John Martin's is one of the UK's best stand-up comedians, but he is also a historian and today he joins us on WW2TV to talk about his decades of study into Operation Anthropoid which took place 80 years ago this week. Operation Anthropoid was the code name for the plan to assassinate Nazi Obergruppenfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich in 1942, and John is considered a world expert on the subject. He has appeared in TV documentaries and was even sought out by producers of the 2016 blockbuster movie Anthropoid to provide expertise, including on the actual film set in Prague. He was also the first person to be given an interview by Heider Heydrich, the only surviving son of Reinhard Heydrich. He will talk about his many visits to Prague and his on-going research

I have been official guide of Prague for ages, but I started to be more into Czechoslovak resistance in the past 3 years and did my own meetings with some of the family relatives of these heroes, especially Gabciks family, coz Im Slovak myself, but Mr. John Martin is a total class act! I need to have this book soon! Bless you John, its so wonderful to see that foreigners love our heroes so much and that you invested your life into knowing all about Anthropoid! Bless you!

40 years of research Wow. John underestimates his abilities, his dedication and determination to provide such detailed information on his chosen subject. The mere fact that Hydriech had raised production through his 'sugar and whip' philosophy blew me away. I believe 100% with John, that fact alone made him a target. Although the assassination attempt didn't actually kill him, it certainly led to his eventual death. Sadly the aftermath led to an onslaught on innocent people never seen before. Great show, great on site info and facts.
Well done John, your passion shines through, the honesty and integrity is outstanding.

This was one of your best shows ever Paul. What a great guest. What a knowledgeable, yet humble guy John is. Please have him back regularly as This really was truly fascinating, interesting and educational. The people involved are celebrated and rightly remembered. The repercussions were savage and show what we were fighting against and eventually, thanks to God I often think, we prevailed and destroyed this savage regime.

I just finished watching "Anthropoid" the movie. It was very moving and told much of the story I never knew. It was dramatic and thought provoking. I appreciate John Martin's influence in the film. It tells us what the price was for freedom from the concepts of the Nazi Party for domination. Very humbling.

What a great way to spend my evening watching and listening to a fascinating guest discuss his findings about Operation Anthropoid. I was a spellbound pup as I listened to his Merseyside accent describing his story. He is definitely a historian in every way, and one with the gift of good storytelling and charming sense of humor. Thanks for such a gift Woody! Wish we could all be having a beer at the pub together as we listened.

Immediately after Heydrich's arrival to Prague the martial law was imposed, gestapo arrested protectorate Prime Minister - gen. Alois Elias and two days later he was sentenced to death. Also many executions of previously detained important people started immediately (a lot of member of pre-war Czechoslovak army generality, Sokol members, pre-war politicians and well known public figures involved in resistence etc.). Especially those executed generals (e.g. Bily, Vojta, Svatek etc.) or Balaban (member of 3 Kings) were mentors or very close colleagues of guys running Czechoslovak millitary intelligence in London, even close friends - from pre-war times, so F. Moravec and his team took it like some kind of personal revenge. Blow for a blow. To let nazis know they can't f*ck with them easily.
Gabcik and Kubis were told to kill either Heydrich or Emanuel Moravec (basically the biggest Czechoslovak traitor, pre-war army officer), the choice was up to them based on situation "on the ground". They had chosen Heydrich. As defacto #3 in Nazi regime he was the highest ranked German killed by Allies during WW2.

So on point about being interested in history. I went to college for 2 weeks then went to jail. I’ve been in restaurants for 30 years. Got 4 years next week with no hard drugs. Yet I’m sitting here smoking a number. Love this stuff. Thanks again for doing these. Finished 2 books by Stahel and I’m on McManus’ Island Infernos. Bout to read Blood and Fire about the Original Iron Sheik. ( I’m also a fan of classic wrestling)

Fascinating show, and brought up a few great general points for me.
    1) Memorials - They obviously commemerate victims or the dead. But the proliferation of them, and potential politics behind them, show they are as much a statement of those who erect them as they are about those who are commemorated.
    2) Nazi Legacy - Heydrich's son did nothing wrong, and he seems to be a victim of the effects of the Nazi regime as much as anyone else. The knowledge of what his father did, and with the stigma attached to the family, it must be hard for him to led any semblance of a normal life. It's not only those who were directly persecuted by the Nazi's whose lives were destroyed, it effected so many innocent people including children of the persecutors, and that should be acknowledged.

There was a fairly recent film that had been on youtube but got removed, not the film Anthropoid and not Operation Daybreak , it was spelled Anthropoide with an "e" at the end I think? It was in another language , either Czeck or French I recall. Had much better cinema than the Heydrich films made apart from the 2016 film. Does anyone know which one I am referring to? I am sure I did not imagine it .. There is one detail my late Grandfather used to share with me that was innaccurate . The story my Grandafather told me when I was a young boy in the 80's was that the Germans were fanatical about punctuality and that all Gabcic and Kubis needed to do was to place a bomb that would go off at a precise time as Heydrich was always punctual. In fact it turned out , from what I understand , that Heydrich was running late on the morning of the attack.

@@WW2TVsince I read Lina HEYDRICH'S BOOK : Leben mit einem Kriegsverbrecher back in 1977; I read DESCHNER'S bio of Heydrich : the pursuit of total power 1977 [the best one] ; then M. Ivanov's ; then DEDERICHS and Gerwath's [a rehash of common places) 15 years I bought in Prag a booklet of Heydrich's speeches in both German and Czech [you can have it If you send me your address😅] . Now Heydrich was known to be impeccably dressed and he had bad front teeth....could you tell me more about this personal habits [ not the sexual ones) If you know anything about this at all. Churchill wore Savile row suits, for instance. So that kind of details.
      Greetings from Paris
