  • In this video I'm taking a look at Papyrus Author, a subscription writing app available on Mac and Windows. This is the most feature-rich app I have ever used and worth every penny of a monthly subscription.

    I would love to see a long version of this video! My only concern regarding Papyrus Author is that if it's as robust as Scrivener (or more so), I may get lost in it. Scrivener is still- even with all your tutorials, too much for me. That's my issue, not Scrivener's or yours, but unfortunately, I always seem to spend too much time trying to figure Scrivener out, rather than writing.

      My thoughts EXACTLY. Wrote my first dark-fantasy novel on Word, bought Scrivener after Mike's review, but two things keep me from trying Papyrus: 1) IMHO, monthly fees make no sense for this type of app. 2) I'm not sure I should put that much effort on learning a tool instead of actually write stuff.
      All the best, cheers from Brazil.

      @@MiloAmbrus You sound like a pantser who doesn't get the basic point of plotting and planning one's novel. So be it. But don't confuse this with such a non-intuitive tool like Scrivener. SMH.

    While it looks good, I think I'll stick with Scrivener. It's got everything I need and I've already paid for it. XD
    Still, thanks for sharing the odds and ends of this nifty program.

    Michael, go for it. I cannot wait for you to do an indepth review. I have received your reviews on so many different writing apps. I have never seen you so enthusiastically impressed. I trust your judgement and cannot wait to hear more. Thanks for all you do!

    I'd like to see the long version! I use Papyrus Author and find is so much MORE than Scrivener, but I'd like to see what you come up with on features. I don't want to miss a thing. Oh yeah, I have the subscription version.

    I have used this software for years right from its earliest beta, and as Michael says, this is by far the best software for authors I have ever used. i highly recommend it to anyone who wants to take their writing seriously.

    It looks cool, but I really hate subscriptions .... Currently editing novel on Scrivener and I use the drafts so I can see in colored text what was my rough draft and what was my 2nd draft. I like the inspector in scrivener to jot notes. That's about all I use at the moment.

    Looks very nice - please do that deep dive. I will confess that I think I will stick with separate tools. Curio or Devonthink alongside a word processor can provide some of what you get with Papyrus, admittedly without the tight integration.
    It's surprising traditional word processors haven't done much to keep up with tools like this and Scrivener. It would seem like an obvious thing.

    I'd love to see a long video on the features. Right now, I'm weighing whether it's better to pay the $15 / month for Papyrus Author or just buy Scrivener and Aeon 3 (for the time lines) and not have to pay for anything again. A deep dive into Papyrus Author and demonstrating the features that other writing software lacks would be helpful as well as giving reasons why paying $15 every month is the most cost effective solution compared to purchasing Scrivener and Aeon 3.

    I was going to suggest that you review PapyrusAuthor because I use the pro version and don’t want them to go out of business--lol--I don’t know how I found them--probably a random search for writing software--because I’ve never heard anyone talk about them.
    There is a bit of a learning curve if you want to take advantage of a lot of the features, so I suggest watching all the CZcams videos.
    It also has similarities to InDesign in that you can make master pages. This is useful if you want to remove the header on chapter opens for the print interior.
    I find the organizer useful. I drag the tab onto a second monitor--a TV screen in my case--and have all the info I need at a glance (chapters, notes, abstract, time, characters, locations, etc.). Not to mention the color-coding; that’s what I liked about Scrivener.
    I also love being able to publish without leaving the program. At this point, their epub/mobi exports aren’t as nice looking as Atticus but they’re good enough for me. And the PDF export to IngramSpark was a support question because IS is so fussy, but simply using File > Print> Adobe PDF solved the problem.
    Also, their support team is great. I’ve used it and got answers quickly.
    Just a side note, I use the PapyrusAuthor extention on Microsoft Edge and it puts info from the web page into the My Research database when I select global.
    There’s supposed to be an update coming but I don’t know when.
    The grammar, spelling, word repetition checker is good. However, for my final edit I do use Word for ProWritingAid, Grammarly, and--based on your recommendation--PerfectIt. But it’s not necessary.
    I would like to see a longer review. Like I said, I want people to know about them so that they stay in business!!

    • @ConnieMyres
      @ConnieMyres Před 2 lety +1

      @@AuthorLevelUp Yeah, there will be! Don’t worry, even their CZcams videos don’t tell everything. I’m not an expert in PapyrusAuthor, but one helpful thing I've done is set myself up a template. Not only because the formatting and back matter are how I want them, but because the databases are shared. This is nice for books in a series.

  • @taylormcc
    @taylormcc Před 2 lety +2

    There's no way this software is worth almost $200 every single year. It's got some cutesy features that do a better job of making writers feel like their doing somehting when they should be actually writing. I wish you'd point that out, or anything negative really. This comes across as more of an endorsement than a review.

  • @Cvst1llo
    @Cvst1llo Před rokem

    Papyrus is very, very, very complicated. It only looks so easy in the video.
    Its also a copy of "Patchwork-Author" which is more powerfull and much cheaper.
    It's only known through marketing (paid critics for example), not through quality.
    I like "Scrivener".

  • @StijnHommes

    Another unnecessary subscription model to squeeze as much money out of writers instead of finding more customers...
