Man the defense in the Stanley cup final. On one side Stevens, niedermayer and rafalski. On the other borque, Blake and Foote. Broduer vs Roy. What a series.
I'm not going to lie, as a 21 year old man at the time, I cried when Ray Bourque lifted the cup. Pure class by Sakic too.
I think that everybody that was a true Hockey fan had tears to a story book ending. It was almost like the Avanlange wanted to give him a cup. Sakic didn't even hoist the cup before handing it to Bourque. That tells you just how that was.
That’s what made Sakic such a great leader and captain, he wanted to give others the glory. He didn’t even want to take that photo, he just wanted to give the cup to Borque.
I consider that one of the Greatest moments in NHL history.

The ridonkulous 2001-02 Red Wings BARELY survived the Avs in the WCS. Everyone remembers 7-0, but gloss over the fact that it was GAME 7- and the Avs actually led 3-2 in that series after 5, then ran out of gas.
I love going back to rewatch some of these old videos! I’m watching this a couple days after my Avalanche team beat the Lightning in 6 games to become the Stanley Cup champs of 2022!!! Here in a couple more days I will be attending my 3rd Colorado Avalanche Stanley Cup champions parade in Denver!!! My Avs now match my Denver Broncos with 3 championships!!!! #GoAvsGo

Roy was outspoken and a bit cocky, but no more or less eccentric than any other NHL goaltender. The best goalies are all burnout mindfreaks.

The Canucks got manhandled, but this season was the start of a turn around for them though. You have to admit that. This was the beginning of what became our beloved 2011 team. It all goes back to making the playoffs in 2001 for the first time in years. Of course Colorado kicked our ass, it was ugly, but 2001 was a turnaround. Anyways, great video as always :D
You are absolutely right. Roy's role on the 1996-2003 Avalanche team cannot be underestimated. They went to the conference finals 6 times in those 8 years in large part because of Roy. People often forget that he wasn't just some kind of goalie beast endowed with unlimited natural talent. Roy was incredibly methodical and fundamentally, his butterfly style was about the percentages. His most formidable skill, however, may have been his ability to bounce back from a bad game, which I think is a testament not only to his mental toughness, but also his rigorous work ethic.
I relied on monthly magazines, a weekly tv show of half an hour length and video text to follow the team back then. Still bought a fake but expensive Sakic jersey and wore it proudly in my small German town. This internet thing is pretty neat.

Man in 2000 broduer outdueled ed Balfour. Then following year he came up short against Roy. That's 2 legendary goaltender battles. Then in 2002 u saw hasek vs Roy. And Roy got lit up in that game 7. Wings chased him out of net. That was something u didnt see. Roy get chased in a game 7.
Shook his own confidence with the statue of liberty 'save'. I'm a Roy fan but one of the things that made him great was ultimately his downfall in the end, his lack of humility.
I'm a St. Louis guy and I see a similar personality in Binnington.

Agreed- as an Avs fan, I actually think Moore instigated everything, and Bertuzzi ended up with a bum rap (though he DID go WAY too far).

Clearly Bertuzzi went over the line, but under the circumstances I can't *really* blame him for losing his cool. Disastrous judgement call on his part- He did not intend for Moore to be so seriously hurt.. However, generally speaking Bertuzzi was not a particularly dirty player aside from that. Steve Moore, on the other hand, kind of was.

Roy was the best because he wanted to prove that he was the best. He stepped on the ice in preseason and wanted to prove it to everybody.
HE ASKED TO BE TRADED BECAUSE OF A BAD GAME.... Seriously... That happened. People that followed Montreal saw it happen. ONE BAD GAME and he was angry enough to walk right to the owners in front of the coaches and LIVE TV and ask for a trade.
That is what Roy was. He wanted to be the best so badly that he wouldn't accept a coach that would put him in a position where he wasn't

He and the coach also had a real bad like for each other that one bad game for Roy was made worse for the fact that he was ledt in so long after it was noticed he was off his game i bet he would have stayed in Montreal had he been pulled after the 4th or 5th goal not the 7th
I agree with you that Roy wanted and needed to be the best and would not accept a coach/Team with lesser ambitions but it was not a single game that drove him out of Montreal. At the morning of the game Vernon and Roy met by accident at breakfast and talked. Vernon has stated in an interview ( years later) that Roy was already seriosly unhappy and even thought about retiring. Vernon apparantly told him to get trated instead.... Vernon said he was super nervous after the game because he had an idea what Roy had done and was afraid of the media in case Roy told them about their conversation XD
@@nessu1385 Mario Tremblay was an analyst on Radio Canada and the Canadiens pick him up right after a broadcast where he blasted Roy publicly. It was like within a week or two of Roy asking for that trade... What would you do if that would have been your coach. Remember too that Laleur retired after being benched and probably asked to be traded too and Roy was looking at the same ownership I think
@@answeris4217 Ohh I think you got me wrong. I totally agree that Tremblay was the main problem even if Roy had a big ego and was propably difficult to coach at times. I meant that he did not leave because of a single bad game but because of what happend before already (Roys and Tremblays relationship*, the media and the way the organisation was headed). The game was the straw that broke the camels back (with the help of Roys temper) and I guess proved to Roy that his coach had it out for him. Good for him to get out of that toxicity as soon as he could even if it would have been better if he had asked for the trade less publicly and thus made the goodbye more dignified.
*Examples for the shit relationship they had: Roy and Tremblay almost got in to a fight shortly before Tremblay became coach, Tremblay mocked Roys accent, Roy giggled/laughed at/about Tremblay in the lockerroom and Tremblay was pissed of about it, Tremblay allegedly shot pucks at Roys neck in practice wich pissed of Roy, Roy compained because a player who was late to practice but got to play anyway and Tremblay left him in net for 9 goals for it .... honestly sort of surprising it did not end in a fight

Yea, the Avs took advantage of the salary cap rules (or lack thereof) before the Lockout in 2004. Since the 2005 CBA, they've been mediocre at best.

I would also like to add that not only is it near impossible to replace a goalie like that on any team but try to replace players like that as well in the salary cap era
As much as I love Scott Steven's he got burned in that series by sakic. Sakic was a beast that year. One of the few times someone got the better of stevens.
That Sakic goal in game 7 was the final nail in that matchup. Through Stevens legs and over Brodeur's shoulder. So nasty.

Bourque was 2nd in the Norris that season,behind Lindstrom. And Forsberg,Sakic,Hedjuk,Bourque,& Roy all made the All star game in Denver,& I think 4 were starters.(it was N America vs World setup back then)..then we traded a few weeks later for #6-Rob Blake. Who had already won a Norris,& was a top 5-2 way dman at the time.
Bourque had obviously lost a step,but still was playing at an All star level...was more than merely an emotional leader. Im not saying you were saying he was only that,but some people seem to have that idea,which is flat out wrong-he had somewhere around 60 points that year. And Forsberg was arguably the best player on earth at the time.
I still prefer marty but I won't argue roy as the best.
Game 6 was a shutout but as an asterisk next to it on the disallowed goal. I’ve seen worse goals called goals.

Boston didn't get "over the hump," cuz they played Edmonton twice bro. Edmonton was just better. As for the '01Avs, Im biased, as an Av fan. But I think the '01 Avs, are the 2nd best team, since those Edmonton teams. I didn't become a huge nhl fan, til 1995. It pains me to say, but 2002 Detroit,(I don't know how the '02 Avs, even took them 7. We weren't the same team in '02, despite many of the same guys) is the best team I've ever seen. But 2000 NJ isn't far behind those 2. And even '99 Dallas, is better than all the current teams. None of these teams now, are on the same level, as those teams. Mostly cuz of the salary cap, we will never see teams as stacked, or deep, as pre cap days.
Having said that, I'm pumped to get it on, & see what the 2020 Avs can do. But either way, we are young, deep,& fast. Avs have as bright of future, on paper, as anybody in the NHL. No matters what happens this summer. I just hope they can pull it off safely,& give out the Cup to somebody, without getting COVID fired back up.

+The Hockey Guy - Brodeur played terribly in the 2001 SC playoffs. No ifs ands or buts about it. I don't know if he had just started his affair with Genevieve or what lol, but up until the 01 post-season, I had never witnessed Brodeur play that bad. Thankfully, I never witnessed him play like that again. His off year couldn't have come at a worse time as the 2001 Devils were at their best offensively. It will always go down as the _only_ post-season and SC Final, where all Brodeur needed to be was mediocre and he'd a won the Stanley Cup.
I think you pointed out an interesting thing from that magazine, which is the fact that Brodeur struggled with _LESS_ shots. Contrary to popular belief, Brodeur's stats _SUFFERED_ b/c of the low shot totals. I've shared it with you before, but Brodeur performed _BETTER_ when he saw more shots than less. As a matter of fact his playoff SV% when seeing more shots, is virtually identical to Hasek's SV% numbers with Buffalo. The fact is, there isn't a goalie out there that has superior stats because he saw _LESS_ shots. You can try and prove me wrong but it won't happen. Check out the goalies with superior SV%'s. They _ALL_ have higher shot volumes. Why? Because when you see 30-40 shots a night you can give up 3-4 goals and at worst, you're looking at a .900 or above. It's simple mathematics. Conversely, if you see 18-20 shots a night, the second you let up more than 1 goal, your SV% is toast and you're looking at a .900 or below. That's why I don't understand why _Less_ shot totals are used _AGAINST_ Brodeur. They've hurt him more than helped him statistically. That, and the fact that he, himself, is a huge reason why his shot totals are low, so to use it against him is also silly for that reason.

MB30 GOAT Brodeur really wasn't that good. One of the better goalies at puck handling and quite durable but very mediocre stats. Quite durable? He was the MOST durable tender of the modern era. No one goaltender will ever play as many games as Brodeur did ever again, his records are almost untouchable, not to mention one of the very best at playing the puck ever. He also had one more Vezina than Roy. Hockey fans who use just save % to account for ranking goalies are the one's who are in the wrong, it's such a flawed stat.
Joseph McAuley sv% is the only stat that shows the individuals true talent...GAA, wins, SO are all team influenced stats. He had 3 great seasons and a bunch that he was decent but not great on top defensive teams. Those teams would've made chris osgood a hof'er.

No they struggled replacing him because they figured his money was better spent on fwds. They got kariya n teemu with roys money as it was pre salary cap era n basically ever since Colorados ownership n front office has always weighed offense much more then defense. All thier draft picks the last two decades have all been offensive defenseman n offensive fwds for the most part n im talking like 90% of all moved colorado has done has been offensive other then 2022 with manson n others trade. Thats the real reason, patrick roy declined quite a bit towards his last few years but the team built more defensively to protect him. Roy used his size toward the end of his career and had the best defensive team in the league that happend to be really good offensive as well. Roy played well but he wasnt an elite top goaltender when he retired or u just didnt watch cause his team made it as easy as possible on a goaltender his last few years.

The whole ray story is bs... why is it noble to leave your team? It’s so lebron esque... not to mention it’s obvious the league handed the cup to him. Looking back this was the best devils team of all time.. they led the east in scoring!! This series was fixed. I don’t really follow sports anymore ... it’s all a stage.
As a non avs fan I love the fact that bourque won the Stanley Cup was the only thing I cared about.
