Sadiq Khan confronted by caller 'left destitute by Ulez'

  • Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, joins James O'Brien in the studio to take calls from LBC listeners. One mother, Sarah, accuses the London Mayor of leaving her in ‘perpetual debt’ because of the Ulez charge, saying it takes up all of her disposable income.
    Sarah explains how she's been moved to temporary accommodation and where previously at the end of the month after bills, she had £300-£400 to spend, now every single month her finances are “wiped out" almost straight away because of Ulez fees.

She needs to sell or scrap the car (even if she dont get much for it). and Start getting the bus (or train) to work.. and after several months with the money she saves she'll have the money to buy a second hand ulez compliant car ..or afford a deposit on a better flat/house share so she can reduce her cooking bills. It will take a while to see the benefits of ULEZ in terms of public health. I don't dispute the negative repercussions for those economically vulnerable. But ULEZ is to benefit the most health vulnerable people in particular (but also everyone). There is a bit of overlap between economically disadvantaged and living in polluted urban areas, where negative effects on health are accumulated. Just like poorer people are exposed to more mould in homes etc. So ULEZ is there to help both health vulnerable and economically disadvantaged. It is doing so but effects won't be miraculous and immediate so it's hard to prove it.

    I love the way James says, ‘slung out of your home by your landlord’… as a landlord who has seen my interest only mortgage triple plus getting taxed on the gross income, it doesn’t surprise me that landlords are selling up. Sadiq Khan then says later on that it’s the government’s fault that people are getting evicted. What people seem to forget is that being a landlord is a business like any other. The purpose of a business is to make money. If that business isn’t making money anymore, it shuts down.
    Landlords get out of flack about increasing rents and things like that, but successive governments have imported millions of people, built a fraction of the houses needed, changed the tax laws and hiked up the interest rates. The rent that I charge is going to have to go up from £400 a month, three years ago to £700 a month, and I can absolutely promise you I’m not making a penny more profit. In fact, as I write this, and I think about what I’m actually making per week, it really isn’t worth it.

    Although I don't live in the UK anymore, if this poor lady sells her current car to pay off her car loan, then she is left with no car, and no money because of paying off the loan. How exactly does the scrappage scheme then help her to acquire a ULEZ car, since she has no car left to scrap. I would assume that she can't afford to lease a car, because leasing is for new cars, which she certainly can't afford. None of the advice offered really helps her out here.
    I read people saying she brought this on herself for making poor decisions, but she didn't make the decision to loose her home via the Section 21 imposed upon her, which forced her out. 14 years of brutally uncaring, greedy Tory mismanagement, chaotic disastrous leadership, the highest inflation within 40 years, massive increases to energy bills, and policies that aren't intended to help people when they most need it. Policies that have only lined the pockets of the super rich and massive corporations seem to have led to this dire situation for so many people in the UK, just like when the Tories held power for far too long back in the 1980s.

    • @theclocker7406
      @theclocker7406 Před 4 měsíci +3

      Of course I did. It would appear you're assuming she bought it brand new? Seems pretty unlikely, I'd guess its a used car, and we don't know how much it cost her or when she bought it. She may have bought it a couple of years ago for all we know, for let's say for 4K, and still has 3K left to pay. So if she were to sell it now based on that, she may only get say 3250 for it. Of course this is purely speculation, but it would seem to be a far more likely scenario than still paying off a high end model she bought brand new 18 years ago. Most people don't generally keep the same car for 18 years. Either way, this still doesn't answer my original question of how the scrappage scheme would be of any use to her after she sold her car!

      Yep, I was in folkestone. new housing development is purely for ex Londoners and commuters, not local workers or subsidised social housing. It's either 4 bed townhouses for commuters or 2 bed luxury apartments for townies, all at 300k plus, when average salary is like 22k

    ULEZ is an offer to participate, not an order. You agree to participate by creating a "road user account".
    Do not register yourself as a "road user" to participate in "road user charge" scheme.
    There is no law that force "a driver" never mind "a man" to participate in the ULEZ schema, or any Clean Area Zone anywhere.
    Once you registered as a "road user" on a private corporation website you agree on terms to use "complied" vehicle. Euro3 for petrol and Euro 6 for diesel is only the start. Once enough number of people are registered as "road users" they will introduce the payment for usage of the roads on a wide country basis in a moment of a switch for any type of cars.
    Do not get into the trap of "road users".
    Do not comply.

    Not in London in my case, however, I've fallen between those cracks where there's no help available to you until you reach a point of poverty and desperation from which there won't be an escape, even with the help that suddenly becomes available only once you're in crippling debt. Once you fall into debt and poverty, escaping it is practically impossible - it's a miserable trap which, without significant changes to how benefits are paid, and to whom, and without changes such as rent caps, and price caps on essentials, is inescapable, particularly for those who cannot work.

    This is a classic example of how out of touch most politicians are with day to day folk. Telling someone they can pay off two cars at the same time when their situation is dire. ULEZ is an obvious tax grab that has pushed this person over the edge, who was already teetering. The kind of person Labour once represented. And, worth noting. It's more environmentally friendly to drive a car until the end of its usable life than to scrap it and buy a new car or even another used car. The elephant in the room.
