pretty cool.
very cool, you can also run a 4.25 rear 18" rim using a 130 70 18" tire which makes the tire lower profile and will not rub if and when you install air suspension.
Thanks Yank, since this film I did install air but haven't had any rubbing with the 150. But it's nice to have options. Saw you on "tales of a king" a few months ago, you definitely know your stuff.
Thank you brother I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work
What size tire are you running on the rear with the pickard 140?
150 70 18 avon cobra
I got the wheels and ready for the cholo package they got but they advise to fit a 140 , I’m really set on the 150/70 18
What is the little kickstand for balancing by the rear rim/exhaust?
Looking to Adding mammoth 21x3.5 and 18x5.5 on my Dyna Fat Bob. I can only mimick a cholo as much as I can on a Dyna. Specially a fat Bob. But I’m thinking the spokes, apes, and maybe V&H big radius chrome exhaust
SICK
U damn cholo are awesome bro love ur viedo keep it coming bro, past on that knowledge Brother .
Hi John , can you get an dual exhaust with a M8 motor or do you need a twin cam. Regards Chris from Australia.
Cool; thanks
Fuck yeah bro 🤘🏼 bike looks sick!
It’s really good work bro. So can I ask you question please? What is best tires for the DNA fat spokes and what size best company are the tires? Thanks 🙏
Depends on the size of the wheel and if you want to have a whitewall
Awesome video, awesome bike!!! Are they carlini gangster apes 16”?
Thanks, yeah they're the gangster 16's
Hi.Beautiful motorcycle. Can you tell me how much one cost, and where can I find more Harleys so I can see the price? Thanks a lot.
Awesome video I just got the same wheels from dna painted the same way but 18 3.5 front and rear wheels....what size tires did you go with front and rear and what brand? Thank you and you have a bad ass bike!
I'm using avon cobras. 150 70 18 and 120 70 21. I'm over 12k on the front tire, still going strong.
I wish I saw this a month ago when I ordered my 21/16s! Lol I guess I’ll soon have a 16 for sale... waiting another month for them to make my 18 is gonna kill me. Great video!
J.E.T, sorry to bother you again, do you have a video that shows lowering the 2” when putting 21” in the front? I found the one with the going lower than two. Or where could he find this information? Thanks again!
I dont have any films about the initial drop. I'm sure that there's something on CZcams about it. I do however recommend the progressive monotubes to lower it. That's what I'm using and they're great.
Bro, have you thought about getting both your fenders stretched ? Custom seat ? Maybe some engraving on your chrome ?
Yeah, so I'm doing the rear fender this winter. Im probably going to keep the front stock since i truly love the stock front fender. The seat is a Lepera. And no engravings, just not my style. Custom paint job coming soon though, when I get the fender
I have a stock 1996 Heritage. Just starting the Cholo process. No immediate plans to do suspension. Would you still recommend. 18/21?
bro, I dont know how this video came across but I'm glad it did. I have a 2015 sportster 72 with a 16/21 and I wanna change to a 18/21 fat 52 spokes. my bike doesn't have abs. what do I need to change or look out for if I go with the 18/21 set up. I dont mind the white walls being a bit thinner, I think it looks way better. thanks. badass vicla by the way 😎
I really don't know whats involved with doing an 18" in rear for a sportster. But I'm sure that kind of info would be easily available on the forums.
A common issue for many with the softails/dynas is axle size. Harley changed axle sizes for different models in different years. So def pay close attention to that.
As far as ABS, its cheaper if you order wheels without the ABS bearings so you'll save a little money there. ABS bearings are usually around $35- 50 per wheel.
Good luck with the wheel change
@@JETFILMCHANNEL thanks bro. I'll let you know the outcome and share my experience and project. ✌
Love the build✌🏼 was the simple green a certain one ? Or just simple green couldn’t see bottle. Love my wide whites cleaning them is a drag.
Its called "simple green wheel and tire". Think I found it in home depot.
J.E.T. FILM Thank you
That watch is clean too.. what's the brand??
How tall are you and how tall are the Carlini bars? Sorry if you mentioned it in a previous video. Im looking do a similar build. Thanks.
Nah, its cool. Im 5'10 and the bars are 16" with 2" risers. There are other things that affect angle of your arms too, besides bar and riser height. The thickness of the seat, and the suspension in the rear are 2 big factors.
Did you move the wiring harness to the corner of the rear fender? I got air ride on my fatboy lo and not even slammed my tire tore up the wiring. I put it in the corner zip tied to the strut bracket. Solved the issue. RAD cholo dude. Well done.
In this film I hadn't touched the harness yet. Transfered the harness when I replaced the rear fender but I ran it in the same place as the original design, which runs along the top corner of the fender. Haven't had a problem so far.
You may have had a one off incident. A rock stuck in the tread followed by a hard bump and it may have caught the harness enough to tear it up
I know that dirt road under the Taconic bridge. Beautiful bike, one road I would not ride on with that bike. 👍
Ahh, nice to see someone local. Open road just doesn't film as well. And I like the infrastructure over there
Dollar tree Awesome and 0000 steel wool works great as well for those white walls.
Thanks, good tip
