  • The Tesla Model Y Suspension is widely considered too stiff so I came up with a solution and tuned the Unplugged Luxury Coilover suspension to perfection. Here is my journey and some tips you can use to make your Tesla ride better.

    LR Model Y owner since 2020. My first suspension adjustment was 18” Aero wheels with 235/55-18 Pirelli Scorpion Verde tires. Now I’ve added a SF Racing coil over set up front and rear. Lowered the car about an inch. Initially set shocks at zero. Speed bumps were a nightmare, highway was great. This week adjusted shocks to 10 on the 0-32 scale. Love the ride.

    Thanks so much. It explained a lot about why the Y model is so stiff. We almost returned ours. Specially, is so rough for the people sitting in the back. Also, I noticed that it depends on the quality of the roads as well. It is a lot worse with roads with potholes.

    Thank you amd sooo glad you made this vid. I also have a 2020 LR Y with 40k miles. Ordered Unplugged coil overs in June of 2021, delay after delay, finally got them in February of 2022. Got them installed in March and it was all downhill. The product they shipped did not match the photos on their site (they’ve since updated after complaints) and it did not have the lowering capabilities that they claim (also since updated). Long story short, they said you could “slam” the ride height but the most the rear could do was barely over an inch. Their advice to get even lower was to excessively increase the preload to essential squeeze the springs down… which make the ride unbearable. After some back and forth, they admitted their exaggerated claims and agreed to send me a new set of inch shorter springs. While this did allow for a lower drop, it required dramatically increased spring rates, which again… makes the ride overly harsh.
    Advice to others considering coil overs, do your research and go with Mountain Pass Performance.

    Definitely true with respect to the Y going over bumps. Seems like the Y has solid axles. 18 inch wheels from tsportline is on the list. Look forward to seeing the differences between the upp and mpp coil overs.

    Tire pressure helps. Tesla recommends a range from 39-45 with 42 being the middle. I would lower your to 42 from 45 where you are riding and then 39 if that's to stiff. I would play with this before a new suspension.
    Around town 39 for comfort, road trip 42-45 for efficiency.
    Ciao

      Hi there Kyle, I am due to pick up my 2020 true model Y performance tomorrow morning at 10 AM and watching this video made me have second thoughts of possibly canceling or rejecting the car. I’m glad I read your response. So you think the 2022 model Y performance isn’t that bad of a suspension compared to the long range? I had the 2021 long range up until a month ago and even though that suspension was harsh, it didn’t bother me that much. I’m hoping the new 2022 model Y performance will be what you said which isn’t that bad. I’m hoping that Tesla did do some updates on it

    @adamstgermain9308 Před rokem +1

    Probably my biggest complaint about the Y is the front/back rocking you get on a concrete highway, i'm curious what your thoughts are on that with the unplugged performance suspension, or if it's more the short wheelbase of the vehicle that is the issue. I live in Nebraska where we get freeze/thaw cycles that can lead to some pretty rough roads so this may not be an issue in your area.

  • @RT-zg9qi
    @RT-zg9qi Před 2 lety +7

    For those with the MYP you can get 295 tires for rear and move the 275 tires to the front. This is by far the best upgrade you can do to the MYP with the 21" uberturbines. The tires that come stock on the MYP are not the correct size. Switching to this setup gives a better ride, better wheel protection and overall a much better look. The stretched look on stock setup is awful on all levels.

    • @rockwjz
      @rockwjz Před rokem

      Agreed, this made a massive difference over the terribly stretched summer tires. I’ve heard you can go as thick of a sidewall as 275/40 front and 295/40 rear but I was a little nervous and did 265/35 and 295/35 and it still makes a massive difference.

  • @whattheschmidt
    @whattheschmidt Před 2 lety +1

    What would be the actual reason Tesla would have the suspension so firm for the non performance models? Is it more efficient? Is there a bit less room for travel with bounciness since the cars are already lower to the ground than average vehicles (for efficiency)?

  • @ATLRoniB
    @ATLRoniB Před 2 lety

    my 22 MYP is smooth when you're on highways but on backroads and at slower speeds going over bumps etc you can def feel more jolts and shifts but its not too bad. I would love to try a new suspension but spending 4k on that is not in the budget at all

    Thanks for the update on this, Gjeebs. Our Family has a Model Y LR, and a CX-9. It blows my mind how I can get into my YLR and love the experience, but turning over a speed bumb in a parking garage or a bump in the road can send me jostling around or feeling like the car is hitting the road like a rock. I know this sounds dramatic, but a dip in the road on a texas street near flood zones can be harsh. When I get into the CX-9, the difference is immediate. I know... I know that the battery pack is heavy and a whole bunch of other things contribute to the differences. I just wanted to say that you may have me looking into an aftermarket kit for our YLR. Thanks for continuing to update us on your experience with it since the day you installed it.

  • @Grey-Troll
    @Grey-Troll Před rokem

    With a softer tire or smaller rim (more rubber) you will be sacrificing range. It may be just a couple of miles per charge, but it absolutely will make a difference as it does in the MPG of my internal combustion vehicle. If you live miles down a gravel road however... it might be worth the tradeoff.
    I wonder if softer suspension makes any measurable difference either in range over all or regenerative braking efficiency. I suppose the location of the motors and if the vehicle has traditional half shafts (or CV axles) linking the electric motors would come into play, but again, dunno.

The shop did the initial install and dropped the car too low for my taste but it felt really comfortable and took all the sharp edges off the ride. I went back (don't have my own jack and/or faith in myself to do it right) and had them raise it back up to about 1/2" or so below stock heights but now it's fairly firm again.. so it's going to be a journey to get the settings right. time to invest in a jack, I guess. will keep watching to see how the 3 setup works for you.

The language that would void the basic states that any alteration or modification that was made inappropriately, etc. etc. would void the basic warranty. The too stiff suspension tuning isn't just a symptom of the Model Y. The '22 Model S is the same despite air bags and adaptive suspension. I've extensive wheel time behind a both and '20 and '22 MS, and I can't believe Tesla botched it.
    Whereas the the '20's suspension is compliant, well adjusted, smooth and the 3 suspension modes have a luxurious ride through and through, anywhere from comfortable and plush to a taunt but well mannered ride, and NVH is really tamed as well.
    All that all goes tits up in the new Model Ss. The ride quality feels, in short, like an inexpensive entry level luxury sedan. A $100K halo model that feels like it's half as expensive Model 3/Y siblings. If I closed my eyes, I would think I was driving an C Class Benz.
    There is no suppleness or refinement to the suspension that would be in-kind with a premium luxury class ride. Even with the suspension dialed to "Comfort" (and the car raised) it rides unnecessarily firm. Setting it to "Sport" makes the experience almost unbearably harsh on all but glass smooth roads. The chassis is stiff, but vibration and surface imperfection isn't muted enough and carried into the cabin and road roar is louder than the '20.
    They traded a true luxury feeling grand tourer for being a big Model 3. When I'm given the option of using the 2022 or the 2020, I almost always select the older car because of its superior all around ride quality.

    Whenever I get an uber drive in a model y. Even rented a model S on turo for a day. The suspension is the worst of any car I've ever been in... Super crashy everywhere. It's absolutely terrible.

    I think this video should be a drinking game. Every time “stiff” is said you drink. I would not have made it through the first 3 minutes.

    Too stiff? And a long range? My performance is not stiff enough when it matters.
