    Japan has made a U-turn in its foreign policy. Surprisingly, and despite the fact that the People's Republic of China is the largest client of the Japanese economy, Tokyo seems to have set itself the goal of strengthening the country's ties with Taiwan.
    Is Japan starting to play the role of a regional superpower, how can it help Taiwan, and how far do the ties between Tokyo and Taipei go? In this video we tell you all the details about the hot new alliance in the Asia-Pacific region.

      Japan was required to renounce all territory outside of the main island which include okinawa as term of surrender in WWII including the return of Taiwan to China. japan does not have soverighty over okinawa, it has regain administrative control as transfer by the US occupational force (since the US did not annex okinawa, US cannot actually transfer soverighty back to Japan). this is in opposite mirror to China relation with taiwan where China has soverighty over taiwan but no administrative control over it.
      Japan already recognise taiwan belong to China. if they were going to oppose China, they would have recognise Taiwan as a country already. it is a done deal. all this pretending is just wishful thinking, especially with the new prime minister being friendlier to china the previous PM, japan's defence ministry will continue to puff on the issue, but they don't make the policy, the PM does.

      I think what's also interesting is the fact that China will be in a must-win situation if they attack Taiwan because the entire cost they will take on will come from the global response of them starting a war. Why would they do it, if not to win? Now understanding that point, they also have nukes.... Nobody is fighting a nuclear war for Taiwan, I know that for sure... Taiwan loses no matter what, China prefers to keep Taiwan intact but will not lose a war to keep it intact if they already started one.

      @@yesyes1842 Welcome to Cold War II. The term you're going to want to brush up on is "brinksmanship". It's a dangerous game that both sides have to play and the US is not just going to give up the opening round without a fight.
      Having US soldiers killed by China is a situation the US must respond to and China knows this. All the US has to do is imbed troops in Taiwan and the question of "is Taiwan worth a nuclear war?" gets flipped back to China. And as it turns out, the US has already sent some over.

    • @yesyes1842
      @yesyes1842 Před 2 lety +2

      @Jon B I disagree with your assessment. If China nukes Taiwan with American troops inside Taiwan, you believe USA will have no choice but to respond. I believe US values the lives of Americans too much. No war US has ever fought involves their own territory and their own citizen's lives. American soldiers may die fighting and we seen them die in foreign territory but American citizens within USA do not get hurt in warfare. Fighting a nuclear war will change that when both sides can strike each other's country. US is not committing to a conventional war in the past 70 years and we're suppose to believe a nuclear war that risk millions of american lives over the island of Taiwan will happen for sure?
      At the end of the day countries all put their own self interest first. If China nukes Taiwan. Taiwan loses everything and China will be public enemy #1 and the world will isolate them. At that point is the best hand for USA to play to nuke China or to just work with the world to make sure China pays maximum price without suffering nuclear attacks? I can't understand what Taiwan DPP is doing, they stand to suffer the biggest loss amongst this love triangle if things really go bad.

One (of multiple) reasons TSMC aren't building cutting edge fabs in foreign countries is its alot easier for trade secrets leaking out, as in any industry a competitor (eg Intel) will have an easier time poaching competitions employees (eg TSMC Arizona employees) if they speak the same language and are in the same country as its easier for someone to uproot themselves and move to another state/province. This lack of language barrier has made it easier for Chinas SMIC to poach hundreds of TSMC employees since they speak the same language, although they only got so far because of all the sanctions on semiconductor equipment with US tech (eg ASML EUV tech while from a Dutch company it contains US tech and has US operations (eg laser maker Cymer)

I also had the opportunity to visit Taiwan and it is a beautiful country, I spent time in Kaohsiung City, Tai Pei (the capital) , and also Keelung. One has to remember that when Japan gave Formosa back to China in 1945, they gave it to the Republic of China, not the "People's" Republic of China, which didn't exist yet. Taiwan never "broke away" from mainland China either. That dispute is the result of a civil war that's been on hiatus since 1949. Basically, when the CCP resumed the civil war (the Chinese "Communist Revolution") after WWII concluded, they forced the Kuomintang government and nationalist forces to fall back several times, until they fled the mainland to Formosa, which would later be called Taiwan, and where the Kuomintang is still one of the island's democratic parties to this day. Taiwan still calls itself the Republic of China, because that's what they always have been, and they'd very much like to have their mainland back from those CCP usurpers one day. That might be a wet-dream at this point, given the disparity in military strength, but anybody who says that Taiwan is a "rebel" or "breakaway" province, is either misinformed, or lying.

      "Taiwan still calls itself the Republic of China, because that's what they always have been, and they'd very much like to have their mainland back from those CCP usurpers one day." Here you are confusing the Kuomintang Party with actual Taiwanese society.
      Not only Taiwan has not "always" been ROC, but nobody in Taiwan cares about "recovering the Mainland" because they never had it. Chinese inmigrants leaving to Taiwan on centuries XVII to XIX were abandoning China for good, breaking Ming and Qing laws by doing so. After 1949, the newly arrived KMT tried to brainwash the Taiwanese population to become nationalist soldiers that would "recover the Mainland" for Chiang Kai Shek, and until there wasn't freedom of speech in the 90s, Taiwanese had to pretend they cared about China or otherwise be murdered. Nowadays, for most Taiwanese the KMT claims are just old people's stories, they see themselves as an independent small country called ROC or Taiwan, that just wants to be left alone.

    I find it ironic that the CCPs own actions have pushed Japan to this, especially with respect to the proposed build-out of new military facilities in the East China Sea region. Assuming Japan follows through on that, it would be a major thorn in China's side if they are thinking about invading Taiwan in the future, as it would be a serious threat to their eastern flank, able to give missile air defense to a good portion of the island, provide logistics and staging to assist the island, and potentially coordinate with the US on helping Taiwan bloody any attacking force. And the CCP has no one but themselves to thank for pushing the Japanese to do this. :p As with many things in China, the wounds are self-inflicted by their wonderful CCP government.

And Taiwan is ready for this along with being invaded with paratroopers.
      Both countries will bomb / missile each other‘s military bases.Even if China could muster up enough boats including civilian for a land invasion it would almost be suicidal and a gamble Taiwan is somewhat ready and in another way hoping for as they know they will be able to sink lots of boats with lots of soldiers on board. They will take lots of stranded / Half drowning prisoners and killing a large numbers of Chinese sailers , frogmen and special forces soldiers.That’s what eventually will have to happen after all the rocket, artillery, Air Force and submarine attacks. China’s losses will be so great they will want a peace deal which will not benefit anybody and there will be lots of casualties on both sides so it will basically be a battle for nothing as no land or waters will change hands just a lot of red water around the island of Taiwan from everyone involved- especially China and there will be disappointment In not reuniting Taiwan with the mainland and their countries centennial anniversary in 2049.

    There is no reason to assume that their position will improve even if they are passive to a Chinese invasion and takeover of Taiwan, and in fact there is every reason to suppose that an even more emboldened China will be even less disposed to allow foreign interests any real profitability in their Chinese investments. if China is willing to loot and destroy its own domestic capitalists, it is long since overdue for non-Chinese investors to exit the scene before their position inevitably erodes further.

    For Taiwan to become a genuine independent nation, it must first write itself a new constitution to change its current official name from the Republic of China (ROC) to the Republic of Taiwan (ROT). Otherwise, as ROC, it remains the other China that nobody wants to recognize diplomatically since there can only be one China, which is the People's Republic of China (PRC). In short, Taiwan needs to have the galls to fight an independence war with China, much like the US did against Great Britain, to become truly independent in the international community.

      Won't work. Taiwan - as in the geographical island itself is owned by vaguely "China". Taiwan was part of the ROC before the Communist party won the war and the KMT fled to the island of Taiwan. ROC and PRC both "own" Taiwan because they both believe they are China. Therefore, if ROC decide to become independent then its game over because they would have admitted that they aren't the real China and thus the island of Taiwan will become undisputed territory of PRC and the new government of Taiwan will be considered illegal. At which point the PRC has the full excuse to annex Taiwan.
      Taiwan becoming independent is a death sentence for the government and they know it, which is why they don't do it even though they are backed by the Americans and Japanese.
      Edit: A war wouldn't work too. The Taiwanese military is not in any position to fight when they're sold old and obsolete military equipment from the USA. The ROC is between a rock and a hard place lol. In my opinion the best they can do is just keep the status quo and play both sides (China and USA) Kind of how South Korea and Singapore is doing.

    • @digitalnomad5643
      @digitalnomad5643 Před 2 lety +6

      Quite true. The moment Taiwan proclaim its existence as the Republic of Taiwan (ROT) is when it needs to fight China in an Independence War, much like that between US and Great Britain.
      At present the Taiwanese military appears ill-equipped for the task. Not so much, as it appears, about the "obsolete" US military equipment sold to Taiwan, but rather a shortage of man-power given that conscription is no longer in force on the island as of 2014 (refer - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_Taiwan), with the military being made up entirely of volunteers resulting in it becoming a shell of its former self (refer - foreignpolicy.com/2020/02/15/china-threat-invasion-conscription-taiwans-military-is-a-hollow-shell/). And not to mention potential fifth columnists in their ranks (refer - www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/4261383). Taiwan is after all a divided society populated by people from both the Blue and Green camps - hence not everyone is pro-independence.
      The political mechanism for keeping the status quo, a.k.a 1992 Consensus, appears long gone under the incumbent DPP government, and Xi has apparently grown impatient in his latest speech about Taiwan reunification.
      Hence Taiwan can either fight their way to independence or face the fate of becoming a Chinese autonomous region, much like Xinjiang or Tibet. What it must realise in the end is the unreality of foreign military forces fighting and dying on their behalf to achieve the island's independence.

Hundreds of years of history, migrations, and wars have made the ME a turbulent region, BUT, it is still easier for an average person from another country to understand fairly quickly who's on who's side if it is explained well. What I don't get is a region that has countries that hate each other (sometimes) investing in each other (most of the time), but still not recognizing each other (sometimes). lol

      @@newborn6 I totally agree that Asians are more practical. I would also like to agree with you that the ME will not advance because of religion, but this is a bit of a misconception or over simplification since religion is more of an excuse, rather than the real reason. The real reason is that our nations have no practical alternative to economic progress except for being totally dependent on either oil or taxes. The lack of innovation and foreign investments have kept us on the sidelines. There is a real fear of losing whatever natural resources exist in any given country and that has made these countries even more worried about opening up to other possibilities. If you stay dependent on physical natural resources, then you will continue to be an extractive economy, while if you invest in innovation and intellectual property, enemies will leave you alone because there's nothing tangible to steal or occupy.

      @@zayedmohammedali2945 Plus the population of middle east is not that big really. When I was a kid, I always used to think of ME as a place with loads of people, as is the case in my country, but I was surprised to know otherwise. The problem I believe is, the natives of oil rich countries of the ME simply don't know how to work. And I do not mean it as a disrespect. A life time of riches has kind of left them out of touch with the real world, I believe. And then the fact that 50% of population isn't allowed to really do anything, meaning women. I really do wonder sometimes, what has the ME as a whole decided to do, once countries like India and China no longer need oil. Although I do believe that it will take around 40years for my country India to transition from non-ren to renewable Energy totally. But when it does inevitably happen sir, what's the plan? Could you please tell me what the leaderships of your respective countries have decided for the future? Thank you sir, hoping for a reply 😀🙏🏻

    • @zayedmohammedali2945
      @zayedmohammedali2945 Před 2 lety +1

      @@kami425 There is no plan! Lol, now that might sound a bit funny, but there really isn't. The nature of Arab leadership is more reactionary than forward thinking, and even if they do think a little ahead, its only for the very foreseeable future. There isn't much to plan when you're just basically waiting for rent (oil rev, foreign aid, taxes) to come in. I would say the UAE and Saudi could be an exception to this. They are planning some things and there are some megaprojects underway, but so far, they have basically been in the form of services or tourist attractions, still better than nothing, I suppose but they are not an alterative to the current extractive economic model. I think that democratic countries like India have the potential to progress lightyears beyond ME countries because India is not confined to the whims of the glorious leader or other ruling systems like China, North Korea, and others. In theory only, the more restrictive countries will one day hit a wall and its extractive institutions will not be able to progress any further, but that remains to be seen. One might say that China's alleviating 850 million from poverty is the greatest achievement known to human history, so who cares if it's a democracy or not, while others would disagree.
      I'd also say you're right about the rich countries getting soft. No disrespect taken, my dear friend. Mind you, they haven't been rich for that long, only a couple of generations and it is likely that their money will not last that long. This is why they are investing in European countries and the US for safekeeping.
