My name is Dr Tom Micklewright, a Medical Doctor working in the NHS in the UK. I have not received any financial compensation from any of the apps in this video, so this is an independent video.
I used clinical guidelines produced by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence to inform this video: cks.nice.org.uk/topics/cough/ (accessed 6th March 2023)

Me too
Very helpful video
This is a good video thank you DR. But they so many people here saying that they have been coughing for many weeks, months and some years and they're asking what they can do. Please lovely people who are asking have you seen your doctor? If not why don't you go NOW it's not too late. Get well soon as myself waiting hospital appointment. My Doctor decided that I should go and see the Respiratory specialist here we go
I have had my cough nearly 2yrs and and my Doc sent me for x ray and it was clear and then checked for asthma but Dr Tom was the one who told me it was the acid reflux. Thank you Dr Tom 😀
Ive had acid reflux since I was 12yo and I'm 69 now. Wow
@@jeandavis8700goddamn
Wow me too been having a dry cough 4 months been to Doctor X-ray done, antibiotics given . Still cough! Tried everything, awaiting hospital appointment. By God's grace all will be well.
Am tired of this cough, I don't smoke
Hi, how did you get rid of it?
@@user-io8yu8gv5eIt is pain I feel u
Thanks for all info fr uk
I had a chronic cough for several weeks. I was also having a difficult time breathing. I am a pretty active person who runs and exercises on a daily basis. I went and saw the Dr. He told me I had exercise induced asthma. I disagreed and explained that my coughing and shortness of breath was happening as I was there in the examination room. He sent me to have a chest X-ray and it was negative. I still had a difficult time breathing. Two days later I was in the hospital with severe Pulmonary Embolisms. I was in the hospital for a week. I almost died. I never thought my issue was that severe.
do u still have cough? how to stop it?
I hope you feel better do you smoke?
@@sakibhasannShe posted she was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism….clots! So most likely on antithrombolytic medications (blood thinners) ranging from pills to injections. The coughing she experienced likely ceased post treatment of the pulmonary embolism.
Correction: “He”. Sorry about that.
thank you for clarification this could really help people.t@@wineinmysparetime1919
I have had a chronic cough since 2012. Getting ready to do all the tests again even though in the last round nobody had a diagnosis. I have downloaded an app to help me track my cough.
*not a doctor, just an idea* Maybe consider if you'd might have an allergy to something - pollen, dust, some detergent, some ingredient that you started interacting with when the cough started. Wishing you well, have a great day :)
For anyone that has a cough and it just won’t go away, look for a good organic colostrum capsules or a powder and take them twice a day for two or three weeks, then start a good 7 mushroom supplement. Try to find one with the 7 different mushrooms all in one capsule. Take that for at least a month or longer.
@@waynefoote3781 Never smoked. This cough stayed with me after a bad bout of sinus infection
For over ten years, I had a cough that mainly started after I had been up a few hours. I went through tons of tests and the drs concluded that it was acid reflux. I had been on reflux pills for years, and it did nothing for my cough. Then, after a series of events that caused me to think it might be caused by dairy, I gave up dairy; and, my cough went away!
WOW! Glad that worked.
🎉Thank you!!❤❤❤❤
My 8 year old son has had a cough that hasn’t gone away for over a year. Chest X-Rays came back normal, asthma and allergy medications have been ineffective. He coughs all day, every day. We’ve now been referred to an entomologist, pulmonologist and allergy specialist to see if it’s a food allergy. I’ve told my doctor many times that I suspect it’s GERD, but she brushes it off and continues to speculate that it’s post nasal drip. It’s been a nightmare. Can’t wait to get to the bottom of this.
look up dr weinberger
I’m in the same boat with my 6 year old 😢
it could be how he is eating. foods can effect inflammation.
what about milk or food that he may be allergic to? I am not a doctor. I wish you all the best...maybe detergent that you use for washing clothes or soap? Good luck to you.
@@waynefoote3781 Lemon and garlic are both triggers for acid reflux even in adults let alone a child! Hope no one takes your terrible recommendations.
If you take blood pressure medication and have a dry cough, please have your dr adjust your medication to a different category. I’ve taken various meds for 27 years and had been on one in particular for at least 10 years when the dr increased it to the maximum dose. I had had a respiratory infection prior to the cough and it never went away. Took ME a few months to question the med. I had 5 cracked ribs, was vomiting every morning and using a pillow over my ribs when I coughed. 9 months of this! Told dr to change it and within 2 weeks the cough was better. By one month it was gone. My father also had it many years ago. Dr told me this can happen ANYTIME, even if you’ve been taking the medication for 20 years! My father had the same problem.
I have a wheezing cough which always give me hard time to breath which medicine I can use to prevent it continues because doctor says it is allergy
I have had a cough a blocked nose in the morning and at night for nearly 2 year . I am so over it . I went to see a specialist he tells me ,I have turbinate in my nose and that's causes my coughing. I am on a waiting list hopefully I will stop coughing after I have a operation.
I got fussed at for waiting to talk to my doctor for 3 weeks after a cough. She wanted me to come to her right away and threatened to put me in the hospital if I didn't get better in a few days after she gave me 2 inhalers.
I had a chronic cough for a year,I read about gabapentin ,for it and lord and behold, it went away
i have been coughing for 2weks now and today wake up in ribs pain upper back and lower front everytime i cough too uncomfortable and very painful
Look up suppression of coughing and try it. It’s a therapy for habitual coughing and it works.
Happy face 😊 Doctor 😊
What is your recommendation for coughing from blood pressure medication (amalopine)?
I’ve had acid reflux too. And I have a cough because we had no heat for 2 weeks
Can you get a high temperature with post nasal drip?
I have had a cough for about 4 or 5 years
I been coughing for almost 3weeks nonstop my throat is ticklish my daughter and son had it to. With me its constant and only stops when I am laying with my head raised up : /
I always have cold and coughing and I need a help please.
This is me since I caught covid in April 2022 I've had a cough on off since then I definitely think it's acid reflux and postnatal drip I feel it dont take any medications except multivitamin which I stopped awhile back great tips.
My coughing went away 80 percent when i stopped smoking cigarettes.
thank you Dr tom, I have tried it, the doctor, it turns out that I feel a change, my cough is cured❤❤❤❤💘💘💘
I have had cough for six years, I don't smoke I even got for chest x-ray but it was clear, I see somany drs but there's no answer, what can I do now?
Has anyone told you that you resemble Dr Bashir in the Sci Fi series Deep Space 9 ?
Like this video straight n understandable.... After watching this video my cough was drinking n smoking with a loser 😢
I have been coughing like 2 weeks I have a headache coughing everytime and leads to fever
Non tuberculosis mycobacterium
How can i see your video on stop smoking
Hi Delphine, try the link here: czcams.com/video/A5cyNsytV8k/video.html
Mine is always in the morning along with phlegm for a couple of hours.. I live in a farming community so I've resigned myself to allergies.. any thoughts? I run a humidifier in my bedroom when I sleep at night.. seems to help I'm in COLORADO
Maybe it's bronchiectasis
What about someone who has had this cough for more than 8 weeks, never smoked
It’s good to see advice from a medical doctor. It seems that most of the medical advice on CZcams is from chiropractors and they’re not medical doctors. I’d rather get medical advice from my dog’s vet, than a chiropractor. This is the first time I’ve seen this doctor. I usually watch Ken Berry MD.
Glad you think so 🙂 Let me know if there's anything specific you think would be useful to cover. I'll be posting more content over the coming months...
I like to seek advice from many various sources. Most doctors are owned by Big Pharma except for a handful. Chiropractors in the USA have a broader training and knowledge than chiros in Australia. The US chiros think outside the square and base their advice on good research ie. Dr Berg. I glean info from any professional who has a balanced approach.
Vitamin D helped with my persistent cough.
I've been coughing for 50 years. I think my dental fillings could be involved in an allergic reaction but l can't get a diagnosis. The cough hits me a few times a day (it's not continual) accompanied by mucus so l guess it's not a virus being so chronic. It goes from a tickle to a life-threatening asthmatic style attack.
50 years! Sorry to hear that Leonard. It sounds pretty serious though - perhaps see if you can be referred to a Respiratory Physician / Pulmonologist?
I was coughing for 30 years, 95% cut dairy products 😢(it was hard). In 2-3 months Cough gradually went down. bumps near big toes disappeared. WOW! That was a big surprise for me and for my doctor. In last 10 years I use very rare
Should see 5 specialists, Cardiologist, ENT, Gastroenterologist, Pulmonologist, Neurologist .
I been coughing for over 10 yrs. At first I was given Lisinopril that caused me to cough uncontrollably to the point where I'd have to where diapers. So since 2007 I have this cough. I've never smoked but my allergies are horrible.
If you've been coughing for that long with no clear answers, I'd suggest seeing your doctor again. If your allergies are bad though, try the suggestions in the video for post-nasal drip; it's a common symptom of allergies and a common cause of a longstanding cough.

Thanks very much
I was prescribe ,Gabapentin
Best sleep position when you have a dry cough??
I have a cough that comes and goes for the past three years. I have done chest x-rays and all to no effect, what do I do?
For that length of time, I'd definitely suggest seeing your doctor again. But do try some of the tips in the video too. Post nasal drip linked to allergies can be seasonal for instance and cough caused by acid reflex will vary depending on the food you eat or your exposure to alcohol or caffeine (both of which are triggers for reflux).
I have been coughing for three months what should I do l am from zambia
Take NAC!! Mic drop!
I have a cough for more than 8 months now I can feel a dripping in the back of ma head especially when am lying down
In that case, I hope you found the video helpful. But if its been with you that long, I'd also see a doctor if you haven't already
I cant spit the phlegm out. Ive been coughing and have trouble with phlem in my throat. 6 weeks now. Im on oxygen and have bad lungs. Ive tried everything to get rid of it. Any help would be appreciated.

🤢🤮 That's Disgusting. Do Breathing Exercises
A teaspoon of salt in half glass of warm water morning and afternoon. Gargle, then swallow. This stimulates expelling of phlegm for me.
I’ve had a cough for eight years! I don’t smoke, no asthma, it’s not in my chest, my lungs are clear, I’ve seen so many drs nobody has answers. I can cough so hard I gag and will throw up. Nothing helps!
How are you now? Did you find a solution?
@@Rob__James it went away on its own! 😳 I think it was stressed related.

"A little bit more longer ." What is more longer? It's just longer!
My mom have higher calcium score, and she has cough a lot more than 3 months. Do you know that is reason make her coughing. Thank you!
Hi Gwen, it's unlikely. I'm not aware of a high calcium blood level or high calcium score (a measure of calcium deposits in the heart) being a cause of cough. If she's had a cough for that long though, I'd recommend she see a medical professional

nothing single suggested to stop a cold. Just general talk. Avoid this.
A cough is a symptom. Your body will respond to imbalances within you and create a specific symptom.
So what creates these symptoms, you may ask?
These symproms are brought upon, from your body being toxic. There are four ways you body will naturally detox itself. They are, popping, peeing, sweating and breathing.
Whenever these are challenged based on ones lifestyle, diet, exercise, mental and emotional health, it could result in your body being challenged leading to toxins being stuck within your system or systems.
This for example, could result in a cough. This is body's way of trying to detox itself. Post nasal drip is another way the body is trying to send you a message that you need to detox.
Listen to your body, not someone else, including myself!!
Good luck.
I've been sick for a year
How are you feeling now?
How to stop a cough?
Coughing since 2022 from f covid vaccine wish I never got it!
I have had a cough a blocked nose in the morning and at night for nearly 2 year . I am so over it . I went to see a specialist he tells me ,I have turbinate in my nose and that's causes my coughing. I am on a waiting list hopefully I will stop coughing after I have a operation.
Do you have nasal polyps? If so…the operation removes them, but then they most likely come back after about 6 months. And the operation is VERY Painful. I would seriously have another baby than another sinus operation. But you said “turbinate”. Which everyone has. Are yours malformed or something? Sounds more like polyps. Just from experience…..maybe look for alternative ways to get rid of the polyps. Autophagy…diet….
