  • Soloing the middle and Eastern front of Helo World.
    After this I do another informal sortie with the Gazelle's (coming soon). Later in the day there was a larger scheduled session of BSD members hitting Helo World I couldn't attend, though, if I understood correctly the server might not have been reset, so I'd like to think my efforts here punched a hole for them.

      If you're talking the ones on the hilltop (in the intro segment) - they were BTR-80s. Possibly BTR-82s with the filthy big gun. No less viscious than BMPs at that range, they I would've needed the AP rounds do mow them down instead of HE/HEI.

    It’s very cool to see that even you sometimes eat a missile to the face at times XD
    Quick question though: in reguards to your most recent video on making the ka50 go stupid fast, have you considered making a video on how to get to a target as fast as possible with a combat load out?

    • @volkvoort
      @volkvoort  Před 6 měsíci +1

      In terms of using this assymetry, no. In terms of getting there'd I'd guess it's just ensuring your ground track is perfectly lined up and you're booking it as faster as possible without the blades touching. I don't have a chart for when the blades touch with e.g. collective position vs. speed vs. say weight though - in terms of how far you can push it past the V warning.

    Hey Volk!
    Would love to fly with you from time to time since I also love the BS3.
    Where do you fly normally? Are you even interested in a Wingman?

    • @volkvoort
      @volkvoort  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Sup. I've sort-of embraced the wingman idea with joining Black Shark Den's Reaper platoon. That said, I also (atm) don't have any restrictions on who I fly with, or happens to be my wingman any specific day. If you're on the server in a Shark, and hopefully on comms, cool. The trickiness is when and where I fly ;-). Between experiments for vids, work and South Africa having unstable power system now (meaning there's power cuts that I experience and might not be aware of the schedule that far in advance - also DCS is something my inverter doesn't handle for long), it means I'm haphazard with play sessions). Currently it seems I fly more often on Helo World, a little bit of Rotorheads, a bit of the South African servers if I see there's other helos happening and finally the more official Black Shark Den missions (because I know then there's no jet dominance, there's other Shark players and they're on comms).
      What I maybe should do more often if post in the community channel if I intend to hop on a certain server. Might be weekends more often, might not be notice well ahead of time.

    @machete83 Před 10 měsíci +3

    So, how is the INU alignment these days? It's been a long time since I've set foot in Shark cockpit, last I remember it needed like 16 minutes of alignment before a mission to be reliable.

    • @assaultboy269
      @assaultboy269 Před 10 měsíci +3

      Still the case. You can fly with a short alignment but it quickly becomes inaccurate after any evasive flying

    • @HobelDcs
      @HobelDcs Před 10 měsíci +1

      15min alignment is still required.
      in the ME you can set the Ka50III to have something like a "stored" alignment then the start up is only 3-5 min and you have precise alignment.

    • @pack_rat
      @pack_rat Před 10 měsíci +1

      Precise alignment (20 min) is way better. Normal (15 min) alignment requires pilot to align the compass as well - and it is a bit more complicated than just switching to magnetic and back. To align compass properly one needs to spend another 2..3 minutes (or your INU will have increased drift otherwise). On the other hand, Precise (20 min) aligmment does not require you to do something with your compass manually.

    • @HobelDcs
      @HobelDcs Před 10 měsíci

      @@pack_rat Yes you are right, PREC it is theoretically 20 minutes.
      but why should it take 2-3min to align the compass? This takes no more than 30 seconds to complete

    • @pack_rat
      @pack_rat Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@HobelDcs you can't align compass fine enough by magnetic, it's error is more than 1 deg, way too big. So when F10 map is in "map only" mode (most hardcore scenarios) the only way to align compass correctly is by some landmark. Identify such a landmark (airstrip markings are my favorite), point your nose at it precise enough and set course manually - it usually takes minutes.

    1. Always trust MWS
    2. Never hover, make an attack run per missle/rocket slavo and break off.

    • @volkvoort
      @volkvoort  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Ugh. So agree to disagree. Trust MWS - yes. Especially if the angle isn't change. That was me getting target fixated. Though I have also had it go nuts from nearby Apache's spamming Hellfires (could have been any helo to be fair) and not calling shots. But yeah, always trust it, agreed.
      Never hover - that one I strongly disagree with. Race track/running (or clover, etc) in attacks have their place, as does a hover. Running in, provided you break away early enough, can lead you with enough speed to dive faster into cover (if terrain allows) and might make stuff that shoots at you a little less likely to hit. If a race-track leads you into flying to unknown threats, or into range of a threat, then it's not great. Especially given how you see even those T-72 50 cal's tracing your trajectory - you'd need to be running in and constantly changing course a little. If it means you're focused too much on flying and can't target in time, that's also not great. Finally running in is less awesome if you have targets that are shooting at friendlies (which was the case at least twice in these sorties) or about to escape in the time that you're circling back, e.g. they're about to drive into a city-sprawl. Depends on the context.
      Hovering is great if you're in a position to not get shot at - since you're not driving into range of something to shoot at you. Also gives you time in the shark to go heads down and find e.g. that elusive Sa-2 while not inadvertently advancing over closer AAA units.
      So dependent on situation, need to kill the targets before they fire at you/friendly/escape line of sight as well as their ability to shoot at you.
      This case, I was taking unnecessary risks with those tanks in strafing around them while attacking. The BMP situation with my second death I'm not sure was avoidable - I needed the time to scope out that Sa-2, but also just running in flying over them they would have likely shot me. The position I was I figured should be secure, since my friendly tanks where further up a head a couple of hundred metres and appeared to be supplied with ammo and ready to kill anything that venture closer. But yeah, this footage isn't the best example of practice what you preach. Both techniques have their merits and their place.

      @@volkvoort Agreed on the MWS. It can be a huge help, but with it firing off whenever missiles are fired in your general area, it can be really hard to just dump and hit the ground every time the thing goes off.
      Even just doing the offline quick mission I've got setup, a couple of Hinds operating just outside of my viewing area are still often enough to set off the MWS in the Ka-50 and Apache. It's caused more than a fair share of false positive reactions.
      I think the MWS is great to say "Stop what you're doing and look outside". If you're exposed, scan the skies for incoming missiles and maybe slide behind cover for a bit. But it reacts to way too much for me to trust that I'm actually being fired on when it goes off, especially on a multiplayer server where others might be shooting over/around me.
