  • For former New Haven, CT's Wilbur Cross High boys' basketball coach Bob Saulsbury, induction into the hall of fame is a long shot.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA, includes only three high school basketball coaches - Ernest Blood, Morgan Wootten and Bobby Hurley Sr. - all with more than 1,000 wins each and multiply state and national titles.
Not to say coach Saulsbury's stats aren't pretty impressive.
During his 28-year career, Saulsbury, 94, won 497 games, nine state titles and his 1973-74 team was voted the best in the nation.
And after six years of rejection, Saulsbury's loyal former players, friends and relatives still are determined to see him enshrined. They believe it's not only Saulsbury's on-court basketball achievements, but his positive influence off the court that warrant his induction.
Supporters say he was one of the most respected and successful coaches in Connecticut history. Saulsbury, who also taught special education, was a mentor, advisor and a father-figure to many city youths, supporters say.
Described as humble, kind and compassionate, when recounting his success, Saulsbury always credits his late wife, Ilene, his players and especially former Cross basketball coach Red Verderame, who first gave him the chance to coach more than 60 years ago. "I've been blessed," he said recently.
