  • Another fantastic Switch conversion - and this time it's 4A Games itself that teases out some stunning visuals from Nintendo's console hybrid. Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux are both stacked up against the last-gen Xbox 360 and current-gen PS4 versions of the game - and the results are fascinating.

      Maybe if Nintendo didn't cheap-out and be lazy with the hardware, we would've seen many more impressive games on the Switch.
      In particular, they needed to use better fabrication (14nm) on release with modern (8-core ARM Cortex A72) cores, more (8GB) RAM, and adequate (64GB) storage. Perhaps even include an extra fan in the Dock. Now it can compete against the Base PS4/XB1 somewhat, and would benefit from heaps of third-party ports.
      Sure it will be SLIGHTLY more expensive to produce, but with mass-production and over the long time of the console.... it will become much more cheaper.
      Not to mention, fix the issues of the JoyCon slide, use proper audio solution for Bluetooth, get rid of those tiny internal buttons, and scrap the idea of 4-Player mode on that tiny screen.
      Overall, they should be able to compete without entirely relying on nostalgia and first-party titles. People would get it because it offered CURRENT games in a portable form-factor, and something much out of reach from Mobile Phone games.
      ...but since Nintendo opted for short-term gains instead of the long-term strategy, the Switch is going to be competing with people's already devices like iPhone/iPad/Android.... that's tough. And it's going to look outdated struggling to do 720p at 30fps with low-textures when the PS5/Xbox V comes at the end of the year with much higher textures, +60fps, and scratching 4K resolution. Like comparing the GameCube to an Xbox 360.... that's tough, again.

    It would be nice to have a video before the end of this year talking about all the technology that has been developed this generation.
    Dynamic resolution, checkerboard rendering, temporal reconstruction, DLSS, variable shading...
    These are game changing and have as much impact as LOD had back in the 90's.
    Excited to see these techniques mature and get better utilized coupled with the upcoming consoles, having the default lowest common denominator be a Ryzen CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads on machines with fast storage will surely bring in a much needed leap.
    Let's not forget Ray Tracing on top of all that as it keeps maturing and is something else that will be default for game development going forward.
    What do you say Digital Foundry? A video looking at this generation and the lessons learned that will carry on into the future?

  • @konczdavid
    @konczdavid Před 4 lety +240

    I have a gut feeling that the reason that 4A Games decided to spend that much time fine-tuning the controls and the deadzone values in this release, is because back then when I reviewed Metro: Exodus on PC, before the game's release, I've sent a lengthy technical explanation to them in e-mail in which I detailed why the game is completely unresponsive with a controller (I talked about proper deadzone values, sensitivity curve, etc.). They answered and they've listened because roughly a month later they have released a patch in which they added another control scheme to the game with modified deadzone values. It looks like they are doing the same here, but this time it's no longer a secondary control scheme, it's actually the main control scheme which I'm very happy about.

    • @HugoStiglitz88
      @HugoStiglitz88 Před 4 lety +17

      The controls definitely did improve with patches so I appreciate you reaching out to them. Personally I use preset 2 with the sliders at 70%, 80%, 30% and 0% roughly. Preset 2 imo has the best response curve

    • @konczdavid
      @konczdavid Před 4 lety +30

      @@HugoStiglitz88 Thanks! I think 4A Games is such an awesome team and it shows how much they care that they listen to random people like me. I also think that Digital Foundry should talk about technical aspects like these more - some games have very major deadzone problems on PC (Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided).
      I hate when games use unnecesseraly high deadzones. An ideal value is around 5-10% (15% at the very max). 10% prevents stick drifting with used controllers while it still offers great responsivity and you can make precise circular movements with it.
      The deadzone was originally around 30-40% in Exodus before that on PC and basically I was only able to turn my camera if I tilted the stick fully to the edge all the time, so basically, I had to play like those people who never ever used controllers before in their life - you know, the type of people who use it like a D-Pad. It was a challenge to shoot even a single target, while I can make precise headshots in a game such as R6S, even without "auto-aim", because of the well-tuned controls.

    It may not have occurred to some people bashing the switch, but the 720p resolution in handheld mode is due to the switch's screen being 720p. A higher resolution for the switch's screen would have drained the battery more quickly and would have given diminishing returns, taking into account screen size and a normal viewing distance. 720p looks amazing enough anyway, idk why people are complaining so much about it. At a normal viewing distance there probably isn't much difference between that and 1080p anyway, viewing distance matters as well.

    Kudos to 4A! What a fantastic port! I wish more developers would port the games to the Switch themselves like 4A. It allows them to maintain the integrity of the game they created as opposed to when the 3rd party studios do it. With 3rd party ports, often times all they care about is getting the game to run at a respectable performance profile while often sacrificing key elements of the games presentation which leads to it losing what makes a game special.
    Great job as always John! Keep up the good work

    • @kohkisparten117

      Ambro i mean, wasn’t doom and wolfenstein port developed by a third party company, and they did better than most other companies? I think it depends on the company, Bluepoint is also known for very good ports. There’s also bad ports from developers themselves that are extremely bad, because they simply do not have the resources or time to work on a port while they are working on newer games. Third party studios on the other hand are able to fully focus on ports and put all their resources onto it. So tbh, you can’t really tell which version is better because it just depends on the port.

    • @ambro2786
      @ambro2786 Před 4 lety

      @@kohkisparten117 That's true. Doom was considered an impossible port and owning it myself, I can say that I find the port well done. Not to mention PB have improved it with patches over time.
      I think it also depends on the individual and what his/her tolerance level is for acceptable. For example, I do not find the most recent Wolfenstein ports acceptable. dropping to 360p and having poor performance really doesn't cut it for me and those were handled by Panic Button as well. Others do find it a good port. To each his own.
      Another example. I find the Port of TW3 acceptable (and miraculous) but others do no and that was done by Saber Interactive.
      But then there are disasters like ARK who did it in house (I believe, someone correct me if I'm wrong ) and well... we all know how that went.
      I guess I'm just happy that, for a series as beloved as Metro, which relies so heavily on its story telling and atmosphere, that 4A took the time to make sure it maintained the visual presentation which is so important to them and the franchise.

    • @alexmohr1072
      @alexmohr1072 Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah I don't really know what you mean. It sounds like you're painting a picture that the majority of third party ports sacrifice the integrity of the games presentation which I don't think is true at all. The reason most companies hire third parties to port their games is because most of the time a third party is going to be able to do a better job than a dev that has no experience porting a game to a mobile device.

      Switch can run any game that PS4/XB1 can. As long as the game engine is modern, Switch can run it.

      @@3dgelord187 I don't think the Switch can run RDR2 at all. I'm sure it can run most of the games though.

  • @amphibeingmcshpongletron5026

    Played these games on steam with my decent PC, but definitely got these on sale for the novelty of playing portable. Knowing how they run on competent modern hardware, I'm still amazed at how well it runs as a portable game. And that's what I consider every switch game, a portable game. I got the OLED as my first switch, and I love playing games like the Witcher 3 and the Metro games portable, in addition to the Nintendo exclusives. The controls are a bit hard to get used to with the joycons, even with a grip, but I'm not playing these for a hardcore experience. I could always tweak the controls more or try out the gyro aim, which I've never used on switch so far, but hear works great with Metro.

      I probably would get Darksiders Genesis coming today and then there is Samurai Showdown and then animal crossing... Might probably get these after finishing or at least playing through those... FPS aren't my thing but these games have been done fantastically considering they came on ps4 and xbox one... About 360 version no doubt it would look better...

    This game, is one of those unique gems that wen released it didn't receive the valor it deserves, one of the best shooter of the last generation, the story is amazing, the graphics are top-notch, soundtrack, gameplay, everything on this game is amazing, and the immersion is absolutely incredible. This is really a dream coming true, when Switch was released I was hoping that one day I could play Metro on a portable, now I will, waiting for Square Enix to make my life even better and make a port of Tomb Raider to the Switch.

    I just finished 2033 Redux last night. Played from the Library all the way until the end on the Switch's handheld mode. There are times when the game became too dark even with the flashlight on so I had to rely on the nightvision goggles, specifically in some portions of D6.

    Great to see such an excellent port. Great games too. Interesting to see they have such low input lag considering the series has usually been a bit weighty, in the past. Exodus in particular.
    Super glad to see them using temporal AA/TSSAA on these where they haven't previously. Wish that would be done more often. There's a lot of older games that would benefit hugely from much more clean image quality vs. older AA methods or just untreated images. Wish Nintendo would start using it themselves, too. Mario Kart and a lot of the stylized visuals of their games would look almost CG-like without the strong aliasing you often get since they often leave their games almost untreated without any AA at all. (Or at best, sometimes a basic post AA.)
    Is the Russian audio included? That was always my favorite way to play, with English subs, as it just really raises the immersion a ton. Hopefully at least available to download, if not included by default.
