      "Age ain't nothin' but a number," is relevant because people age differently depending on their lifestyle, health, where they live, and genetics. But more importantly, most people can't guess other people's ages accurately. Just give them the leeway of about a decade and they'll guess a person's age group accurately most of the time. IMO, Teller definitely looks like he's in the early-60s to early-70s age group.

Thing I love about magic is even though I'm a rational (mostly) engineer, I love being tricked. I know it's a trick, but it still makes me grin. I've travelled a lot, and always love finding street performers & close-up magicians, and I guess that's also linked to keeping overheads low. Years ago, when I started my career, when suddenly overtime was regular and constantly available, sometimes even mandatory, and I was rolling in cash, my dad told me, "never live beyond your means, and never live on overtime. That well dries up with zero warning."
      Words to live by. Overhead low, expenditures stable, income consistent, and by all the gods and goddesses, save, Save, SAVE. Put money away. Try to keep at least half a years pay saved up if possible. Especially when things like Covid happened, I had that money put away, and even though my hours went through the floor, nobody in this house went hungry. No bills late, no freezer empty. Now I'm back to working more stable hours, even some overtime, and putting money back in savings.

    I realized the other day that Fool Us is really P&T's way of giving back the success that they've had, to all the little people. It's full of heart and soul, unlike things like American Idol or whatever where it's all about laughing at the losers and watching then get cut down, and then being totally in awe of the rare few Idols. Fool Us is different. It isn't so superficial. There's a depth there. Everyone gets exposure, and even if they don't fool P&T they can still fool the audience and viewers and that's ultimately what counts. It's not about the trophy, that's a red herring IMO, but there is of course a certain fun that the challenge of striving to fool them adds to the show to where it would be boring otherwise just everyone seeing magicians come on stage over and over. It adds a little thrill to satisfy everyone's reptilian brain, but it's not the real point or purpose of the show at the end of the day.

    “Always share meaning in what you do”. Wise words indeed. You mentioned the speed of hooking folks into watching a video, the challenge to keep them from clicking or scrolling away after 3 seconds. But Teller states it here and you already stated it and planned your performance this way yourself: NOT to go straight for a visual trick immediately, but to hook us in EMOTIONALLY. To connect with us via a story or capturing our attention with imagination and something MEANINGFUL. It’s right there in your performance, and right there throughout this video. Truly, well done!

    I had the privilege to meet both Penn & Teller over 30 years when they had the humility to come out and meet all their fans personally after a Vegas show. I remembered what a impression that made, and it is awesome to see them on Fool Us still giving feedback and inspiration to a new generation of magicians.

  • @Not_Ciel
    @Not_Ciel Před 3 lety +29

    10:12 I HAD A SNEAKING SUSPICION THAT SHIN HAD A HAND IN THIS! As soon as that emotional music came on during the bit, I was like "Holy crap, this music paired with this performance reminds me of Shin's performance"
    Edit: 10:56 Called it. The last part of your performance with the music was extremely emotional. It felt, in that moment, as if you in the audience had also went on this journey and it was coming to and end (just like the performance was), but you didn't want it to end because the journey thus far was so incredibly good. When I saw this Fool Us clip for the first time, I was on the verge of crying by the end of it and I imagine that's how the entire audience felt as well. Age aside, bravo on creating a magic routine that very *very* few magicians can manage to create and get the audience emotionally invested in.

    •  Před 3 lety

      Actually, he pays way more attention to Kevin's words than the attention Kevin gives to Teller's. Most of the time, it seems to me that Kevin is just waiting to say something, not really listening. At certain points, he also proves that by saying something not really connected with what Teller said. I don't know if I'm right, but the impression I got is that Teller is absolutly humble while Kevin's not humble at all. An impression of mine.

    This is terrific! I've not heard Teller in such an extended dialogue. Just more proof of how great P&T are - and even better that Teller had been a teacher! And like the best teachers who live on in their students through their teaching, so magic is so much about mentoring others and creating genealogies that continue to live. So moving.

    What you said about giving a trick meaning struck a chord with me. It's easy to get very caught up with very technical elements like proper misdirection, but the best misdirection in the world won't be worth much if you don't hook the audience in the first place. People like to watch something unbelievable so you will always be able to find someone to amaze, but giving them some kind of emotional investment just makes all the other responses so much more intense.
