This is so awesome to me because I started playing ice hockey when I was 14 and in the 8th grade (last year) and played house for a year and was pretty bad not going to lie but after a summer of skating hard and improvement I made my high school's team and we went to the state championship this year. I just wish I started the sport when i was younger so I could have a couple more years of this because I love it! I hope this kid goes places he has the determination.

That is so awesome. I am now 13 and have only been skating for a year. Tonight is my third ice hockey game. I have never played before and it has been a tough journey for me. I was told constantly by people who are now my fellow teammates that I would never be able to play. I watched many of these HowToHockey videos and they have helped me a lot. Weird thing is my name is Nick and as you can see the kid in the video is #5 and I am #5 on my hockey team. Thanks to the support of my family and friends and these videos, I can play the game I love!

Im fourteen. I've been paying house hockey for 3 years now. I really want to play travel but my parents don't have the time to drive me to games and practices. And of course money is also an issue. All the coaches say that I really should be in a travel league, but I guess I will just keep playing house and hope that something happens.

    • @howtohockeytraining
      @howtohockeytraining  Před 10 lety +43

That is part of it, travel hockey is a big commitment for the parents, both financially and time-wise. There are ways around it.
#1 - You need to have someone believe in you, this is usually done through either amazing talent, or at least a lot of dedication and commitment
#2 - For money you can usually do fundraising to pay your registration. If no fundraising exists you could always do odd-jobs (like I did) and pay for your own registration. When people know a young person is working towards a goal they will usually help. I've seen some kids do bottle drives, cutting grass, raking leaves, etc
#3 - For the time commitment once you are on the team the people are usually very helpful. This works out well for car pooling to games and practices.

Hey Jeremy, thought I'd share my story too. I started hockey when I was 11 and I was awful until my second year of midget. In my first year of midget I had one assist all year. But then I stumbled on your pavel datsyuk stickhandling video and I subscribed and built a skills training guide with your videos and did the shooting challenge a couple years back. The next year in house I scored 30-40 goals and ripped it up. In my third year of midget I was cut from the AA team and played A where I continued to work on my game and improve watching your videos. By the end of the year I had become good enough where the AAA players from my organization were not as good as me, and I got some junior B camp invites and a main camp invite. I didn't make the team I tried out for but I'm going back this year where I'm pretty sure I have a good chance. I wouldn't have made it this far without your videos, thanks man! cheers!

5 years ago, I played my first season of hockey at age 7 (I'm 12 now). I was just playing tier 6 house league. There was one year where I almost was placed on the worse team in my organization. I played for fun and just enjoyed it. Last summer, I said to my dad after a camp "Dad, I want to play more...competitively,". He said "Well, you never know,"
Fast forward to this season (2013-14) and I was trying out for my rep team. Somehow, I got past the first round of cuts. "Omg, I actually got past it," Then, I got past the second round of cuts. "I actually have a legitimate chance of making the team," I was waiting in the hallway, to enter the coaches room. I was one of the first ones to go in, and somehow, they said I made it on the team.
So I went from playing tier 6 hockey, trying to make it one level higher, to playing on a Peewee AA team against some of the best players in the province. I got to go to the Alberta Winter Game tryouts, and now I'm vying for a Bantam AAA spot.
Long story short, a lot can change in one year. There was a few times where the coaches said "This kid came from the lowest tier, and he's being one of the best players on the ice. He's showing work ethic, and not giving up," Probably sound cocky, but this past year has been life changing.

I turn 14 in a week and I started 2 months ago at 13. My grandpa signed me up for learn to play lessons. Every one is 4-7 and I’m twice their size but that doesn’t stop me. I already learned how to stop and skate, and now I can pass and shoot. My grandpa loves the Bruins, along with my uncle and my dad liked the Whalers when they were in Hartford (when he was still alive.) It’s been a year and a half since I’ve been obsessed with this sport. I told myself that I would only make the men’s league but my coaches are telling me I’ll make the varsity team at my high school next year and my grandpa says I’ll make it to the nhl. Thank you Jeremy for your helpful videos. Thanks to you, I’ve been able to come a long way in such a short time with so little.

Thanks good story. I'm 14 turning 15 in 10 days. I fell in love with hockey in about 6th grade when I met these kids that were hockey players and I was interested in it ever since. So I started to hang out with some other kids that played hockey closer to my age. After a while those kids turned into complete assholes. They called me "Retarded" "Fat" "Bender" "Duster", saying I had no ability to play hockey. One point back in March they texted me "Come over were playing street hockey" (They often did this to me to get me to come over those basterds lol) I went there with my roller skates (keep in mind i first skated back in January in my backyard rink that me and my dad built and I fucking blew ass at roller skating) so I was pissed off and went in the kids shitty driveway to roller skate. They came over and laughed in my face, I tried to laugh along but inside I was crying. This one kid that played lacrosse ( I was probably better then his ass at hockey) said to me "NHL will never happen" That right there choked me up and ruined my life, everyone just started laughing and my best friend I thought at the time didn't do anything about it. He then said "Just but your own equipment" I tried to say I don't have money to sign up and buy new gear but they don't understand. There is a whole lot to the story that is even more dramatic. I just wanted to say practice your ass off every god damn day even if it means not hanging out with your friends after school all the time, shoot pucks, skate, learn. Just don't give up... Like I did, I don't think Ill ever have the chance to become a ice hockey player but you got it right now take it run with it don't let go because one day if you let up, every morning when you wake up and every time you go to sleep, you will say to yourself " I could be doing something I loved doing but I let them get the best of me." Look I know that this is a long ass comment haha. Well I guess I'm depressed every day since I stopped giving a shit about hockey think about suicide and get upset about life but I cut the bullshit and see people like you not letting the obvious stupid saying " If you didn't start when you were little you can't do anything." I really want to see make it to the NHL some day. Please message me or give me a social media or phone number to contact you. I wish you the best of luck. Try your best man!

Great story. Great advice and great site Jeremy. My little guy is 4 years old, he's been skating since he was 3. His love of the game comes from him alone. I grew up playing and obsessed with basketball. But my son got a mini-stick set at 2 1/2 and never let it go. I want to share in my kid's love of the game, so I've been watching your videos so I can skate along with him this winter and I'll be joining an adult learn to play hockey program here in Toronto. Your site has been an incredible resource, from learning how to tape a stick to the intricacies of the game. I'm in love with the game now, and have probably watched more hockey in the last 2 years than I have in 35 years :) Wishing you all the best and success with the site and your business. You deserve it!

Jeremy, thank you for helping me and everybody else out. I have been playing hockey since i was 3 and i am still not on a travel team. i have been asked to try out and stuff but me and my family just don't have the money at the time. I promise you i am trying the best i can. I am really working at it and i can't seem to play for that travel team. I do play on a travel roller hockey team because that is a lot cheaper but it is my dream to play in a minor team or even just a tear or travel team. thanks again jeremy.

I've been playing street hockey my whole life and always loved it and then 2 years ago I wanted to play ice so I started Dek Hockey leagues and moved my way up practicing skating which I was really bad at first but after a year and a half and 2 seasons of Bantam House League with 8 Goals and 2 Assists 4 Blocked Shots +/- 6 in 14 games i'm playing on my Schools Varsity team and still pushing everyday to try and make college hockey. Trust me when I say my parents aren't rich whatsoever and I had to work my way up as much as possible. Some people even said I worked way too hard but if you want something that bad hard work and dedication get you there.

I play 14u AAA, I'll just tell you what I do. 4-5 off-ice sessions a week (A healthy mix of conditioning and weights), 3-4 (closer to 8 for tourneys and showcases) skates a week, dieting - if I have a weightlifting day I drink protein shakes after my workouts. Don't forget work other than that in the gym, stick handling drills help a lot. If you're looking for someone to train with, try to find someone that specializes in sport training.

You’re gonna do great, you can’t be better than everyone but you can be more dedicated than everyone. Just work on anything you can to build strength; any kind of work out like hiking or running will help. Work on your shot, even if you don’t have a net, just shoot at the garage door. Your dad will yell at you but that’s a small price to pay if you love the game. Good luck. I’m a Bantam this year (I was supposed to be one last year but the cut me to Peewees because I simply wasn’t ready) and I love the sport enough to know I’ll be playing my whole life, even though I’ll never have the time or money for travel. You’re doing great getting on the ice. That’s what you need. The best of luck to you, dude.

I was a mite in house and my parents told me about this travel tryout for the "Ice Jets" so I went not even expecting to make any of the A AA or AAA teams so I did the tryouts and 30 mins later the lists for the 3 teams came out I looked for my number on the A team first not there the AA team not there and then the AAA team and there it was in the middle of the list I was shocked so I signed my contract and had one of my best seasons on that team. I just wanted to share this and also say that you're videos are a big part of my skill set today and I want to thank you so much Coach Jeremy.

I've been playing hockey for awhile now and at the start when I was very young and I always seemed to have some sort of talent so I pursed it hard. For the last almost 8 years of my life, I've been training 3-6 hrs everyday. Wether it be skating, shooting, working out etc it surely has paid off. I'm now 14 playing AAA a year up and I'm not the guy to be cocky but well I'm the best player on the team by far and I have the most goals, assist and points. I was always told I would never be a good hockey player by all my friends and pretty much my whole school because I'm underweight, (5'5 100 pounds and I just can't seem to gain more the 5 lbs a year even with intense workouts.). But I just continue to have the drive for the game and a few months ago after a game my proudest moment of all happened after a chl scout came up to me and we had quite a long chat. As a result to this it has driven me even more and it really shows that hard work pays off.

I'm in my first year of peewee which is probably another big reason why it feels so much harder. My home rink is Crosby's old rink that's like my favourite part about living here :)
