      It's rather simple really: If the opponent taps, then they forfeit the match and you win. There's no need to hold on for longer, the opponent has already given up. Holding on for longer seems like an unnecessary health risk to me. I don't care how much respect judokas get from filthy casuals who don't know the sport, a person's health is more important. If you're unsure whether someone tapped, it's also possible to slightly loosen the chokehold for a bit to check. If the opponent keeps resisting, you can simply tighten the hold again.
      Many judo competitions are also recorded on video so if there's doubt whether someone tapped, they can usually check with the head umpire. Of course there are also shitty people doing judo who will tap and then later deny it but these are the absolute exceptions and it happens rarely because usually the judges realise when someone taps.

      2 years later but those are Fake tap outs. They're only tapping twice to trick the guy into releasing them without actually losing, that's why the referees are not stopping the fight. Tapouts in judo work as they work in any other combat sport. 3 straight taps, anything else is not a valid tap.

    • @lemanman9004
      @lemanman9004 Před 3 lety +5

      Notice how the first guy is only tapping twice per tap attempt, and the opponent doesn't let go. But then the guy actually panics and attempts to tap for real by tapping over 3 times in a row and the guy does releases him in that case.

    The way these slow ass refs are reacting to chokes and judoka tapping out, I couldn’t even begin to fathom the thought of the IJF still allowing leg locks. Could you imagine how many knees would get fucking obliterated because of someone tapping to a heel hook and the ref not stopping the damn match OR the judoka who’s attacking simply not letting go of the submission?

What this guy meant was that they should know some submissions for the fighters safety, not that mma refs are better than judo refs. Why would you think that this is a competition anyway. Also mazzagatti is famous for being the worst, funny you should pick him as the average mma ref for your rhetoric

    • @Omgiamsotriggered
      @Omgiamsotriggered Před 4 lety +3

      Not MMA refs but Jiu Jitsu refs. Jiu Jitsu got so spread over the years and got bigger than Judo, meaning that alot of Judokas now cross train both to get better at both worlds. Unfortunately many of the refs are oldschool judokas and its based strictly on old judo. Judo got modernized due to alot of new arts and styles being introduced and everything evolved. Just look at it, refs dont even recognize half of the chokes that pose a real death threat!

    • @ememe1412
      @ememe1412 Před 4 lety +1

      Lol. Before MMA, Judo competitions have been going on for a century. Unfamiliar with submissions? It is for the competitor to release when the Ippon is called. If the competitor feels a tap, he may release the pressure but not the hold until the other competitor confirms they have submitted, hence multiple taps, or the ref calls Ippon having seen the initial tap out. If a competitor loses consciousness, the ref will still give a verbal command to release.
      MMA competitions, ref needs to pile in because they cant be heard. Any case, MMA is not short of examples where refs are slow to break a choke or strangle, allow 6 too many punches on a ground and pound or allow injured competitors to continue....

      My reason: Judo is a good base for throwing but throwing for the sake of scoring. Often you see professional judo practitioners throw and roll over the opponent as a nice way to finish the throw, when in reality the opponent would just take the back and choke you out.
      If it wasn't for nippon rules I would favor judo, but until you have finished your opponent he remains a threat. That's why bjj and jiu jitsu is a nice complement in my opinion. Although it sure is important to be able to take your opponent down before going for the submission ;)

      @SLfromknifetown Před 5 lety +3

You have to progress all the way, or you will be stood up. You may want to notice that the triangle is practiced three ways. Reverse, from the side or from the guard. Well, the d'arce and anaconda has almost never be seen in judo, but the rest of it has. The arm triangle is nothing new.

      @GrapplerKingdom  Před 5 lety +2

      Hello, the more the better, but 2 sessions are enough as long as you keep your mind open and try to understand main principles of Judo. If you don't consider competing, 2 sessions are enough. Besides that you can improve by watching competitions, analysis, reading Judo literature etc., It all depends on motivation, it's not the hours of training that counts, but what you put in those hours. Good luck!

    @7:54 why does he stay on the ground and doesn't even turn over or try to move immediately? Ive seen this in a lot of tbe judo comp videos ive watched on youtube. Are you not supposed to defend yourself or tr y to counter? I'm new to Judo so bear with me

      @judojudo3808 Před rokem +1

      He is in the position that allows any counter. He can't get up from this position etc. He can defend only. He got herself in this position after bad attempt of throw (uchi mata) and her opponent take over activity and he goes to newaza immediately uses technique hadaka jime (kind of choke) and he won match. We can discuss if his defence should have been more activities etc his neck shouldn't have been so wide open as here etc.

    Coming from about a year of jiujitsu, I started doing judo, and the approach to the ground game is soo different. Of course with the Judo white belts I can tap them consistently, even with only one year of training, but anyone else I'm trying to get used to their approach. Very different from jiujitsu when it comes to newaza

    • @TheSilence1
      @TheSilence1 Před 5 lety +9

      The difference in approach says much about each art. In Judo, the emphasis is in getting into side control. The reason being that Judo came from weapons fighting, and the goal was to control the weapon arm. Have a look at this video: czcams.com/video/--lVHa2ZJ_g/video.html The goal to control the weapon arm is also the reason why Judo throws look the way they do. When Judo went to Brazil and became BJJ, they didn't have that context of sword and knife fighting. So they took out what they didn't understand. The second difference is Judo places an emphasis on pins. This is because in a fight with real consequences, aka on the battlefield, getting pinned for twenty seconds means getting ground 'n pound for twenty seconds. It means getting pinned and getting stabbed with a tanto. Again we can see that BJJ was created out of context from real life-or-death fighting. And that's how BJJ became a style where being in the bottom position became safe and the go-to tactic, where pulling guard became the way to initiate the grappling, and where leglocks became viable because we don't have to worry about a knife getting pulled out at some point.
      EDIT: As a side note, this concept of controlling and disarming the weapon is why Aikido looks the way it does. czcams.com/video/E3PY-WSEkE8/video.html

      No, leglocks are forbidden. The problem is that a lot of times referees suck when it comes to ground situations and things like that go unnoticed. Recently tIJF made referees look at these situations more carefully but, things like that still happen from time to time.

      In judo, we have time limits before we're stood up, so you have to establish an opportunity for a submission and execute it quickly. The key is to have your throwing technique land them in a position where you can drop straight into either a dominant position or a submission entry

    For all the people saying "OMG!! That's a bad referee! Not reacting to tap out!!"
    They're not reacting because it's a fake tap out. It's a very common (dirty) strategy in judo, you tap TWICE to trick your opponent into letting you go, but it doesn't count as defeat because you need to tap three times.
    Notice how in none of the cases where the refs "don't react", the guy in the submission only taps TWICE, some cleverly space them to make it seem like they're 3 but they're just 2 taps, and then they actually tap out 3 times or more and the ref immediately calls it off.
    "OK but what about the chokes?? They were passed out!"
    In judo if you don't pass/tap out in 20 seconds (iirc) the ref breaks off the engagement and you both go back for another round. They can't break it off as soon as the person "goes unconscious" because in many cases they're still conscious and the fighter can appeal the decision if the ref called it off too soon

      @Mr_Perses Před rokem

      I was curious about this three tap rule you’re talking about so I tried searching for it online. I found nothing anywhere about a three tap rule under judo rules. I even went to the international judo Federation website, and there was nothing there saying that you’re required to tap at least three times if being submitted. The information I did find about tapping out stated that two or more taps are all that is needed. I don’t think it’s a fake tap out issue, I think it’s a bad refereeing issue.
