Old steam engineering manuals give formulas for sizing leather cups. I have made many. I had an old Dingley front end loader that used leather cups about 4 3/8 inch if I recall. Cobblers ( if you can find one } have pieces of leather that are a handy size for cups.

Thanks for sharing, inspired me to have a go with chinese 10 ton porta power seal on wedging attachment , still looking for a seal for it, any way cut out a leather washer shape ,put it on ,oiled and cupped by hand , fitted and its back working while i source a proper seal, hmmmm will see how it goes lol, cheers kirk

I bet that will work great, especially as the leather soaks up oil and expands a bit.

Does the cup have to be tight to the pipe or very close to the pipe diameter for it to effectively work? I am replacing a 2.5 inch cup and I am wondering if a 3 inch pipe would be a problem.

they should be the same size, with the pump leather being just a hair bigger to allow it to seal well.
