  • Strange design on our Volvos lets all kind of debris to collect inside the front fenders. This can rot and even let water stand in there. Advice is to remove the front wheel arches and clean well at lease every two years.

Thank you for all your videos. It has been a real help and a go to.
By following your advise and removal of the plastic arch, I discovered foam(impossible to remove without breaking it)also on the top part too. So by using a small milwaukee leaf blower and metal wire I have managed to clean completely both cavities.
And added my solution for this problem reoccurring- a little mesh to stop the leaves from falling inside.
Thank you again for your content!

Did this tonight on my 2014 xc70. Slightly different setup (more foam, and no issues with the cables). Could not remove the foam completely, but managed to clean it fully. Removed a lot of rotting leaves. Putting back the plastic turned out to be not so easy, but eventually it worked. And lifting the 18 inch wheels and placing the bolts without someone helping is not the best choice either :-) Anyways, water flows again (slowly, because of the bigger foam inserts), and I'm happy. The video is only 6 minutes, it took me 2,5 hours! :-D

Great tip! I have the same issue on my XC60.
Noticed it last summer when detailing the car. When i removed the inner wheel cover a big lump of leafs fell down and there was some left in there that needed to be cleaned out. I have a big tree in front of my parking place that is causing alot of this and aldo leafs under the hood.

Very good tips and good that you point out possible sources of error in the future. Other cars also have questionable solutions and constructions, and seem to be built as disposable products, and not to last and be repaired in a good and easy way. In Japan, for example, the idea seems to be to drive smoothly for 5 years and then scrap the car. I hope I am wrong, but...

Thank you so much for this video. Since I bought my 2016 XC90, I have constantly battled tree debris under the hood. My wife is very sensitive to mold and mildew, and becomes ill when she rides in the car - especially in the summer when the AC is running. Although I try to keep up with the detailing, I usually need to wait until the debris dries out so I can use my leaf blower to clear the hidden areas (in the area you mention plus the divider in front of the windshield, and the air intake). After the stuff is removed, I clean the area with an APC and disinfect it to remove the mold. Not perfect - but a lot better. Of course the dealer shrugs and says he has never heard of such a thing. Right.

You should also change the pollen filter for a good quality carbon one and use a air con cleanser/disinfectant which will clean the air ducts inside the dash. Will cost you about £30 for both things and will take about 20mins to fit the filter and another 10/20 mins for the Air con disinfectant cleaner spray to work, get one for air con not just any old spray.

I'm curious what your thoughts would be in filling the gap from below with spray foam insulation such as "GREAT STUFF Big Gap Filler 12 oz Insulating Foam Sealant". It would probably have to be cut and perhaps painted to look good. Maybe covering the hole from above with blue painter's tape covered with something flat and heavy to leave a clean edge that would hopefully be painted black or something and look nice once cured.

Sound better to fabricate some type of plastic cover with a gasket. You really don't want to trap moisture in any way. If it's not under vacuum it will collect moisture from the air and become dew when it cools.
